Saturday of Easter Week, 18 April 2020

+ In the Name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Opening:

Heavenly Father, you have delivered us from the dominion of sin and death, and brought us into the kingdom of your beloved Son: Grant that, as by his death he has called us to life, so by his love he may raise us to eternal joys; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Let us fix our eyes on Jesus Christ,
our hope, our light, and our salvation.

A Reading from the Gospels: Mark 16:9-20 (NLT)

After Jesus rose from the dead early on Sunday morning, the first person who saw him was Mary Magdalene, the woman from whom he had cast out seven demons. She went to the disciples, who were grieving and weeping, and told them what had happened. But when she told them that Jesus was alive and she had seen him, they didn’t believe her.

Afterward he appeared in a different form to two of his followers who were walking from Jerusalem into the country. They rushed back to tell the others, but no one believed them.

Still later he appeared to the eleven disciples as they were eating together. He rebuked them for their stubborn unbelief because they refused to believe those who had seen him after he had been raised from the dead.

And then he told them, “Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone. Anyone who believes and is baptized will be saved. But anyone who refuses to believe will be condemned. These miraculous signs will accompany those who believe: They will cast out demons in my name, and they will speak in new languages.[ They will be able to handle snakes with safety, and if they drink anything poisonous, it won’t hurt them. They will be able to place their hands on the sick, and they will be healed.”

When the Lord Jesus had finished talking with them, he was taken up into heaven and sat down in the place of honor at God’s right hand. And the disciples went everywhere and preached, and the Lord worked through them, confirming what they said by many miraculous signs.

A Reading from the Book of Acts : Acts 4:1-22 (NLT)

Peter and John before the Council

While Peter and John were speaking to the people, they were confronted by the priests, the captain of the Temple guard, and some of the Sadducees. These leaders were very disturbed that Peter and John were teaching the people that through Jesus there is a resurrection of the dead. They arrested them and, since it was already evening, put them in jail until morning. But many of the people who heard their message believed it, so the number of men who believed now totaled about 5,000.

The next day the council of all the rulers and elders and teachers of religious law met in Jerusalem. Annas the high priest was there, along with Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and other relatives of the high priest. They brought in the two disciples and demanded, “By what power, or in whose name, have you done this?”

Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers and elders of our people, are we being questioned today because we’ve done a good deed for a crippled man? Do you want to know how he was healed? Let me clearly state to all of you and to all the people of Israel that he was healed by the powerful name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, the man you crucified but whom God raised from the dead. For Jesus is the one referred to in the Scriptures, where it says,

‘The stone that you builders rejected
has now become the cornerstone.’

There is salvation in no one else! God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be saved.”

The members of the council were amazed when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, for they could see that they were ordinary men with no special training in the Scriptures. They also recognized them as men who had been with Jesus. But since they could see the man who had been healed standing right there among them, there was nothing the council could say. So they ordered Peter and John out of the council chamber and conferred among themselves.

“What should we do with these men?” they asked each other. “We can’t deny that they have performed a miraculous sign, and everybody in Jerusalem knows about it. But to keep them from spreading their propaganda any further, we must warn them not to speak to anyone in Jesus’ name again.” So they called the apostles back in and commanded them never again to speak or teach in the name of Jesus.

But Peter and John replied, “Do you think God wants us to obey you rather than him? We cannot stop telling about everything we have seen and heard.”

The council then threatened them further, but they finally let them go because they didn’t know how to punish them without starting a riot. For everyone was praising God for this miraculous sign—the healing of a man who had been lame for more than forty years.

Morning Reflection:

“Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone.
Anyone who believes and is baptized will be saved.
But anyone who refuses to believe will be condemned.” – Mark 16:15-16

Just prior to his ascension, Jesus commissioned his disciples to go into every part of the world to preach the Good News – “Christ has died! Christ is risen! Christ will come again. Believe and be baptized and you will be saved.” It all seems pretty straightforward, until you begin to read various commentaries and reflect on the signs that Jesus says will accompany those who believe.

Our different understandings are important, since in many cases they have become the walls that separate believers from one another – contrary to Jesus’ command to love one another as a sign of our belonging to Him. We can disagree without becoming disagreeable; and we can love one another despite our differences.

Questions for consideration:

  • How do believing and baptism relate to each other? Are both required for salvation? Is belief alone, or baptism alone enough? How does your tradition work this out? What do you believe? Please explain.
  • How does believing relate to accompanying signs and wonders? The disciples certainly performed miracles, as did others in Jesus’ name. How about now? Does God use signs and wonders to validate the Gospel today? What do you believe?
  • And what of speaking in tongues, handling snakes, and drinking poison? How does your tradition explain these phenomena? Are they in effect today? Why? Why not? Please explain.
  • In your relationships with believers from different traditions, which do you believe is more important – being right, or being kind and loving? Please explain.

Morning Prayer:

The Persecuted Church: Prayer for those who are doing the persecuting:

Merciful God: Open the eyes and soften the hearts of the people who have brought unfathomable suffering and abuse upon Christians around the world. Remind us again that you sent your Son to save the whole world, and that you don’t want anyone – even these people – to perish.  I ask this in Jesus’ name, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen.

My Prayer:

For Evangelists: Almighty and everlasting God – Raise up in this and every land evangelists and heralds of your kingdom, that your Church may proclaim the unsearchable riches of our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

For the Unity of All Believers: O God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, our only Savior, the Prince of Peace: Give us grace to take to heart the grave dangers we are in through our many divisions. Deliver your Church from all enmity and prejudice, and everything that hinders us from godly union. As there is one Body and one Spirit, one hope of our calling, one Lord, one Faith, one Baptism, one God and Father of us all, so make us all to be of one heart and of one mind, united in one holy bond of truth and peace, of faith and love, that with one voice we may give you praise; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God in everlasting glory. Amen.

For Those who Labor in Unity: Almighty God, we give you thanks for all who labor that the Church of Jesus Christ might be one: Grant that we, instructed by their example, and knit together in unity by your Spirit, may ever stand firm upon the one foundation, which is Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

“SEEKING AND SAVING” – Greg&Lizzy – #VIGIL

You’re coming through the darkness
You’re breaking through our blindness
You’re striding through the Red Sea of death
By taking on our likeness
And dying for the lifeless
You’re raising all you children from the dead
You’re raising up my heart from the dead

You’re smashing through the prison door
O God now your have made me sure
Of how your love is breaking every chain
You’re seeking out the hopeless
You’re saving all the poor
For all you’ve done there’s only one song I can sing
You’re raising up my heart from the dead

Hallelujah Hallelujah
You’re seeking and saving my heart
Hallelujah Hallelujah
You’re seeking and saving my heart

From the darkness and the ashes
We are rising we are rising
With the hosts of all the Heavens
We are rising we are rising

Closing:

May the peace of the Lord Christ go with you, wherever He may send you. May He guide you through the wilderness, and protect you through the storm. May He bring you home rejoicing at the wonders He has shown you. May He bring you home rejoicing once again into our doors.

Reflection & Prayer:

Peanut Gallery: There was a power outage at our house today – nothing serious, only for a couple of hours.

The lights were out, no stove or refrigerator, no music or news, and the garage door wouldn’t open. Our cell phones worked as long as the batteries held out, but we couldn’t recharge them.

I’m over-stating the case. We live in a South Carolina hurricane zone and do know how to cope with power outages.

Still, it got me thinking about today’s reading and the church. Is today’s church trying to function in the middle of a serious spiritual power outage? Have God’s people become powerless? Is a power outage the new normal for the church?

God of power and might: send us your Spirit. Fill your church and your people with your power.

+ Bind us to our Lord Jesus Christ, as the branches draw life from the vine.
+ Send us into the world to preach, teach and heal with the power of your Spirit.
+ Prepare the lost, the sick, the demonized, and the broken-hearted to believe and be baptized.
+ Work through us, Lord, confirming what we do and say by miraculous signs.

God of power and might: we must decrease so that you may increase – for apart from you, we can do nothing. We pray, come Holy Spirit, through our Lord Jesus Christ and for your glory. Amen.

Our God and Father, your Son Jesus lived among us, flesh of our flesh, blood of our blood. He died for our sake and you raised him back to life. __________

Reflection & Prayer:

Lord God: the message of Easter is joyously loud and clear –

“Christ the Lord is risen from the dead!”
“I’ve seen him!”

And yet, this life-changing Good News was met by skepticism and disbelief, even by those who were closest to him. And so it is today, we are not prepared to receive this message until we have personally experienced his love and his presence.

Lord Jesus: you call me to be a personal witness of the Good News of Easter.

+ Transform my life by your saving power, that I may credibly say: “I have seen the Lord!”
+ Fill me with your peace and joy, that I may rejoice in your victory over sin and death.
+ Strengthen my faith that I may persevere as your witness in the face obstinacy and disbelief.

Holy Spirit: help me to live as a child of the light, among my friends and neighbors.

+ Show me how to serve the poor and powerless, and the lost and lonely.
+ Show me how to heal those who feel unworthy, those who feel empty.
+ Show me how to love those who feel content, and self-satisfied.

Lord God: make me a credible witness of your saving power. Through my Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Soli Deo gloria!
