Thursday of The 7th Week of Easter, 28 May 2020 – John 17:20-26, Acts 22:30; 23:6-11, Psalm 16, John 17:21 ~ the witness of oneness

Thursday of The 7th Week of Easter, 28 May 2020

+ In the Name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Opening:

Lord God, let your Spirit come upon us in power and fill us with his gifts, to render our minds pleasing to you and make us docile to your will. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

“I pray that they will all be one in us so that the world will believe you sent me.”

A Reading from the Gospels: John 17:20-26 (NLT)

“I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message. I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me.

“I have given them the glory you gave me, so they may be one as we are one. I am in them and you are in me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me. Father, I want these whom you have given me to be with me where I am. Then they can see all the glory you gave me because you loved me even before the world began!

“O righteous Father, the world doesn’t know you, but I do; and these disciples know you sent me. I have revealed you to them, and I will continue to do so. Then your love for me will be in them, and I will be in them.”

Paul before the High Council

The next day the commander ordered the leading priests into session with the Jewish high council He wanted to find out what the trouble was all about, so he released Paul to have him stand before them.
_____

Paul realized that some members of the high council were Sadducees and some were Pharisees, so he shouted, “Brothers, I am a Pharisee, as were my ancestors! And I am on trial because my hope is in the resurrection of the dead!”

This divided the council—the Pharisees against the Sadducees— for the Sadducees say there is no resurrection or angels or spirits, but the Pharisees believe in all of these. So there was a great uproar. Some of the teachers of religious law who were Pharisees jumped up and began to argue forcefully. “We see nothing wrong with him,” they shouted. “Perhaps a spirit or an angel spoke to him.” As the conflict grew more violent, the commander was afraid they would tear Paul apart. So he ordered his soldiers to go and rescue him by force and take him back to the fortress.

That night the Lord appeared to Paul and said, “Be encouraged, Paul. Just as you have been a witness to me here in Jerusalem, you must preach the Good News in Rome as well.”

A Reading from the Old Testament: 1 Samuel 12:19-24 (NLT)

“Pray to the Lord your God for us, or we will die!” they all said to Samuel. “For now we have added to our sins by asking for a king.”

“Don’t be afraid,” Samuel reassured them. “You have certainly done wrong, but make sure now that you worship the Lord with all your heart, and don’t turn your back on him. Don’t go back to worshiping worthless idols that cannot help or rescue you—they are totally useless! The Lord will not abandon his people, because that would dishonor his great name. For it has pleased the Lord to make you his very own people.

“As for me, I will certainly not sin against the Lord by ending my prayers for you. And I will continue to teach you what is good and right. But be sure to fear the Lord and faithfully serve him. Think of all the wonderful things he has done for you.”

Intercession:

O God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, our only Savior, the Prince of Peace:

  • Give us grace to take to heart the grave dangers we are in through our many divisions.
  • Deliver your Church from all enmity and prejudice, and everything that hinders us from godly union.
  • As there is one Body and one Spirit, one hope of our calling, one Lord, one Faith, one Baptism, one God and Father of us all,
  • So make us all to be of one heart and of one mind, united in one holy bond of truth and peace, of faith and love;
  • That with one voice we may give you praise; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

O Lord our Governor, whose glory fills all the world:

  • We commend this Nation to your merciful care, that we may be guided by your providence, and dwell secure in your peace.
  • Grant to our President, Donald J. Trump, wisdom and strength to know and to do your will.
  • Fill him with the love of truth and righteousness,
  • And make him continually mindful of his calling to serve this people in reverent obedience to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Almighty God, who hast given us this good land for our heritage:

  • We humbly pray that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of your favor and glad to do your will.
  • Bless our land with honorable industry, sound learning, and pure conduct.
  • Save us from violence, discord, and confusion; from pride and arrogance, and from every evil way.
  • Defend our liberties, and fashion into one united people the multitudes brought here out of many tribes and nations.
  • Grant the spirit of wisdom to those we entrust the authority of government,
  • That there may be justice and peace at home, and that, through obedience to your Word, we may show forth your praise among the nations of the earth.
  • In the time of prosperity, fill our hearts with thankfulness, and in the day of trouble, strengthen our faith and trust in you; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

O God, you made us in your own image, and you have redeemed us through your Son Jesus Christ:

  • Look with compassion on the whole human family;
  • Take away the arrogance and hatred which infect our hearts;
  • Break down the walls that separate us;
  • Unite us in bonds of love;
  • And work through our struggle and confusion to accomplish your purposes on earth;
  • That, in your good time, all nations and races may serve you in harmony around your heavenly throne; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God now and forever. Amen.

Thursday of 7th Week of Easter, 01 June – John 17:20-26 ~ one in Christ

Thursday of the Seventh Week of Easter

+ In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen!

Opening Prayer

Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, and Father of all who believe in his name: we know that you loved Jesus with a deep and trusting, everlasting love. Let your Holy Spirit pour out this love into the hearts of all believers in Jesus, our Savior. And let this love unite us in one common bond of understanding and mutual respect that we may live for one another and serve one another for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Reading: John 17:20-26 (NLT)

Reflection & Prayer:

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved other believers as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us. Make us one in you; let your love flow in us, and through us to one another that the world may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God.

Show us how to worship and pray together, to live and work together, to support one another in our common effort to make disciples throughout the world. Help us to remain in your love in spite of our rivalries, tensions and conflicts.

Lord God: We confess that “there is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all, in all, and living through all.” Make us one body, united by the same Spirit, and called to the same glorious hope for the future. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
