Psalm 49

Don’t Depend on Wealth

1 Hear this, all you peoples; *
ponder it with your ears, all who dwell in the world,
2 High and low, rich and poor, *
everyone with his neighbor.
3 My mouth shall speak of wisdom, *
and my heart shall muse on understanding.
4 I will incline my ear to a parable, *
and declare my dark sayings with the harp.

5 Why should I fear in the days of wickedness, *
and when the wicked at my heels encompass me round about?
6 There are some who put their trust in their goods, *
and boast in the multitude of their riches.
7 But no one can deliver his brother, *
nor pay unto God a price for him;
8 For it is so costly to redeem their souls, *
that we should never have enough to pay it,
9 So that they should live for ever, *
and should not see the grave.

10 For we see that wise men die, as well as the ignorant and foolish; *
they perish alike and leave their riches for others.
11 And yet they think that their houses shall continue for ever, and that their dwelling places shall endure
from one generation to another, *
and they call lands after their own names.
12 Man is like an ox that has no understanding; *
he is like the beasts that perish.

13 This is the way of their foolishness, *
yet their posterity praise their sayings.
14 Like sheep they are appointed to die, and death shall be their shepherd; *
they shall go down straight into the sepulcher.
15 Their beauty shall consume away in the grave, *
which shall be their dwelling place for ever.
16 But God shall save me from the power of death, *
for he shall deliver my soul.

17 Be not envious if one is made rich, *
or if the glory of his house is increased,
18 For he shall carry nothing away with him when he dies, *
neither shall his glory follow him.
19 For while he lived, he counted himself happy, *
and so long as he did well for himself, people spoke well of him.
20 He shall follow the generation of his fathers *
and shall never see the light.
21 Those who are honored but have no understanding *
are like the beasts that perish.

7 There are two things, Lord,
I want you to do for me
before I die:
8 Make me absolutely honest
and don’t let me be too poor

Give me just what I need.
9 If I have too much to eat,

No redemption could man find in riches, but God has found it in the blood of his dear Son. Our Elder Brother has given to God a ransom, and we are the redeemed of the Lord: because of this redemption by price we shall assuredly be redeemed by power out of the hand of the last enemy.

God’s Mighty Act in Jesus

Long ago in many ways and at many times God’s prophets spoke his message to our ancestors. But now at last, God sent his Son to bring his message to us. God created the universe by his Son, and everything will someday belong to the Son. God’s Son has all the brightness of God’s own glory and is like him in every way. By his own mighty word, he holds the universe together. After the Son had washed away our sins, he sat down at the right side of the glorious God in heaven.   (Hebrews 1:1-3)

Profession of Faith: (The Nicene Creed)

We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, visible and invisible.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only-begotten Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary,
and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father [and the Son],
who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen

Sit down and wait in patience, ye believers! Acknowledge that Jehovah is God, ye who feel the terrors of his wrath! Adore him, and him only, ye who partake in the protection of his grace. Since none can worthily proclaim his nature, let “expressive silence muse his praise.”

All Souls Belong To God

The word of the Lord came to me: “What do you mean by repeating this proverb concerning the land of Israel, ‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge’? As I live, declares the Lord God, this proverb shall no more be used by you in Israel. Behold, all souls are mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is mine: the soul who sins shall die.

_____

“Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Hear now, O house of Israel: Is my way not just? Is it not your ways that are not just? When a righteous person turns away from his righteousness and does injustice, he shall die for it; for the injustice that he has done he shall die. Again, when a wicked person turns away from the wickedness he has committed and does what is just and right, he shall save his life. Because he considered and turned away from all the transgressions that he had committed, he shall surely live; he shall not die. Yet the house of Israel says, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ O house of Israel, are my ways not just? Is it not your ways that are not just?

“Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, declares the Lord God. Repent and turn from all your transgressions, lest iniquity be your ruin. Cast away from you all the transgressions that you have committed, and make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit! Why will you die, O house of Israel? For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Lord God; so turn, and live.”

And he went to the other son and said the same. And he answered, ‘I go, sir,’ but did not go. Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes go into the kingdom of God before you. __________

Consider:

O send out your light and your truth, that they may lead me…
(Psalm 43:3)

“Deliver me from the deceitful and the wicked.”

+ There are ungodly people who, being destitute of religious principle, will not scruple to injure us, when they can thereby gratify their passions or advance their worldly interests.

+ There are deceitful people who will put on the garb of friendship, and acquire our confidence and esteem, and then treacherously cheat us out of our property, or our reputation, or our peace.

+ There are unjust people, who by fraud or by violence, would rob us of our dearest rights and most valuable possessions, and not only reduce our powers and opportunities of doing good, but even diminish our means of comfortable subsistence.

+ And there are oppressors, who taking advantage of our weakness or dependence, and trampling alike on the maxims of equity and humanity, may exact from us unreasonable services, impose upon us heavy burdens and cruel restraints, and ply us with insults, and harassments, and deprivations, from which we can make no escape, and for which we can find no redress.

—Andrew Thomson, D.D. (1826).

Q: Can you put contemporary names and faces on the people described in the above quote?

Q: How are they affecting your peace of mind?

“Send out your light and your truth, that they may lead me.”

Apart from the “Light and Truth” of God we are helplessly and hopelessly lost. The Psalmist prayed for that which God has given us in Christ Jesus.

Jesus said: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)

Q: What has Jesus said or taught that reminds you that he is with you and for you?

Q: What can you do to remind yourself of God’s love, and enter into His presence?

Prayer:

+ For Our nation

Almighty God, who has given us this good land for our heritage: We humbly pray that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of your favor and glad to do your will. Bless our land with honorable industry, sound learning, and pure conduct. Save us from violence, discord, and confusion; from pride and arrogance, and from every evil way. Defend our liberties, and fashion into one united people the multitudes brought here from out of many kindreds and tongues. Endue with the spirit of wisdom those to whom, in your Name, we entrust the authority of government, that there may be justice and peace at home, and that, through obedience to your law, we may show forth your praise among the nations of the earth. In the time of prosperity, fill our hearts with thankfulness, and in the day of trouble, sustain our trust in you; all of which we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord.

+ For Mercy

Almighty God, you have not dealt with us according to our sins, nor rewarded us according to our iniquities; grant that we, who for our evil deeds deserve to be punished, by the might of your grace may mercifully be relieved; through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

+ For Guidence

O God, by whom the meek are guided in judgment, and light rises up in darkness for the godly: Grant us, in all our doubts and uncertainties, the grace to ask what you would have us do, that the Spirit of wisdom may save us from all false choices; that in your light we may see light, and in your straight path we may not stumble; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
