+ In the Name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Opening:

Almighty and everlasting God, you govern all things both in heaven and on earth: Mercifully hear the prayers of your people, and in our time grant us your peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

“O be joyful in the LORD, all you lands;
serve the LORD with gladness, and come before his presence with a song.”

Preparation:

 Holy Spirit, breath of God and fire of love, I cannot pray without your aid: Kindle in me the fire of your love, and illumine me with your light; that with a steadfast will and holy thoughts I may approach the Father in spirit and in truth; through Jesus Christ my Lord, who reigns with you and the Father in eternal union. Our happy God should be worshipped by a happy people; a cheerful spirit is in keeping with his nature, his acts, and the gratitude which we should cherish for his mercies. In every land the LORD’s goodness is seen, therefore in every land should he be praised.

He is our Lord, and therefore he is to be served; he is our gracious Lord, and therefore to be served with joy…. Singing, as it is a joyful, and at the same time a devout, exercise, should be a constant form of approach to God.

+ Accept, O Lord, my thanks and praise for all that you have done for me. I thank you for the splendor of the whole creation, for the beauty of this world, for the wonder of life, and for the mystery of love. I thank you for the blessing of my family and friends, and for the loving care which surrounds me on every side. I thank you for setting me at tasks that demand my  best effort, and for leading me to accomplishments that satisfy and delight me. I thank you also for those disappointments and failures that lead me to acknowledge my dependence on you alone. Surely we, to whom by grace he so lovingly gives himself, should exalt him with all our hearts… When he reveals himself in Christ Jesus, as our reconciled God, who allows us to approach even to his throne, it becomes us to unite earnestness and humility, joy and adoration, and, while we exalt him, prostrate ourselves in the dust before him.

Holiness is the harmony of all the virtues…. In this all comprehensive moral excellence he would have his creatures take delight, and when they do so their delight is evidence that their hearts have been renewed, and they themselves have been made partakers of his holiness.

The work of our redemption and salvation by Christ is a work of wonder – a “marvelous thing”.

  • from its conception before all time… God knew you
  • to its completion in your lifetime… God loved you
  • and its consequences for eternity… God is with you

Christ himself has won the victory over sin and death – in you.

(Psalm 97:10)

Love and hate spring up from out of our hearts. A redeemed heart is conformed to the heart of Christ.

  • The LORD hates evil – his fire consumes it, his lightnings blast it, his presence shakes it out of its place, and his glory confounds all the lovers of it.
  • We cannot love God without hating that which he hates.
  • We cannot be like God unless we love what he loves, and hate what he hates.

Consider:

Tell it out among the nations, “The LORD is King;
it is he who has made the world so firm that it cannot be moved;
he shall judge the peoples righteously.”
(Psalm 96:10)

This is the best news that can be given to the nations. Society is safe where God is king, no revolutions shall convulse his empire, no invasions shall disturb his kingdom.

A settled government is essential to national prosperity, the reign of the god of truth and righteousness will promote this to the highest degree. Sin has shaken the world, the reign of Jesus will set it fast again upon sure foundations.
