Reflection & Prayer

Philippians 3:10-11 (NLT)I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised him from the dead. I want to suffer with him, sharing in his death, so that one way or another I will experience the resurrection from the dead!

Lord Jesus: All who put their faith and trust in you want to know you more, at least in theory. But in practice, it gets a lot harder – sharing in your suffering and death. We want to get through Good Friday as quickly as possible, so that we can live forever as Easter people; but that’s not quite the way it works, as you tell us in today’s reading.

Expect Opposition

Luke 21:12 (NLT)“There will be a time of great persecution. You will be dragged into synagogues and prisons, and you will stand trial before kings and governors because you are my followers….”

Lord Jesus: You warned believers to expect opposition as we live out our faith – putting into practice what you preached; and so it has played out for 2000 years in every generation and every tribe and nation. For some it has meant prejudice, mockery and ridicule, but for others it has meant imprisonment, torture and death.

+ Lord, in your mercy, give us the courage of our convictions to face opposition in whatever form it takes
+ Lord, in your mercy, give us wisdom and the right words to speak the undeniable truth of your Word
+ Lord, in your mercy, give us perseverance to stand firm until our life’s end, even when family and friends turn against us
+ Lord, in your mercy, give us the strength to stay alert to danger and to be prepared for your imminent return

New Covenant

Luke 22:19-20 (NLT)He took some bread and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

After supper he took another cup of wine and said, “This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood, which is poured out as a sacrifice for you.”

Lord Jesus: Thank you for instituting the sacrament of holy communion as a sign and seal of your covenant with us.

+ Thank you for your presence with us in this most holy sacrament
+ Help us to enter into this holy mystery with reverence and awe
+ Thank you for permitting your body to be broken that our bodies may be made whole
+ Thank you for pouring out your innocent blood, once and for all, for the forgiveness of our sins
+ Thank you for your assuring us in this holy mystery that we are heirs of your eternal kingdom

Watch and pray

Luke 22:45-46 (NLT)At last he stood up again and returned to the disciples, only to find them asleep, exhausted from grief. “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation.”

Lord Jesus: You alone understood the enormity of the sacrifice you were about to make. We cannot begin to understand your agony of spirit.

+ Forgive us our ignorance and sustain us in our prayer life
+ Lead us not into temptation and deliver us from evil
+ Fill us with your Spirit and lead us on the path of right living, and
+ Stay with us and watch over us, even when we fall asleep on you

I ask this for your name’s sake. Amen.

E100:14.a – The Cross of Christ

The Last Supper – Luke 22:1-46 (ESV)

The Plot to Kill Jesus

Luke 22  Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread drew near, which is called the Passover. 2 And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to put him to death, for they feared the people.

Judas to Betray Jesus

3 Then Satan entered into Judas called Iscariot, who was of the number of the twelve. 4 He went away and conferred with the chief priests and officers how he might betray him to them. 5 And they were glad, and agreed to give him money. 6 So he consented and sought an opportunity to betray him to them in the absence of a crowd.

The Passover with the Disciples

7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. 8 So Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat it.” 9 They said to him, “Where will you have us prepare it?” 10 He said to them, “Behold, when you have entered the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him into the house that he enters 11 and tell the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 12 And he will show you a large upper room furnished; prepare it there.” 13 And they went and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.

14 And when the hour came, he reclined at table, and the apostles with him. 15 And he said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16 For I tell you I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” 17 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he said, “Take this, and divide it among yourselves. 18 For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” 19 And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 20 And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood. 21 But behold, the hand of him who betrays me is with me on the table. 22 For the Son of Man goes as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed!” 23 And they began to question one another, which of them it could be who was going to do this.

Who Is the Greatest?

24 A dispute also arose among them, as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest. 25 And he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors. 26 But not so with you. Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. 27 For who is the greater, one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But I am among you as the one who serves.

28 “You are those who have stayed with me in my trials, 29 and I assign to you, as my Father assigned to me, a kingdom, 30 that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

Jesus Foretells Peter’s Denial

31 “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, 32 but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.” 33 Peter said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death.” 34 Jesus said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day, until you deny three times that you know me.”

Scripture Must Be Fulfilled in Jesus

35 And he said to them, “When I sent you out with no moneybag or knapsack or sandals, did you lack anything?” They said, “Nothing.” 36 He said to them, “But now let the one who has a moneybag take it, and likewise a knapsack. And let the one who has no sword sell his cloak and buy one. 37 For I tell you that this Scripture must be fulfilled in me: ‘And he was numbered with the transgressors.’ For what is written about me has its fulfillment.” 38 And they said, “Look, Lord, here are two swords.” And he said to them, “It is enough.”

39 And he came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. 40 And when he came to the place, he said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.” 41 And he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” 43 And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him. 44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. 45 And when he rose from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping for sorrow, 46 and he said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation.”

“Rise, My Soul to Watch and Pray” – Lori Sealy

“Rise, My Soul, to Watch and Pray” by Johann B. Freystein, 1671-1718

Rise, my soul, to watch and pray, From thy sleep awaken; Be not by the evil day, Unawares o’ertaken. For the Foe, Well we know, Oft his harvest reapeth, While the Christian sleepeth.

Watch against the devil’s snares, Lest asleep he find thee; For indeed no pains he spares, To deceive and blind thee. Satan’s prey, Oft are they, Who secure are sleeping, And no watch are keeping.

Watch and pray. Sin is crouching at the door. Watch and pray, then pray some more.

Rise, My Soul to watch and pray, from thy sleep awaken; be not by the evil day, unawares o’ertaken, for the foe, well we know, oft his harvest reapeth, while the Christian sleepeth.

Watch and pray. Sin is crouching at the door. Watch and pray, then pray some more.

Watch and pray. Sin is crouching at the door. Watch and pray, then pray some more.

Watch! Let not the wicked world, with its power defeat thee. Watch lest with her pomp unfurled, she betray and cheat thee. Watch and see lest there be, faithless friends to charm thee, who but seek to harm thee.

Watch and pray, sin is crouching at the door. Watch and pray, then pray some more. ‘Cause Satan longs to sift you, a sinful heart afflicts you, but Christ is interceding evermore!

Watch against thyself my soul, lest with grace you trifle; let not self thy thoughts control, nor God’s mercy stifle. Pride and sin lurk within, all thy hopes to shatter, heed not when they flatter.

Watch and pray! Watch and pray!

Rise, my soul to watch and pray, to the Lord unceasing. He will free thee, be thy stay, strength and faith increasing. O Lord, bless in distress, and let nothing swerve me, from the will to serve thee.

Watch and pray!

Reflection: “In The Present Moment” – Anne Morrow Lindbergh

Hurry is an unpleasant thing in itself, but also very unpleasant for whoever is around it. Some people came into my room and rushed in and rushed out and even when they were there they were not there – they were in the moment ahead or the moment behind. Some people who came in just for a moment were all there, completely in that moment.

Live from day-to-day, just from day-to-day. If you do so, you worry less and live more richly. If you let yourself be absorbed completely, if you surrender completely to the moments as they pass, you live more richly in those moments.

I do not think, it is lack of time that keeps me from doing things, it is that I do not want enough to do them.

Holy Michael, archangel, defend us in the day of battle; be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray: and do thou, prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God thrust down to Hell Satan and all wicked spirits who wander through the world for the ruin of souls. Mother and child

Psalm 131:1-2 ESV:

O Lord, my heart is not lifted up; my eyes are not raised too high; I do not occupy myself with things too great and too marvelous for me. But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me.

1 Kings 19:19-21 ESV:

So he departed from there and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen in front of him, and he was with the twelfth. Elijah passed by him and cast his cloak upon him. And he left the oxen and ran after Elijah and said, “Let me kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you.” And he said to him, “Go back again, for what have I done to you?” And he returned from following him and took the yoke of oxen and sacrificed them and boiled their flesh with the yokes of the oxen and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he arose and went after Elijah and assisted him.

Mark 14:32-40 ESV:

And they went to a place called Gethsemane. And he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” And he took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be greatly distressed and troubled. And he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and watch.”

And going a little farther, he fell on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. And he said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Remove this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”

And he came and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour? Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

And again he went away and prayed, saying the same words. And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy, and they did not know what to answer him.

Reflection:

Help me to know that the secret of contentment lies in organizing the self in the direction of simplicity.

Unless You have another task for me, keep me vigilant in prayer.
