Morning Reading & Prayer

+ In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen!

Opening – (Northumbria Community)

One thing I have asked of the Lord, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life; to behold the beauty of the Lord and to seek Him in His temple.

Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ, King of endless glory.

Reflection & Prayer

Amos 1:1-2 (NLT) – This message was given to Amos, a shepherd from the town of Tekoa in Judah. He received this message in visions two years before the earthquake, when Uzziah was king of Judah and Jeroboam II, the son of Jehoash, was king of Israel.

This is what he saw and heard:

“The Lord’s voice will roar from Zion and thunder from Jerusalem! The lush pastures of the shepherds will dry up; the grass on Mount Carmel will wither and die.”

God’s Judgment on Israel’s Neighbors

Amos 1:3 (NLT) – This is what the Lord says:

“The people of Damascus have sinned again and again,  and I will not let them go unpunished! They beat down my people in Gilead as grain is threshed with iron sledges….

Amos 1:6 (NLT) – This is what the Lord says:

“The people of Gaza have sinned again and again, and I will not let them go unpunished! They sent whole villages into exile, selling them as slaves to Edom….

Amos 1:9 (NLT) – This is what the Lord says:

“The people of Tyre have sinned again and again, and I will not let them go unpunished! They broke their treaty of brotherhood with Israel, selling whole villages as slaves to Edom….

Amos 1:11 (NLT) – This is what the Lord says:

“The people of Edom have sinned again and again, and I will not let them go unpunished! They chased down their relatives, the Israelites, with swords, showing them no mercy. In their rage, they slashed them continually and were unrelenting in their anger….

Amos 1:13 (NLT) – This is what the Lord says:

“The people of Ammon have sinned again and again, and I will not let them go unpunished! When they attacked Gilead to extend their borders, they ripped open pregnant women with their swords….

Amos 2:1 (NLT) – This is what the Lord says:

“The people of Moab have sinned again and again, and I will not let them go unpunished! They desecrated the bones of Edom’s king, burning them to ashes….

God’s Judgment on Judah and Israel

Amos 2:4-5 (NLT) – This is what the Lord says:

“The people of Judah have sinned again and again, and I will not let them go unpunished! They have rejected the instruction of the Lord, refusing to obey his decrees. They have been led astray by the same lies that deceived their ancestors.  So I will send down fire on Judah, and all the fortresses of Jerusalem will be destroyed.”

Amos 2:6-7 (NLT) – This is what the Lord says:

“The people of Israel have sinned again and again, and I will not let them go unpunished! They sell honorable people for silver and poor people for a pair of sandals. They trample helpless people in the dust and shove the oppressed out of the way. Both father and son sleep with the same woman, corrupting my holy name….

Amos 3:1-2 (NLT) – Listen to this message that the Lord has spoken against you, O people of Israel—against the entire family I rescued from Egypt:

“From among all the families on the earth, I have been intimate with you alone. That is why I must punish you for all your sins.”

Witnesses against Guilty Israel

Amos 3:7-8 (NLT) – Indeed, the Sovereign Lord never does anything until he reveals his plans to his servants the prophets. The lion has roared—so who isn’t frightened? The Sovereign Lord has spoken—so who can refuse to proclaim his message?

Amos 3:12-15 (NLT) – This is what the Lord says:

“A shepherd who tries to rescue a sheep from a lion’s mouth will recover only two legs or a piece of an ear. So it will be for the Israelites in Samaria lying on luxurious beds, and for the people of Damascus reclining on couches.

“Now listen to this, and announce it throughout all Israel,” says the Lord, the Lord God of Heaven’s Armies.

“On the very day I punish Israel for its sins, I will destroy the pagan altars at Bethel. The horns of the altar will be cut off and fall to the ground. And I will destroy the beautiful homes of the wealthy—their winter mansions and their summer houses, too—all their palaces filled with ivory,” says the Lord.

Israel’s Failure to Learn

Amos 4:1-3 (NLT) – Listen to me, you fat cows living in Samaria, you women who oppress the poor and crush the needy, and who are always calling to your husbands, “Bring us another drink!”

The Sovereign Lord has sworn this by his holiness: “The time will come when you will be led away with hooks in your noses. Every last one of you will be dragged away like a fish on a hook! You will be led out through the ruins of the wall; you will be thrown from your fortresses,” says the Lord….

Amos 4:6-10 (NLT) – “I brought hunger to every city and famine to every town. But still you would not return to me,” says the Lord.

“I kept the rain from falling when your crops needed it the most. I sent rain on one town but withheld it from another. Rain fell on one field, while another field withered away. People staggered from town to town looking for water, but there was never enough. But still you would not return to me,” says the Lord.

“I struck your farms and vineyards with blight and mildew. Locusts devoured all your fig and olive trees. But still you would not return to me,” says the Lord.

“I sent plagues on you like the plagues I sent on Egypt long ago. I killed your young men in war and led all your horses away. The stench of death filled the air! But still you would not return to me,” says the Lord.

Amos 4:12-13 (NLT) –  “Therefore, I will bring upon you all the disasters I have announced. Prepare to meet your God in judgment, you people of Israel!”

For the Lord is the one who shaped the mountains, stirs up the winds, and reveals his thoughts to mankind. He turns the light of dawn into darkness and treads on the heights of the earth. The Lord God of Heaven’s Armies is his name!

Opening sentences:

Jesus proclaimed the Gospel of the Kingdom and cured every disease among the people. Show us, Lord, the light of Your mercy.

A Reading from Letters: 1 John 3:22–4:6 (NLT)

And we will receive from him whatever we ask because we obey him and do the things that please him.

And this is his commandment: We must believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as he commanded us. Those who obey God’s commandments remain in fellowship with him, and he with them. And we know he lives in us because the Spirit he gave us lives in us.

1 John 4.4

Dear friends, do not believe everyone who claims to speak by the Spirit. You must test them to see if the spirit they have comes from God. For there are many false prophets in the world. This is how we know if they have the Spirit of God: If a person claiming to be a prophet acknowledges that Jesus Christ came in a real body, that person has the Spirit of God. But if someone claims to be a prophet and does not acknowledge the truth about Jesus, that person is not from God. Such a person has the spirit of the Antichrist, which you heard is coming into the world and indeed is already here.

But you belong to God, my dear children. You have already won a victory over those people, because the Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world. Those people belong to this world, so they speak from the world’s viewpoint, and the world listens to them. But we belong to God, and those who know God listen to us. If they do not belong to God, they do not listen to us. That is how we know if someone has the Spirit of truth or the spirit of deception.

A Reading from the Gospels: Matthew 4:12-17, 23-25 (NLT)

When Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he left Judea and returned to Galilee. He went first to Nazareth, then left there and moved to Capernaum, beside the Sea of Galilee, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali. This fulfilled what God said through the prophet Isaiah:

“In the land of Zebulun and of Naphtali, beside the sea, beyond the Jordan River, in Galilee where so many Gentiles live, the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light. And for those who lived in the land where death casts its shadow, a light has shined.”

From then on Jesus began to preach, “Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near.”

Jesus traveled throughout the region of Galilee, teaching in the synagogues and announcing the Good News about the Kingdom. And he healed every kind of disease and illness. News about him spread as far as Syria, and people soon began bringing to him all who were sick. And whatever their sickness or disease, or if they were demon possessed or epileptic or paralyzed — he healed them all. Large crowds followed him wherever he went — people from Galilee, the Ten Towns, Jerusalem, from all over Judea, and from east of the Jordan River.

Morning Prayer: 24 Sept – Revelation 8:6-12 ~ judgements upon a recalcitrant world

Opening sentences

Lord, open my lips and my mouth will proclaim your praise.

I arise today, through God’s strength to pilot me:
God’s might to uphold me, God’s wisdom to guide me,
God’s eye to look before me, God’s ear to hear me,
God’s word to speak for me, God’s hand to guard me,
God’s way to lie before me, God’s shield to protect me,
God’s host to secure me: against snares of devils,
against temptations of vices, against inclinations of nature,
against everyone who shall wish me ill,
afar and anear, alone and in a crowd.

Revelation 8:6-12 (ESV) – to be read aloud

Now the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared to blow them.

The first angel blew his trumpet, and there followed hail and fire, mixed with blood, and these were thrown upon the earth. And a third of the earth was burned up, and a third of the trees were burned up, and all green grass was burned up.

The second angel blew his trumpet, and something like a great mountain, burning with fire, was thrown into the sea, and a third of the sea became blood. A third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.

The third angel blew his trumpet, and a great star fell from heaven, blazing like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water. The name of the star is Wormwood. A third of the waters became wormwood, and many people died from the water, because it had been made bitter.

The fourth angel blew his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck, and a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of their light might be darkened, and a third of the day might be kept from shining, and likewise a third of the night.

Reflection

THE SECOND VISION – THE SEVEN TRUMPETS

Overview: God is about to answer the prayers of the saints. The thunders, rumblings, flashes of lightning, and earthquake that follow are reminiscent of the theophany at Sinai (Ex 19:16ff) and remind us that the world still trembles before the presence of God…. The trumpets reveal the active involvement of God in bringing punishment upon a wicked world.

The church is not in view in the judgements that follow…. The trumpet-plagues are directed against a world that is adamant in its hostility toward God. As the intensity of judgements increases, so also so does the vehemence with which people refuse to repent. But the trumpet-judgements are not final… since they do not affect the entire earth. Their purpose is not so much retribution, as it is to lead people to repentance.

As plagues preceded the release of the children of Israel from their Egyptian masters, so plagues will precede the Exodus of the church from hostile political powers. They are the prelude to that great and final Exodus in which the church is taken out of the world and enters into the eternal presence of God…. We are dealing here with that montage of divine judgements upon a recalcitrant world which leads to the return of Jesus Christ as sovereign Lord. (Mounce, p.175-177)

The First Four Trumpets (8:6-12)

The first four trumpet-plagues involve natural catastrophes… analogous to the Egyptian plagues… the precise nature of which is unclear.

Land: Great devastation is caused by the sounding of the first trumpet summoning hail and fire, mixed with blood which scorches one-third of the land…. Its purpose is to warn people of the full wrath of God yet to fall, and in so doing to bring them to repentance.

Sea: The second trumpet brings destruction to one-third of the sea… killing marine life and destroying shipping and commerce… It is affected by something like a huge mountain of fire thrown into the sea…. The plague represents an eschatological judgement that goes beyond any explanation in terms of natural phenomenon. The purpose is to warn and lead to repentance.

Water: The third plague consists of a burning star that falls from the sky on the inland waters, turning them bitter and causing the death of many people…. The star is called Wormwood after the bitter taste of the plant by that name…. A portion of the inland waters were contaminated by this spectacular act of God and many people died as a result of drinking the water…. Like the other plagues… it is dircted primarily against the world of nature… and only indirectly affects people or the spirit world.

Light: The fourth plague darkens the sun, moon and stars for a third of the day and the night… indicating a total absence of light during that time….. This absolute darkness would be far more terrifying than a partial eclipse…. Darkness as a symbol of judegement runs throughout the OT…. The fourth trumpet-plague is a fulfillment of these prophecies (Mk 13;24; Is 13:10).

The darkness of the fourth plague anticipates the transition from divine warnings to demonic woes. It previews that ultimate excommunication of unrepentant people to the punishment prepared for the devil and his angels (Mt 25:41).

Peanut Gallery: In September, we will begin reading through the Book of Revelation (ESV). Our purpose will be devotional, i.e. to discover the word of blessing that God has for us in these troubled times… to find hope and help for our daily lives.

This will not be a Bible Study per se: we will not attempt to unravel the “mysteries” of Revelation… that is far beyond our abilities and is not our interest here. However, so as not to get too far afield, we will rely on three study resources: primary – A Commentary on the Revelation of John (George Elton Ladd); supplemental Revelation (Leon Morris) and  The Book of Revelation (Robert H. Mounce).

Glory to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Revelation 3:1-6 (ESV) – to be read aloud

“And to the angel of the church in Sardis write: ‘The words of him who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars.

Wake_up_Call“‘I know your works. You have the reputation of being alive, but you are dead. Wake up, and strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your works complete in the sight of my God. Remember, then, what you received and heard. Keep it, and repent. If you will not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come against you.

“‘Yet you have still a few names in Sardis, people who have not soiled their garments, and they will walk with me in white, for they are worthy. THE FIRST VISION – THE SEVEN LETTERS

To the Church in Sardis

Summary: The church in Sardis was considered to be alive and well, but actually it was on the point of death. Christ admonishes the congregation to wake up to their perilous condition and take steps to restore their former vitality. Otherwise he will visit them unexpectedly in judgement. Those who overcome will have their names in the book of life and stand approved before God. (Mounce, p. 92)

Sardis: The glory of Sardis lay in the past… in New Testament times she had sunk to relative obscurity…. The people of the city were widely known for their luxurious, loose way of life….. The main problem for the church is that of spiritual apathy, which may have resulted from the softness and love of luxury which characterized the secular society. (Ladd, p.55)

Christ: The problem of the church was spiritual death; Christ is the possessor of the Holy Spirit who alone can give life…. Although the church had fallen into sad spiritual complacency, she was still the object of Christ’s care. (Ladd, p.55)

Reputation: The spiritual decay of the church was not obvious to outward observation… it was known for its “good works”… for its life and vitality. But in the sight of God it was dead. Here is a picture of nominal Christianity, outwardly prosperous, busy with the externals of religious activity, but devoid of spiritual life and power. (Ladd, p.56)

Wake up call: The church was not yet entirely beyond hope…. There still remained a residuum of life which could be revived…. While their religious life was characterized by good works and charitable activities… these were a failure because they… were not infused with the Holy Spirit. (Ladd, p.56)

Unexpected judgement: Christ will come like a thief… unexpectedly…. Christ comes in many ways and this is clearly a limited coming in judgement on unrepentant sinners. Their fate is none the less fearsome because left undefined. (Morris, p.76)

The overcomers: Three promises – (1) they will be dressed in white – promise of victory and purity; (2) their names will remain in the book of life – promise of assurance of salvation;  and (3) Christ will acknowledge them before God – promise of reward beyond measure in the life to come. (Mounce, p.96; Ladd, p. 57-58)

Prayer

Risen Christ – You hold Your church and Your people in Your hand. Send us Your Spirit:

+ that the church would be alive, not only in outward appearance and reputation, but in reality through Your power at work within us….
Lord, hear us.
+ that our congregations would become stronger, walking by faith not by sight, trusting in the Spirit to lead us into all Truth…
Lord, hear us.
+ that the people in our congregations would continue their good works and charitable activities….
Lord, hear us.
+ that the church would repent of its sin, seeing herself from Your perspective, and hunger for godliness from the inside out….
Lord, hear us.
+ that the people in the church would be characterized by purity, assurance, and faithfulness….

Lord Jesus – shine Your light on our blind spots; forgive us, heal us, and set us free to love and serve You today.
We ask this for Your Name’s sake. Amen.

“‘But I have this against you, that you tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess and is teaching and seducing my servants to practice sexual immorality and to eat food sacrificed to idols. I gave her time to repent, but she refuses to repent of her sexual immorality. Behold, I will throw her onto a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her I will throw into great tribulation, unless they repent of her works, and I will strike her children dead. And all the churches will know that I am he who searches mind and heart, and I will give to each of you according to your works.

“‘But to the rest of you in Thyatira, who do not hold this teaching, who have not learned what some call the deep things of Satan, to you I say, I do not lay on you any other burden. Only hold fast what you have until I come. The one who conquers and who keeps my works until the end, to him I will give authority over the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron, as when earthen pots are broken in pieces, even as I myself have received authority from my Father. And I will give him the morning star. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’

THE FIRST VISION – THE SEVEN LETTERS

To the Church in Thyatira

Thyatira was noted as a trading center… the trade controlled by her many trade guilds… which enjoyed common meals probably dedicated to some pagan deity that typically ended in unbridled licentiousness. It would be nearly impossible for a citizen to participate in trade and industry without membership in the appropriate guild. That’s where the problem arose for the Christians in Thyatira. (Ladd, p.50)

Son of God…

This is the only occurrence of this title in Revelation…. Christ is described as the one whose eyes flash with anger and who is prepared to tread under his feet the enemies of the Christian faith. (Ladd, p.50)

I know your works…

The church in Thyatira has much to commend it… love and faith have produced service and patient endurance in the face of the problems of living in a pagan culture and environment… the church is growing in her display of Christian virtues. (Ladd, p.51)

Jezebel… a prophetess…

However, the church has tolerated evil, pernicious teaching from a woman who claimed to be speaking for God – a type of Jezebel. While the church recognized the evil character of her teaching, they apparently refused to deal with it. The result was full accommodation to pagan mores surrounding guild membership and participation in their pagan meals and immorality…. This false prophetess had been rebuked, but without success. (Ladd, p.52)

great tribulation…

The same affliction will befall the woman and those who have unreservedly accepted her teaching, adjusting their Christian profession to the immoral practices associated with the trade guilds….

Every generation of Christians must face the question, ‘How far should I accept and adopt contemporary standards and practices?’ On the one hand, Christians must not deny the faith. On the other, they must not deny their membership in society…. Christians live in the same world as their neighbors and face the same problems. They must find Christian solutions.

The woman and her followers had been so ready to conform to the lifestyle of their heathen neighbors that they had lost sight of the essential Christian position. They had exalted expediency over principle. (Morris, p.71)

to the rest of you… hold fast…

For those who have repudiated the false teaching Christ imposes no additional burden beyond that which they are currently bearing – service and patient endurance…. This does not mean that life is easy – a different quality of life is demanded from the Christian. It requires that they hold fast to what they have… until the glorious day when their Lord will appear. Perseverance is important… for the Christian life is not a battle but a campaign.

Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on us… sinners that we are:

+ That the church will be characterized by good deeds and that those deeds will increase in number and effectiveness….
+ That Christian people will be characterized by godly love in our homes, at work, and in our communities….
+ That the church will be characterized by faith in Jesus Christ….
+ That Christian people will be characterized by service to others….
+ That the church will be characterized by perseverance in the face of societal opposition….
+ That the church will not tolerate false teachers and their attending practices….
+ That Christian people will hold fast to the faith and so become conquerors who hear and keep Your word….

We ask this for Your Name’s sake. Amen.

Peanut Gallery: In September, we will begin reading through the Book of Revelation (ESV). Our purpose will be devotional, i.e. to discover the word of blessing that God has for us in these troubled times… to find hope and help for our daily lives.

This will not be a Bible Study per se: we will not attempt to unravel the “mysteries” of Revelation… that is far beyond our abilities and is not our interest here. However, so as not to get too far afield, we will rely on three study resources: primary – A Commentary on the Revelation of John (George Elton Ladd); supplemental Revelation (Leon Morris) and  The Book of Revelation (Robert H. Mounce).

The general format for Morning Prayer is adapted from the Northumbrian Community‘s Daily Office, as found in Celtic Daily Prayer (see online resources here.) On Sundays, we’ll return to the USCCB readings (see online resources here) and various liturgical resources in order to reflect the Church’s worship and concerns throughout the world. Photo illustrations and music videos, available online, are included as they illustrate or illuminate the readings. I will try to give credit and link to sources as best I can.
