Morning Prayer: Thursday,12 Nov 2020

+ In the Name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Opening:

O God, whose blessed Son came into the world that he might destroy the works of the devil and make us children of God and heirs of eternal life: Grant that, having this hope, we may purify ourselves as he is pure; that, when he comes again with power and great glory, we may be made like him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

for your loving mercy and for your truth’s sake.
Why shall the nations say, “Where now is their God?”“

Preparation:

 Holy Spirit, breath of God and fire of love, I cannot pray without your aid: Kindle in me the fire of your love, and illumine me with your light; that with a steadfast will and holy thoughts I may approach the Father in spirit and in truth; through Jesus Christ my Lord, who reigns with you and the Father in eternal union. Amen.

2 The Lord approves of those who are good,
but he condemns those who plan wickedness.

3 Wickedness never brings stability,
but the godly have deep roots.

28 The way of the godly leads to life;
that path does not lead to death.

Not to us, O LORD, but to your Name

Their gods are man-made idols

  • The god of modern thought is the creation of the thinker himself, evolved out of his own consciousness, or fashioned according to his own notion of what a god should be.
  • A god who can be fashioned by our own thoughts is no more a God than the image manufactured or produced by our own hands.
  • The true God must of necessity be his own revealer.
  • Their idols are blinded reason and diseased thought, the product of men’s muddled brains, and they will come to nothing.

Prayer –

+ Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Opening:

God of goodness and kindness, you invite all peoples to the banquet and offer them a feast beyond compare. Give us your saving grace to keep unstained the robe of our baptism until that day when you welcome us to heaven’s joyful table. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

the enemy – duplicitous and deadly

+ they conspire secretly, to entrap him and slander him
+ they lie maliciously, to wound him and ruin his reputation
+ they wait in ambush, to surprise him and attack him
+ they encourage each other in their wickedness
+ they conceal their true intent with lies and deceit

” Diligently they consider, invent, devise, and seek for wicked plans to wreak their malice. These are no common villains, but explorers in iniquity, inventors and concoctors of evil.”

God’s intervention – sudden and devastating

+ their slander shall recoil.
+ their curses shall come home to roost.
+ their tongue shall cut their throats.
+ their punishment shall be made public
+ their friends shall abandon them

They were looking to surprise the saint, but, lo! they are taken at unawares themselves; they desired to inflict deadly wounds, and are smitten themselves with wounds which none can heal…. Those who crowded around a powerful persecutor, and cringed at his feet, are among the first to desert him in the day of wrath.

fear and rejoicing – God’s justice

All shall be filled with awe by the just judgments of God…. It shall become the subject of general conversation. So strange, so pointed, so terrible shall be the Lord’s overthrow of the malicious, that it shall be spoken of in all companies… so that even the most illiterate can understand.

The victory of the oppressed shall be the victory of all upright men; the whole host of the elect shall rejoice in the triumph of virtue. While strangers fear, the children are glad in view of their Father’s power and justice. That which alarms the evil, cheers the good. Lord God of mercy, grant to us to be preserved from all our enemies, and saved in thy Son with an everlasting salvation.

Prayer:

+ For the U.S Congress

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, send down on those who hold public office in the U.S. Congress, the spirit of wisdom, charity, and justice; that with steadfast purpose they may faithfully serve in their offices to promote the well-being of all people; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

+ For the U.S. Supreme Court

Almighty God, you sit on your throne giving righteous judgment: We humbly ask you to bless the U.S. Supreme Court; give the justices a spirit of wisdom and understanding, that fearing no power but yours alone, they may discern the truth and impartially administer the law; through him who shall come to be our Judge, your Son our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

+ In the Name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Opening:

O Lord God, grant me grace to withstand the temptations of the world, the flesh, and the devil, and with a pure heart and mind to follow you, the only God; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Sovereign Lord says: “I take no pleasure in the death of wicked people.
I only want them to turn from their wicked ways so they can live.”
(Ezekiel 33:11)

Preparation:

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of my heart by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that I may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ my Lord. Amen.

“Think of God arising in his might… nothing stands before him when he once arises. Poor, sick, needy, sorrowing, sighing child of God, it is you who can bring him into this marvelous state of activity.” (Spurgeon)

“to every one who longs for it”

The “longing of the needy” here is a deep sighing and sorrow, a “groaning” under the weight of oppression and persecution. It’s a cry for relief from lying, deceitful, wicked people who have been placed in positions of authority.

The Psalmist says that God will arise in response to the groaning of his people.

Q: Do you think of this current generation as evil or perverse? Why/why not?

Q: Is wickedness exalted in this nation? What form does it take?

Q: Do you think of prayer as a form of “groaning” before God”

Q: Have you groaned before God on behalf of your country.

Q: What would you like to see happen if God were to arise in response to groaning prayer?

Almighty God, who has given us this good land for our heritage:

+ We humbly pray that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of your favor and glad to do your will.

+ Bless our land with honorable industry, sound learning, and pure conduct.
