Morning Prayer: Thursday,12 Nov 2020
+ In the Name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Opening:
O God, whose blessed Son came into the world that he might destroy the works of the devil and make us children of God and heirs of eternal life: Grant that, having this hope, we may purify ourselves as he is pure; that, when he comes again with power and great glory, we may be made like him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
“Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, but unto your Name give the praise,
for your loving mercy and for your truth’s sake.
Why shall the nations say, “Where now is their God?”“
(Psalm 115:1-2)
Preparation:
Holy Spirit, breath of God and fire of love, I cannot pray without your aid: Kindle in me the fire of your love, and illumine me with your light; that with a steadfast will and holy thoughts I may approach the Father in spirit and in truth; through Jesus Christ my Lord, who reigns with you and the Father in eternal union. Amen.

“Psalm 115”
1 Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, but unto your Name give the praise, *
for your loving mercy and for your truth’s sake.
2 Why shall the nations say, *
“Where now is their God?”
3 As for our God, he is in heaven; *
he has done whatsoever pleased him.
4 Their idols are silver and gold, *
even the work of human hands.
5 They have mouths, but they speak not; *
eyes have they, but they see not.
6 They have ears, but they hear not; *
noses have they, but they smell not.
7 They have hands, but they feel not; feet have they, but they walk not; *
neither is there any sound in their throat.
8 Those who make them are like them, *
and so are all who put their trust in them.
9 But you, O house of Israel, trust in the LORD; *
he is their helper and defender.
10 You house of Aaron, put your trust in the LORD; *
he is their helper and defender.
11 You who fear the LORD, put your trust in the LORD; *
he is their helper and defender.
12 The LORD has been mindful of us, and he shall bless us; *
he shall bless the house of Israel; he shall bless the house of Aaron;
13 He shall bless those who fear the LORD, *
both small and great together.
14 The LORD shall increase you more and more, *
you and your children after you.
15 You are the blessed of the LORD, *
who has made heaven and earth.
16 The heavens are the LORD’s; *
the earth has he given to the children of men.
17 The dead praise you not, O LORD, *
neither all those who go down into silence.
18 But we will praise the LORD, *
from this time forth for evermore.
Praise the LORD.

Proverbs (12) (The Wisdom of Solomon)
2 The Lord approves of those who are good,
but he condemns those who plan wickedness.
3 Wickedness never brings stability,
but the godly have deep roots.
28 The way of the godly leads to life;
that path does not lead to death.

Consider:

for your loving mercy and for your truth’s sake.
Why shall the nations say, “Where now is their God?”“
(Psalm 115:1-2)
Not to us, O LORD, but to your Name
- Human beings have a natural tendency to self idolatry, i.e. to glorifying ourselves…. To the extent that we take credit for success, be it by hard work or clever planning, we detract from God.
—Stephen Charnock.
- Self and God are the two things that come in competition. Now there are several sorts of self; there is carnal self, natural self, spiritual self, and glorified self; above all these God must have the preeminence.
—Thomas Manton.
Their gods are man-made idols
- The god of modern thought is the creation of the thinker himself, evolved out of his own consciousness, or fashioned according to his own notion of what a god should be.
- A god who can be fashioned by our own thoughts is no more a God than the image manufactured or produced by our own hands.
- The true God must of necessity be his own revealer.
- Their idols are blinded reason and diseased thought, the product of men’s muddled brains, and they will come to nothing.

Prayer –
+ Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.
