Eighth Sunday after Pentecost – 15 July – Mark 6:7-13 ~ sent to save

Eighth Sunday after Pentecost

+ In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen!

Opening Prayer

God of justice, God of salvation, from every land you call a people to yourself. Yours is the work we do, yours the message we carry.

Keep your people single-minded and faithful to you. Let failure not discourage us nor success beguile our hearts, as you send us to proclaim the gospel.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever.

“We’ve a Story to Tell to the Nations” – Church of God (Philippines)

1. We’ve a story to tell to the nations, that shall turn their hearts to the right, a story of truth and mercy, a story of peace and light, a story of peace and light.

Refrain:
For the darkness shall turn to dawning, and the dawning to noonday bright, and Christ’s great kingdom shall come on earth, the kingdom of love and light.

2. We’ve a song to be sung to the nations, that shall lift their hearts to the Lord, a song that shall conquer evil and shatter the spear and sword, and shatter the spear and sword.

3. We’ve a message to give to the nations, that the Lord who reigneth above has sent us His Son to save us, and show us that God is love, and show us that God is love.

4. We’ve a Savior to show to the nations, who the path of sorrow has trod, that all of the world’s great peoples may come to the truth of God, may come to the truth of God.

Gospel Reading: Mark 6:7-13 (NLT)

And he called his twelve disciples together and began sending them out two by two, giving them authority to cast out evil spirits. He told them to take nothing for their journey except a walking stick—no food, no traveler’s bag, no money. He allowed them to wear sandals but not to take a change of clothes.

“Wherever you go,” he said, “stay in the same house until you leave town. But if any place refuses to welcome you or listen to you, shake its dust from your feet as you leave to show that you have abandoned those people to their fate.”

So the disciples went out, telling everyone they met to repent of their sins and turn to God. And they cast out many demons and healed many sick people, anointing them with olive oil.

Prayers of Intercession:

God our Helper: We turn to you with confidence and faith. Hear these prayers and those that are on our hearts –

+ For believers everywhere – that we may experience your mercy and grace in our lives….
+ For all who proclaim the message of repentance and restoration - that we may persevere….
+ For all who have turned away from you – that they may come to their senses and come home….
+ For all who hunger and thirst for justice – that we may be satisfied….
+ For all who are sick and suffering – that we may receive healing, according to your will….
+ For all who are dying and those whose death is immanent – that they may be welcomed into your Kingdom….
+ For our loved ones who have already died in Christ – that they may rest eternally in your peace….

God our Helper: You are our refuge and strength; you are our hope and salvation. Accept our prayers and help us, according to your perfect purpose for our lives. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

“Jesus Saves” – Buddy Greene, featuring Russ Taff

1. We have heard the joyful sound: Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
Spread the tidings all around: Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
Bear the news to every land, Climb the steeps and cross the waves;
Onward!—’tis our Lord’s command; Jesus saves! Jesus saves!

2. Waft it on the rolling tide, Jesus saves, Jesus saves;
Tell to sinners far and wide, Jesus saves, Jesus saves;
Sing, ye islands of the sea, Echo back, ye ocean caves;
Earth shall keep her jubilee, Jesus saves, Jesus saves.

3. Sing above the battle’s strife, Jesus saves, Jesus saves;
By His death and endless life, Jesus saves, Jesus saves;
Sing it softly thru the gloom, When the heart for mercy craves,
Sing in triumph o’er the tomb, Jesus saves, Jesus saves.

4. Give the winds a mighty voice, Jesus saves, Jesus saves;
Let the nations now rejoice. Jesus saves, Jesus saves;
Shout salvation full and free, Highest hills and deepest caves,
This our song of victory, Jesus saves, Jesus saves.

Morning Prayer

It is the Father’s will that mankind should see him in the face of his beloved Son. Let us honor him as we say: Holy is your name.

+ Christ greeted us with good news: may the world hear it through me, and find hope.
+ I praise and thank you, Lord of heaven and earth; you are the hope and joy of mankind in every age.
+ I pray that your coming may transform your people; and renew our youth and vigor in the service of mankind.
+ I pray for Christians who suffer for their belief: sustain them in their hope.

Holy is your name, Father God: grant me a true understanding of your saving mercy and grace, so that, freed from fear and from the power of my foes, I may serve you faithfully all the days of my life. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
