The 4th Sunday in Ordinary Time: 28 Jan – Mark 1:21-28 ~ the Kingdom authority of Jesus

The Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

+ In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen!

Opening Prayer

Faithful God, your Holy One, Jesus of Nazareth, spoke the truth with authority, and you confirmed his teaching by wondrous deeds. Through his healing presence, drive far from us all that is unholy, so that by word and deed we may proclaim him Messiah and Lord and bear witness to your power to heal and save. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

Gospel Reading: Mark 1:21-28 (NLT)

Jesus and his companions went to the town of Capernaum. When the Sabbath day came, he went into the synagogue and began to teach. The people were amazed at his teaching, for he taught with real authority—quite unlike the teachers of religious law.

Suddenly, a man in the synagogue who was possessed by an evil spirit cried out, “Why are you interfering with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”

But Jesus reprimanded him. “Be quiet! Come out of the man,” he ordered. At that, the evil spirit screamed, threw the man into a convulsion, and then came out of him.

Amazement gripped the audience, and they began to discuss what had happened. “What sort of new teaching is this?” they asked excitedly. “It has such authority! Even evil spirits obey his orders!” The news about Jesus spread quickly throughout the entire region of Galilee.

Prayers of Intercession:

Abba Father: You have adopted us into your family of faith and made us heirs of your eternal Kingdom. Speak Kingdom words of hope, help, and healing into the lives of your children around the world, especially –

+ For all who lead in Christ’s name, that their words and actions may demonstrate your Kingdom presence….
+ For all who prophesy in Christ’s name, that they may proclaim your Kingdom message of grace and truth….
+ For all who teach in Christ’s name, that they may help us discover your Kingdom presence here among us….
+ For all who teach children in Christ’s name, that they may teach your Kingdom truths with love and grace….
+ For all who suffer persecution for their faith in Christ, that they may be filled with your Kingdom power….
+ For all believers in Christ who are sick in body, mind, or spirit, that they may experience your Kingdom healing….
+ For all who have died in Christ, that they may live in your Kingdom in heaven forever….

Abba Father: You gently lead your children by your hand; hear our prayers and graciously answer them, through Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. Amen.

“In Christ Alone”Covenant Christian High School (Grand Rapids, MI)

In Christ alone my hope is found | He is my light, my strength, my song | This Cornerstone, this solid ground | Firm through the fiercest drought and storm | What heights of love, what depths of peace | When fears are stilled, when strivings cease | My Comforter, my All in All | Here in the love of Christ I stand

In Christ alone, who took on flesh | Fullness of God in helpless babe | This gift of love and righteousness | Scorned by the ones He came to save | ‘Til on that cross as Jesus died | The wrath of God was satisfied | For every sin on Him was laid | Here in the death of Christ I live, I live

There in the ground His body lay | Light of the world by darkness slain | Then bursting forth in glorious Day | Up from the grave He rose again | And as He stands in victory | Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me | For I am His and He is mine | Bought with the precious blood of Christ

No guilt in life, no fear in death | This is the power of Christ in me | From life’s first cry to final breath | Jesus commands my destiny | No power of hell, no scheme of man | Can ever pluck me from His hand | Till He returns or calls me home | Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand

Morning Prayer: 12 January – Romans 13:11-13; Mark 1:21-28 ~ the night is almost gone

Tuesday of the First Week of Ordinary Time

+ In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen!

Opening Sentence

Receive the word of God, not as the word of men, but as it truly is, the word of God.

Morning Reading: Romans 13:11-13 (NLT)

Time is running out. Wake up, for our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.

daybreak

The night is almost gone; the day of salvation will soon be here. So remove your dark deeds like dirty clothes, and put on the shining armor of right living. Because we belong to the day, we must live decent lives for all to see. Don’t participate in the darkness of wild parties and drunkenness, or in sexual promiscuity and immoral living, or in quarreling and jealousy.

Morning Reading: Mark 1:21-28 (NLT)

Jesus and his companions went to the town of Capernaum. When the Sabbath day came, he went into the synagogue and began to teach. The people were amazed at his teaching, for he taught with real authority — quite unlike the teachers of religious law.

Jesus taught with authority

Suddenly, a man in the synagogue who was possessed by an evil spirit began shouting, “Why are you interfering with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”

Jesus cut him short.

Morning Prayer

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ, the high priest of our faith – our Savior and our God.

+ Almighty King, you have made us a royal priesthood – may we offer you a constant sacrifice of praise.
+ Help us to live according to your Word and Spirit – may we dwell in you, and you in us.
+ Come to us Everlasting Wisdom – dwell with us and work in our daily decision-making.
+ Help us to be considerate and kind – grant that we may bring joy, not pain, to those we meet.

Look with favor on our morning prayer, Lord, and in your saving love let your light penetrate the hidden places of our hearts. May no sordid desires darken our minds, renewed and enlightened as we are by your heavenly grace. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

“Awakening” – Hillsong

Blessing

Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it. (1 Thessalonians 5:23-24)

+ In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen!
