Epiphany Prayer: 5th Saturday, 13 Feb 2021 – Psalm 50:1-6; 1 Kings 16:1-7; Luke 19:41-44 ~ we are the heart of Christ

Epiphany Prayer: 5th Saturday; 13 Feb 2021

+ In the Name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Opening:

Out of your power and compassion, O God,
you sent your Son into our afflicted world
to proclaim the day of salvation.
Heal the brokenhearted, bind up our wounds.
Bring us health of body and spirit
and raise us to new life in your service.
We pray through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever. Amen.

When Jesus drew near Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it, saying,
“Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace!
But now they are hidden from your eyes.”
(Luke 19:41-42)

16 And the word of the Lord came to Jehu the son of Hanani against Baasha, saying, 2 “Since I exalted you out of the dust and made you leader over my people Israel, and you have walked in the way of Jeroboam and have made my people Israel to sin, provoking me to anger with their sins, 3 behold, I will utterly sweep away Baasha and his house, and I will make your house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat. 4 Anyone belonging to Baasha who dies in the city the dogs shall eat, and anyone of his who dies in the field the birds of the heavens shall eat.”

5 Now the rest of the acts of Baasha and what he did, and his might, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel? 6 And Baasha slept with his fathers and was buried at Tirzah, and Elah his son reigned in his place. 7 Moreover, the word of the Lord came by the prophet Jehu the son of Hanani against Baasha and his house, both because of all the evil that he did in the sight of the Lord, provoking him to anger with the work of his hands, in being like the house of Jeroboam, and also because he destroyed it.

Jesus Weeps over Jerusalem

41 And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, 42 saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. 43 For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side 44 and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”

Prayer:

+ Merciful God, you desire that none should perish, but rather that they should turn to you and live; and through your only Son you have revealed yourself as the God who pardons iniquity.

_ Have mercy on the unrepentant and those who do not believe, especially those in Jerusalem.

_ Awaken in them, by your Word and Holy Spirit, a deep sense of their sinfulness and peril.

_ Take from them all ignorance, hardness of heart, and contempt of your Word.

_ Grant them grace to confess by faith that there is no other Name under heaven given among men by which they must be saved, but only the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

+ Merciful God, bring them home and number them among your children, that they may be yours for ever; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.

+ Almighty God our Savior, may your Holy Spirit work through our words, deeds, and prayers, that the lost may be found and the dead made alive, and that all your redeemed may rejoice around your throne; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

+ Christ as a light, illumine and guide us. Christ as a shield, overshadow us. Christ under us; Christ over us; Christ beside us on our left and our right. This day be within and without us, lowly and meek, yet all-powerful. Be in the heart of each to whom we speak; in the mouth of each who speaks to us. This day be within and without us, lowly and meek, yet all-powerful. Christ as a light; Christ as a shield; Christ beside us on our left and our right.

May the peace of the Lord Christ go with us, wherever He may send us.
May He guide us through the wilderness, protect us through the storm.
May He bring us home rejoicing at the wonders He has shown us.

+ In the Name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Opening:

Faithful God, your Holy One, Jesus of Nazareth,
spoke the truth with authority,
and you confirmed his teaching by wondrous deeds.
Through his healing presence, drive far from us all that is unholy,
so that by word and deed we may proclaim him Messiah and Lord
and bear witness to your power to heal and save.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever.

“Remember this and stand firm…
for I am God, and there is no other.
I am God, and there is none like me…
‘My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose.’”
(Isaiah 46:8-11)

The Idols of Babylon and the One True God

46 Bel bows down; Nebo stoops;
their idols are on beasts and livestock;
these things you carry are borne
as burdens on weary beasts.

3 “Listen to me, O house of Jacob,
all the remnant of the house of Israel,
