Morning Prayer: Tue, 06 Sep – Psalm 63:4; Exodus 17:8-16; 1 Timothy 2:8 ~ a call to prayer

+ In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen!

Opening Sentence

One thing I have asked of the Lord, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life; to behold the beauty of the Lord and to seek Him in His temple.

I will praise you as long as I live, lifting up my hands to you in prayer.

Reading: Exodus 17:8-16 (NLT)

While the people of Israel were still at Rephidim, the warriors of Amalek attacked them. Moses commanded Joshua, “Choose some men to go out and fight the army of Amalek for us. Tomorrow, I will stand at the top of the hill, holding the staff of God in my hand.”

So Joshua did what Moses had commanded and fought the army of Amalek. Meanwhile, Moses, Aaron, and Hur climbed to the top of a nearby hill. As long as Moses held up the staff in his hand, the Israelites had the advantage. But whenever he dropped his hand, the Amalekites gained the advantage. Moses’ arms soon became so tired he could no longer hold them up. So Aaron and Hur found a stone for him to sit on. Then they stood on each side of Moses, holding up his hands. So his hands held steady until sunset. As a result, Joshua overwhelmed the army of Amalek in battle.

After the victory, the Lord instructed Moses, “Write this down on a scroll as a permanent reminder, and read it aloud to Joshua: I will erase the memory of Amalek from under heaven.” Moses built an altar there and named it Yahweh-Nissi (which means “the Lord is my banner”). He said, “They have raised their fist against the Lord’s throne, so now the Lord will be at war with Amalek generation after generation.”

In every place of worship, I want men to pray with holy hands lifted up to God, free from anger and controversy.

Prayer

This day is Your gift to me; I take it, Lord, from Your hand and thank You for the wonder of it.

God be with me in this Your day, every day and every way, with me and for me in this Your day; and the love and affection of heaven be toward me.

+ All that I am and all that I do, Lord – I place into Your hands.
+ Everything I work for and hope for, Lord – I place in your hands.
+ The troubles that weary me and the thoughts that disturb me, Lord – I place in Your hands.
+ Each person that I pray for and each person I care for, Lord – I place in Your hands.

Hands, Lord, Your gift to us, we stretch them up to You. Always You Hold them.

Help me to find my happiness in my acceptance of what is Your purpose for me: in friendly eyes, in work well done, in quietness born of trust, and, most of all, in the awareness of Your presence in my spirit.

Psalm 119:1-4 ESV:

Blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord! Blessed are those who keep his testimonies, who seek him with their whole heart, who also do no wrong, but walk in his ways! You have commanded your precepts to be kept diligently.

Nehemiah 8:2-6 ESV:

So Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly, both men and women and all who could understand what they heard, on the first day of the seventh month. And he read from it facing the square before the Water Gate from early morning until midday, in the presence of the men and the women and those who could understand. And the ears of all the people were attentive to the Book of the Law. And Ezra the scribe stood on a wooden platform that they had made for the purpose. Matthew 22:37-38 ESV:

And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment….”

Reflection: “With Understanding”

This month we will be reading slowly through Psalm 119, the longest psalm, which gives thanks for God’s laws which give understanding and bring life. We pray God will teach us to obey Him, to honour Him, and to praise Him with understanding.

In John Irving’s novel The Cider House Rules the rules are carefully posted up where everyone can see them, but it makes no difference because the people who have to keep them cannot read. The rules still apply, and so do the penalties for breaking them. God’s laws are in-built in our world, so lack of understanding is dangerous….

The word of God challenges us, “Do you seek Him with all your mind?” And we respond, Amen. Lord have mercy!

Prayer: Heavenly Father – as I embark on this new season to discover Your Word to me through the Scriptures – give me Your Word for light, and Your Spirit for sight… that I might love You with all my heart and soul and mind… and keep my eyes focused on Jesus, my Savior and my Lord. Amen.

Reflection: “In The Present Moment” – Anne Morrow Lindbergh

Hurry is an unpleasant thing in itself, but also very unpleasant for whoever is around it. Some people came into my room and rushed in and rushed out and even when they were there they were not there – they were in the moment ahead or the moment behind. Some people who came in just for a moment were all there, completely in that moment.

Live from day-to-day, just from day-to-day. If you do so, you worry less and live more richly. If you let yourself be absorbed completely, if you surrender completely to the moments as they pass, you live more richly in those moments.

I do not think, it is lack of time that keeps me from doing things, it is that I do not want enough to do them.

Holy Michael, archangel, defend us in the day of battle; be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. And he came and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour? Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

And again he went away and prayed, saying the same words. And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy, and they did not know what to answer him.

Reflection:

Help me to know that the secret of contentment lies in organizing the self in the direction of simplicity.

Unless You have another task for me, keep me vigilant in prayer.

Reflection:

Make this the prayer of your heart: Lord show me the right seat, find me the fitting task, give me the willing heart.

Commit your way to the Lord. Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him. Do not fret – it only leads to evil.
