17th Sunday after Pentecost, 06 Oct 2019, Luke 17:5-10 ~ on Faith and Duty

Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost

+ In the Name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Opening Prayer:

God, the rock of our salvation, whose gifts can never fail, deepen the faith you have already bestowed and let its power be seen in your servants. We pray through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen

” Ye servants of God! your master proclaim” – CSI Christ church Nagercoil – 37th Church Day

You servants of God, your Master proclaim, and publish abroad his wonderful name;
the name all-victorious of Jesus extol;his kingdom is glorious and rules over all.

God rules in the height, almighty to save; though hid from our sight, his presence we have;
the great congregation his triumph shall sing, ascribing salvation to Jesus our King.

“Salvation to God, who sits on the throne!” let all cry aloud, and honor the Son;
the praises of Jesus the angels proclaim, fall down on their faces and worship the Lamb.

Then let us adore and give him his right: all glory and power, all wisdom and might,
all honor and blessing with angels above and thanks never ceasing for infinite love.

Gospel Reading: Luke 17:5-10 (NLT)

The apostles said to the Lord, “Show us how to increase our faith.”

The Lord answered, “If you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘May you be uprooted and be planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you!

“When a servant comes in from plowing or taking care of sheep, does his master say, ‘Come in and eat with me’? No, he says, ‘Prepare my meal, put on your apron, and serve me while I eat. Then you can eat later.’ And does the master thank the servant for doing what he was told to do? Of course not. In the same way, when you obey me you should say, ‘We are unworthy servants who have simply done our duty.’”

Intercession:

O God, our Maker and our Rock: Sustain us with Your loving-kindness and hear our prayers –

+ For believers around the world, that we might live by faith, using our gifts  to serve you alone….
+ For all who proclaim the Good News of the Gospel, that they may be welcomed at home and abroad….
+ For our families, that our relationships may be filled with tenderness, forgiveness, and mutual respect….
+ For women, men and children who live in fear of violence in their homes, that they may find a place of safety….
+ For families in our society without a home, that they may soon have a place where they can live without stress….
+ For our country, that we may rediscover the values that support and nourish family life….

O God, our Maker and our Rock: You know all our needs, show us your mercy and grace, and help all those in need, we pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.

17th Sunday after Pentecost

+ In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen!

Opening Prayer

Merciful God, you alone judge rightly and search the depths of the heart. Make us swift to do your will and slow to judge our neighbor, that we may walk with those who follow the way of repentance and faith and so enter your heavenly kingdom. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever.

Reading: Matthew 20:1-16 (NLT)

Parable of the Two Sons

“But what do you think about this? A man with two sons told the older boy, ‘Son, go out and work in the vineyard today.’ The son answered, ‘No, I won’t go,’ but later he changed his mind and went anyway. Then the father told the other son, ‘You go,’ and he said, ‘Yes, sir, I will.’ But he didn’t go.

“Which of the two obeyed his father?”

They replied, “The first.”

Then Jesus explained his meaning: “I tell you the truth, corrupt tax collectors and prostitutes will get into the Kingdom of God before you do. For John the Baptist came and showed you the right way to live, but you didn’t believe him, while tax collectors and prostitutes did. And even when you saw this happening, you refused to believe him and repent of your sins.

Intercessory Prayer

The Lord’s mercy never ends, let us approach his throne of grace with confidence –

+ For our church leaders — that they may practice what they preach…. Lord, hear us.
+ For ourselves — that our faith in Christ may be more than lip service…. Lord, hear us.
+ For all those suffering because of natural and human disasters — that your people may provide the help they need…. Lord, hear us.
+ For all those living on the margins of society — that your people may provide help when they need it…. Lord, hear us.
+ For respect for life at all its stages — that women and children may be protected from every danger…. Lord, hear us.
+ For all those who endure sickness, in mind or body — that they may receive your healing mercy…. Lord, hear us.
+ For all who have suffered death – that they may be raised to life through Jesus’ resurrection…. Lord, hear us.

O God of endless goodness, your love and mercy have no end: hear our prayers we offer in faith, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
