Wednesday of the 10th Week in Ordinary Time, 10 Jun 2020 – Titus 3:1-15, Psalm 109 ~ devote yourself to doing good

Wednesday of the 10th Week in Ordinary Time, 10 Jun 2020

+ In the Name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Opening:

Merciful and gracious Father, you showed the fullness of your love when you gave your only Son for our salvation and sent down upon us the power of your Spirit. Complete within us the work of your love, that we who have communion in Christ may come to share fully the undying life he lives with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

When God our Savior revealed his kindness and love, he saved us,
not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins,
giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit.

A Reading from the Pastoral Epistles: Titus 3:1-15 (NLT)

Do What Is Good

Remind the believers to submit to the government and its officers. They should be obedient, always ready to do what is good. They must not slander anyone and must avoid quarreling. Instead, they should be gentle and show true humility to everyone.

Once we, too, were foolish and disobedient. We were misled and became slaves to many lusts and pleasures. Our lives were full of evil and envy, and we hated each other. But—

When God our Savior revealed his kindness and love, he saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit. He generously poured out the Spirit upon us through Jesus Christ our Savior. Because of his grace he made us right in his sight and gave us confidence that we will inherit eternal life.

This is a trustworthy saying, and I want you to insist on these teachings so that all who trust in God will devote themselves to doing good. These teachings are good and beneficial for everyone.

Do not get involved in foolish discussions about spiritual pedigrees or in quarrels and fights about obedience to Jewish laws. These things are useless and a waste of time. If people are causing divisions among you, give a first and second warning. After that, have nothing more to do with them. For people like that have turned away from the truth, and their own sins condemn them.

Paul’s Final Remarks and Greetings

I am planning to send either Artemas or Tychicus to you. As soon as one of them arrives, do your best to meet me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to stay there for the winter. Do everything you can to help Zenas the lawyer and Apollos with their trip. See that they are given everything they need. Our people must learn to do good by meeting the urgent needs of others; then they will not be unproductive.

Everybody here sends greetings. Please give my greetings to the believers—all who love us.

May God’s grace be with you all.
__________

Morning Prayer:

Nothing can separate us from the love of Christ, for he promised to be with his Church until the end of time.
– Stay with us, Lord Jesus.

In all things we are victorious through your love; take us into your care today.
– Stay with us, Lord Jesus.

Let the love of your Holy Spirit be in our hearts: so that we may consecrate this day to you.
– Stay with us, Lord Jesus.

Help all Christians to answer your call: may they be salt to the earth and light to the world.
– Stay with us, Lord Jesus.

We pray for all those in industry: may they work in harmony for justice and for the good of the whole community.
– Stay with us, Lord Jesus.

Shed your clear light on our hearts, Lord, so that walking continually in the way of your commandments we may never be deceived or misled.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Psalm 109:1-5, 26-31 (TLB)

  • O God of my praise, don’t stand silent and aloof while the wicked slander me and tell their lies. They have no reason to hate and fight me, yet they do!
  • I love them, but even while I am praying for them, they are trying to destroy me. They return evil for good, and hatred for love.
  • Help me, O Lord my God! Save me because you are loving and kind. Do it publicly, so all will see that you yourself have done it.
  • Then let them curse me if they like—I won’t mind that if you are blessing me! For then all their efforts to destroy me will fail, and I shall go right on rejoicing!
  • Make them fail in everything they do. Clothe them with disgrace.
  • But I will give repeated thanks to the Lord, praising him to everyone. For he stands beside the poor and hungry to save them from their enemies.

Promote Right Teaching

As for you, Titus, promote the kind of living that reflects wholesome teaching. Teach the older men to exercise self-control, to be worthy of respect, and to live wisely. They must have sound faith and be filled with love and patience.

Similarly, teach the older women to live in a way that honors God. They must not slander others or be heavy drinkers. Instead, they should teach others what is good. These older women must train the younger women to love their husbands and their children, to live wisely and be pure, to work in their homes, to do good, and to be submissive to their husbands. Then they will not bring shame on the word of God.

In the same way, encourage the young men to live wisely. And you yourself must be an example to them by doing good works of every kind. Let everything you do reflect the integrity and seriousness of your teaching. Teach the truth so that your teaching can’t be criticized. Then those who oppose us will be ashamed and have nothing bad to say about us.

Slaves must always obey their masters and do their best to please them. They must not talk back or steal, but must show themselves to be entirely trustworthy and good. Then they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive in every way.

For the grace of God has been revealed, bringing salvation to all people. And we are instructed to turn from godless living and sinful pleasures. We should live in this evil world with wisdom, righteousness, and devotion to God, while we look forward with hope to that wonderful day when the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, will be revealed. He gave his life to free us from every kind of sin, to cleanse us, and to make us his very own people, totally committed to doing good deeds.

You must teach these things and encourage the believers to do them. You have the authority to correct them when necessary, so don’t let anyone disregard what you say.

Morning Prayer:

Merciful and gracious Father: You have revealed your salvation to all people. May our lives bring you honor, and attract others to the truth of your Word.

Lord Jesus, by your rising to new life you have freed us from fear….

– Lord, lead us to the truth.

Lord Jesus, as this day begins we remember that you are risen, and therefore we look to the future with confidence….

– Lord, lead us to the truth.

We offer you our prayers this morning, take to yourself our cares, our hopes, and our needs….

– Lord, lead us to the truth.

Deepen in us our love for you today, so that in all things we may find our good, and the good of others….

– Lord, lead us to the truth.

Lord Jesus, we pray that through our own troubles, we may learn to feel the sufferings of others; help us to show them your compassion….

– Lord, lead us to the truth.

True Light of the world, Lord Jesus Christ, as you enlighten all men for their salvation, give us grace, we pray, to herald your coming by preparing the ways of justice and of peace. Who live and reign with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Greetings from Paul

This letter is from Paul, a slave of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ. I have been sent to proclaim faith to those God has chosen and to teach them to know the truth that shows them how to live godly lives. This truth gives them confidence that they have eternal life, which God—who does not lie—promised them before the world began. And now at just the right time he has revealed this message, which we announce to everyone. It is by the command of God our Savior that I have been entrusted with this work for him.

I am writing to Titus, my true son in the faith that we share.

May God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior give you grace and peace.

Titus’s Work in Crete

I left you on the island of Crete so you could complete our work there and appoint elders in each town as I instructed you. An elder must live a blameless life. He must be faithful to his wife, and his children must be believers who don’t have a reputation for being wild or rebellious. A church leader is a manager of God’s household, so he must live a blameless life. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered; he must not be a heavy drinker, violent, or dishonest with money.

Rather, he must enjoy having guests in his home, and he must love what is good. He must live wisely and be just. He must live a devout and disciplined life. He must have a strong belief in the trustworthy message he was taught; then he will be able to encourage others with wholesome teaching and show those who oppose it where they are wrong.

For there are many rebellious people who engage in useless talk and deceive others. This is especially true of those who insist on circumcision for salvation. They must be silenced, because they are turning whole families away from the truth by their false teaching. And they do it only for money. Even one of their own men, a prophet from Crete, has said about them, “The people of Crete are all liars, cruel animals, and lazy gluttons.” This is true. So reprimand them sternly to make them strong in the faith. They must stop listening to Jewish myths and the commands of people who have turned away from the truth.

Everything is pure to those whose hearts are pure. But nothing is pure to those who are corrupt and unbelieving, because their minds and consciences are corrupted. Such people claim they know God, but they deny him by the way they live. They are detestable and disobedient, worthless for doing anything good.
__________

Morning Prayer:

Jesus Christ has given us all a share in his priesthood.
We offer our prayers and ourselves in union with him.
– Lord, accept our love and service.

Jesus Christ, you are the eternal priest:
make this morning’s offering acceptable to the Father.
– Lord, accept our love and service.

Lord, you are love itself:
grant that we may love you.
– Lord, accept our love and service.

Give us today the fruits of the Holy Spirit:
make us patient, kind and gentle.
– Lord, accept our love and service.

Give us the discernment to know the needs of our neighbors,
and give us the courage to love them as brothers.
– Lord, accept our love and service.

Almighty Lord and God, protect us by your power throughout the course of this day, even as you have enabled us to begin it. Do not let us turn aside to any sin, but let our every thought, word and deed aim at doing what is pleasing in your sight. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Saturday of the 9th Week in Ordinary Time – 06 Jun 2020 – 1 Timothy 6:3-21, Psalm 104 ~ true wealth = godliness with contentment

Saturday of the 9th Week in Ordinary Time, 06 Jun 2020

+ In the Name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Opening:

Lord God, let the grace of the Holy Spirit come upon us, so that we may hold fast to your will with fidelity and show it forth in a holy life. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

True godliness with contentment is itself great wealth.
After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it.
So if we have enough food and clothing, let us be content.

__________

A Reading from the Pastoral Epistles: 1 Timothy 6:3-21 (NLT)

False Teaching and True Riches

Teach these things, Timothy, and encourage everyone to obey them. Some people may contradict our teaching, but these are the wholesome teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. These teachings promote a godly life. Anyone who teaches something different is arrogant and lacks understanding. Such a person has an unhealthy desire to quibble over the meaning of words. This stirs up arguments ending in jealousy, division, slander, and evil suspicions. These people always cause trouble. Their minds are corrupt, and they have turned their backs on the truth. To them, a show of godliness is just a way to become wealthy.

Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth. After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it. 8 So if we have enough food and clothing, let us be content.

But people who long to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.

Paul’s Final Instructions

But you, Timothy, are a man of God; so run from all these evil things. Pursue righteousness and a godly life, along with faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness. Fight the good fight for the true faith. Hold tightly to the eternal life to which God has called you, which you have declared so well before many witnesses. And I charge you before God, who gives life to all, and before Christ Jesus, who gave a good testimony before Pontius Pilate, that you obey this command without wavering. Then no one can find fault with you from now until our Lord Jesus Christ comes again. For,

At just the right time Christ will be revealed from heaven by the blessed and only almighty God, the King of all kings and Lord of all lords. He alone can never die, and he lives in light so brilliant that no human can approach him. No human eye has ever seen him, nor ever will. All honor and power to him forever! Amen.

Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment. Tell them to use their money to do good. They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others. By doing this they will be storing up their treasure as a good foundation for the future so that they may experience true life.

Timothy, guard what God has entrusted to you. Avoid godless, foolish discussions with those who oppose you with their so-called knowledge. Some people have wandered from the faith by following such foolishness.

May God’s grace be with you all.
__________

Morning Prayer:

O Lord our God: You made us and we depend on you for the necessities of life.
Send forth your life-giving Spirit and make us like new again!

+ that we may accept the true teaching of our Lord Jesus Christ that produces godly lives….

+ that we may reject arguments that lead to jealousy, quarrels, insults, and evil mistrust….

+ that we may reject the love of money and be satisfied with basic food, clothing and shelter….

+ that we may be rich in good works – ready to share what we have with others in need….

+ that we may always try to do what’s right – showing faith, love, patience, and gentleness….

+ that we may fight to keep our faith in Jesus Christ who gives true life and purpose to everything….

O Lord our God: You made us and we depend on you for the necessities of life.
Send forth your life-giving Spirit and make us like new again!
