Opening Prayer

Keep, O Lord, your household the Church in continual godliness; that through your protection we may be free from all adversities, and devotedly serve you in good works, to the glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Gospel Reading: Mark 10:2-16 (NLT)

Some Pharisees came and tried to trap him with this question: “Should a man be allowed to divorce his wife?”

Jesus answered them with a question: “What did Moses say in the law about divorce?”

“Well, he permitted it,” they replied. “He said a man can give his wife a written notice of divorce and send her away.”

But Jesus responded, “He wrote this commandment only as a concession to your hard hearts. But ‘God made them male and female’ from the beginning of creation. ‘This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.’ Since they are no longer two but one, let no one split apart what God has joined together.”

Later, when he was alone with his disciples in the house, they brought up the subject again. He told them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries someone else commits adultery against her. And if a woman divorces her husband and marries someone else, she commits adultery.”

One day some parents brought their children to Jesus so he could touch and bless them. But the disciples scolded the parents for bothering him.

When Jesus saw what was happening, he was angry with his disciples. He said to them, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of God belongs to those who are like these children. I tell you the truth, anyone who doesn’t receive the Kingdom of God like a child will never enter it.” Then he took the children in his arms and placed his hands on their heads and blessed them.

Prayers of Intercession:

Eternal God, creator and preserver of all life, author of salvation, and giver of all grace: Look with favor upon all men and and women whom you made one flesh in marriage, and enable us to fulfill the vows we have made –

+ Grant us wisdom and devotion in the ordering of our common life, that we may be to each other a partner in prayer, a strength in need, a counselor in perplexity, a comfort in sorrow, and a companion in joy…. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

+ Grant that our wills may be so knit together in your will, and our spirits in your Spirit, that we may grow in love and devotion to you and with one another all the days of our lives…. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

+ Give us courage, when we hurt each other, to recognize and acknowledge our faults, to seek your forgiveness, and to forgive and be reconciled to one another…. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

+ May our union in marriage be a sign of the love between Christ and his Church, and a joyful witness to the world…. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

+ Grant us, if it be your will, the gift and heritage of children, and the grace to bring them up to know you, to love you, and to serve you…. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

+ Grant that we may so love, honor, and cherish each other in faithfulness and patience, in wisdom and true godliness, that our homes may be a haven of blessing and peace…. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Eternal God, bless all men and and women whom you made one flesh in marriage, and enable us to fulfill the vows we have made through faith and trust in Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

“The Wedding Song ( There Is Love )” – Noel Paul Stookey

He is now to be among you at the calling of your hearts
Rest assured this troubadour is acting on his part
The union of your spirits here has caused him to remain
For whenever two or more of you are gathered in his name
There is love
There is love

Well a man shall leave his mother and a woman leave her home
They shall travel on to where the two shall be as one
As it was in the beginning, is now until the end
Woman draws her life from man and gives it back again
And there is love
There is love

Well then what’s to be reason for becoming man and wife
Is it love that brings you here, or love that brings you life
For if loving is the answer, then who’s the giving for?
Do you believe in something that you’ve never seen before?
Oh, there’s love
Oh there’s love

Oh the marriage of your spirits here has caused him to remain
For whenever two or more of you are gathered in his name
There is love
Ah there’s love
