Morning Prayer: Thu, 26 Jan – Psalm 22:1-2, 7-11; Deuteronomy 31:8; Mark 15:33-39 ~ feeling God-forsaken?

Thursday of the Third Week in Ordinary Time

+ In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen!

Opening Sentence

Create a clean heart within me, O God,
so that it may become Your chosen shelter
and the resting place of the Holy Spirit.

Reading: Psalm 22:1-2, 7-11 (NLT)

My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? Why are you so far away when I groan for help? Every day I call to you, my God, but you do not answer. Every night I lift my voice, but I find no relief.

Everyone who sees me mocks me. They sneer and shake their heads, saying, “Is this the one who relies on the Lord? Then let the Lord save him! If the Lord loves him so much, let the Lord rescue him!”

Yet you brought me safely from my mother’s womb and led me to trust you at my mother’s breast. I was thrust into your arms at my birth. You have been my God from the moment I was born.

Do not stay so far from me, for trouble is near, and no one else can help me.

Reading: Deuteronomy 31:8 (NLT)

“Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor abandon you.”

Reading: Mark 15:33-39 (NLT)

At noon, darkness fell across the whole land until three o’clock. Then at three o’clock Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?”

Some of the bystanders misunderstood and thought he was calling for the prophet Elijah. One of them ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, holding it up to him on a reed stick so he could drink. “Wait!” he said. “Let’s see whether Elijah comes to take him down!”

Then Jesus uttered another loud cry and breathed his last. And the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.

When the Roman officer who stood facing him saw how he had died, he exclaimed, “This man truly was the Son of God!”

Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation; You are my help and salvation.

+ Lord, You have personally gone before me; You promise to never fail me or forsake me.
+ Lord, be with me as I start a new day; move my heart to seek You and my will to serve You.
+ Deepen my awareness of Your presence; teach me reverence and love for all that You made.
+ To know You is to love those You created; let my life and my work serve those I meet today.

Almighty God, empower me with Your Spirit: that I may live with integrity and godliness in this world, prepared to enter my true home in heaven. Through my Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
