Morning Reading – Matthew 14:1-21 (NLT)

The Death of John the Baptist

When Herod Antipas, the ruler of Galilee, heard about Jesus, he said to his advisers, “This must be John the Baptist raised from the dead! That is why he can do such miracles.”

For Herod had arrested and imprisoned John as a favor to his wife Herodias (the former wife of Herod’s brother Philip). John had been telling Herod, “It is against God’s law for you to marry her.” Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of a riot, because all the people believed John was a prophet.

But at a birthday party for Herod, Herodias’s daughter performed a dance that greatly pleased him, so he promised with a vow to give her anything she wanted. At her mother’s urging, the girl said, “I want the head of John the Baptist on a tray!” Then the king regretted what he had said; but because of the vow he had made in front of his guests, he issued the necessary orders. So John was beheaded in the prison, and his head was brought on a tray and given to the girl, who took it to her mother. Later, John’s disciples came for his body and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus what had happened.

Jesus Feeds Five Thousand

As soon as Jesus heard the news, he left in a boat to a remote area to be alone. But the crowds heard where he was headed and followed on foot from many towns. Jesus saw the huge crowd as he stepped from the boat, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick.

That evening the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away so they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves.”

But Jesus said, “That isn’t necessary—you feed them.”

“But we have only five loaves of bread and two fish!” they answered.

“Bring them here,” he said. Then he told the people to sit down on the grass. Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward heaven, and blessed them. Then, breaking the loaves into pieces, he gave the bread to the disciples, who distributed it to the people. They all ate as much as they wanted, and afterward, the disciples picked up twelve baskets of leftovers. About 5,000 men were fed that day, in addition to all the women and children!

Morning Reflection:

But Jesus said, “That isn’t necessary—you feed them.”
– Matthew 14:16 –

Jesus’ feeding of the five thousand reminds us of our personal inadequacies and His all-sufficiency of resources to meet the needs at hand. And sometimes it takes a miraculous intervention to fulfill God’s will and purpose for us.

In context, this sign was significant to three groups –

+ the disciples – confidence in Jesus’ ability to supply all their needs.
+ the believing remnant – confirmation of their faith in Jesus Messiah.
+ the unbelieving crowds – continued rejection of Jesus in spite of his mighty works.

Questions for consideration:

What do you think was Jesus’ primary mission – to feed the physically hungry, the spiritually hungry, or both? Please explain.
Do you think it is easier to feed the physically hungry, or the spiritually hungry? Please explain.
Can you think of an example when Jesus has met your needs in a miraculous way? Please explain.
Can you think of examples when people were physically fed by Christians, but remained unbelievers? Please explain.

Morning Prayer: For the Bread of Life.

Feed us now, Lord Jesus, as you fed your first disciples.

Feed us with that soul-food which nurtures enough love within us to outstrip the fears and enmity that ties the world up in knots.
Feed us with that spiritual bread which strengthens our hands for serving those broken and lost people whom this world deems a waste of space.
Feed us, so that we may be fulfilled with some of that joy which the universe cannot contain.

Heal and transform us now; we hunger and thirst for your abundant life.

We bring you our sorrow and ask for the bread of joy.
we bring you our despair and ask for the bread of hope.
we bring you our weariness and ask for the bread of inspiration.

Meet us here;we need the bread of heaven to sustain us as we journey to find our way, that we may we be one with you. In your name we pray. Amen.

Jesus Feeds Five Thousand

The apostles returned to Jesus from their ministry tour and told him all they had done and taught. Then Jesus said, “Let’s go off by ourselves to a quiet place and rest awhile.” He said this because there were so many people coming and going that Jesus and his apostles didn’t even have time to eat.

So they left by boat for a quiet place, where they could be alone. But many people recognized them and saw them leaving, and people from many towns ran ahead along the shore and got there ahead of them. Jesus saw the huge crowd as he stepped from the boat, and he had compassion on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.

Late in the afternoon his disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away so they can go to the nearby farms and villages and buy something to eat.”

But Jesus said, “You feed them.”

“With what?” they asked. “We’d have to work for months to earn enough money to buy food for all these people!”

“How much bread do you have?” he asked. “Go and find out.”

They came back and reported, “We have five loaves of bread and two fish.”

Then Jesus told the disciples to have the people sit down in groups on the green grass. So they sat down in groups of fifty or a hundred.

Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward heaven, and blessed them. Then, breaking the loaves into pieces, he kept giving the bread to the disciples so they could distribute it to the people. He also divided the fish for everyone to share. They all ate as much as they wanted, and afterward, the disciples picked up twelve baskets of leftover bread and fish. A total of 5,000 men and their families were fed.

Jesus Walks on Water

Immediately after this, Jesus insisted that his disciples get back into the boat and head across the lake to Bethsaida, while he sent the people home. After telling everyone good-bye, he went up into the hills by himself to pray.

Late that night, the disciples were in their boat in the middle of the lake, and Jesus was alone on land. He saw that they were in serious trouble, rowing hard and struggling against the wind and waves. About three o’clock in the morning Jesus came toward them, walking on the water. He intended to go past them, but when they saw him walking on the water, they cried out in terror, thinking he was a ghost. They were all terrified when they saw him.

But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage! I am here!” Then he climbed into the boat, and the wind stopped. They were totally amazed, for they still didn’t understand the significance of the miracle of the loaves. Their hearts were too hard to take it in.

After they had crossed the lake, they landed at Gennesaret. They brought the boat to shore and climbed out. The people recognized Jesus at once, and they ran throughout the whole area, carrying sick people on mats to wherever they heard he was. Wherever he went—in villages, cities, or the countryside—they brought the sick out to the marketplaces. They begged him to let the sick touch at least the fringe of his robe, and all who touched him were healed.

Morning Reflection:

disciples serve as waiters

Jesus said, “You feed them.” – Mark 6:37

The on-the-job training of the disciples continues in today’s reading – leading to a deeper understanding of who Jesus was and a deeper commitment to him.

Jesus is the ultimate provider of all our needs – teaching, healing and daily bread. In telling the disciples to feed the crowd, Jesus highlighted the inadequacy of their resources (physically and spiritually) to complete the task – the numbers didn’t work – too many people, not enough money, and not enough food; they were stymied. From a human perspective it was impossible, but not from God’s.

+ Jesus: By thanking God for the food and then providing it miraculously for the people, Jesus disclosed that he was not only the Son of Man but also the Son of God.

+ The disciples: Jesus served the people through the disciples who presented what he had provided to the multitudes. The disciples served as waiters. Servants can only serve what the master provides.

Questions for consideration:

Have you ever witnessed God do something that was impossible from a human perspective? Please explain.
Have you ever been asked to do something for God that was impossible from a human perspective? What happened? Please explain.
Where in your life right now are you being challenged to do something that is beyond your ability? In practical terms, what would it mean for you to rely on God to produce the desired outcome. Please explain.
In what way do you need to rely on resources that only God can provide, or multiply, to get you through he day? Please explain.

Morning Prayer:

Prayer for the practical needs of persecuted believers:

Heavenly Father, our provider and sustainer: Attend to the needs of your family suffering great hardship and persecution, especially –

+ That they would have access to a Bible…
+ That they would have the courage to remain in their homeland…
+ That those rejected by their family and friends would be welcomed into your family where they are loved and supported emotionally and physically…
+ That socially vulnerable women and those who have lost custody of their children would be protected and their children returned…
+ That those who are destitute would find jobs and safe places to live…

Heavenly Father, you know each one of your children by name: Have mercy on them and attend to their needs. I ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.

My Prayer:

Heavenly Father: You know our needs for teaching, healing, and daily bread – and you know our inadequacy to sustain ourselves. Work your wonders in our lives and give us what we need today – that we might grow in faith and love, and give generously to others what we have receive from you. I ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve Disciples

Luke 9 One day Jesus called together his twelve disciples and gave them power and authority to cast out all demons and to heal all diseases. 2 Then he sent them out to tell everyone about the Kingdom of God and to heal the sick. 3 “Take nothing for your journey,” he instructed them. “Don’t take a walking stick, a traveler’s bag, food, money, or even a change of clothes. 4 Wherever you go, stay in the same house until you leave town. 5 And if a town refuses to welcome you, shake its dust from your feet as you leave to show that you have abandoned those people to their fate.”

6 So they began their circuit of the villages, preaching the Good News and healing the sick.

Herod’s Confusion

7 When Herod Antipas, the ruler of Galilee, heard about everything Jesus was doing, he was puzzled. Some were saying that John the Baptist had been raised from the dead. 8 Others thought Jesus was Elijah or one of the other prophets risen from the dead.

9 “I beheaded John,” Herod said, “so who is this man about whom I hear such stories?” And he kept trying to see him.

20 Then he asked them, “But who do you say I am?”

Peter replied, “You are the Messiah sent from God!”

Jesus Predicts His Death

21 Jesus warned his disciples not to tell anyone who he was. 22 “The Son of Man must suffer many terrible things,” he said. “He will be rejected by the elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law. He will be killed, but on the third day he will be raised from the dead.”

23 Then he said to the crowd, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me. 24 If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. 25 And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but are yourself lost or destroyed? 26 If anyone is ashamed of me and my message, the Son of Man will be ashamed of that person when he returns in his glory and in the glory of the Father and the holy angels. 27 I tell you the truth, some standing here right now will not die before they see the Kingdom of God.”

28 About eight days later Jesus took Peter, John, and James up on a mountain to pray. 29 And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was transformed, and his clothes became dazzling white. 30 Suddenly, two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared and began talking with Jesus. 31 They were glorious to see. And they were speaking about his exodus from this world, which was about to be fulfilled in Jerusalem.

32 Peter and the others had fallen asleep. When they woke up, they saw Jesus’ glory and the two men standing with him. 33 As Moses and Elijah were starting to leave, Peter, not even knowing what he was saying, blurted out, “Master, it’s wonderful for us to be here! Let’s make three shelters as memorials—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 34 But even as he was saying this, a cloud overshadowed them, and terror gripped them as the cloud covered them.

35 Then a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, my Chosen One. Listen to him.” 36 When the voice finished, Jesus was there alone. They didn’t tell anyone at that time what they had seen.

Prayer to be Faithful in Serving God

Father in Heaven, ever-living source of all that is good, keep me faithful in serving You.

Help me to drink of Christ’s Truth, and fill my heart with His Love so that I may serve You in faith and love until I reach eternal life. In the Sacrament of the Eucharist You give me the joy of sharing Your Life now. Keep me in Your presence. Let me never be separated from You and help me to do Your Will.

In Jesus’ name, I ask it. Amen.

Since the beginning of time, God has always nourished his people. Today we remember God’s kindness in giving us the Body and Blood of Christ as our spiritual food.

Opening Prayer:

You have blessed all generations, O God most high, in Jesus, our compassionate Savior, for through him you invite us to your kingdom, welcome us to your table, and provide us with nourishment in abundance. Teach us to imitate your unfailing kindness and to build up Christ’s body, the Church, by generously handing on to others the gifts we have received from your bounty. Great and powerful God: help us in our time of need.
