After Pentecost | Thursday 28 May 2026
+ In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen
Opening prayer:
Almighty God,
through the outpouring of the Holy Spirit,
you revealed the way of eternal life to every race and nation:
Pour out this gift anew,
that by the preaching of the Gospel
your salvation may reach to the ends of the earth;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God,
for ever and ever. Amen.
“So never be ashamed to tell others about our Lord.”
(2 Timothy 1:8)

The Lord Challenges Job
38:1 Then the Lord answered Job from the whirlwind:
+ “Who is this that questions my wisdom
with such ignorant words?
+ Brace yourself like a man,
because I have some questions for you,
and you must answer them.
38:4 “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?
Tell me, if you know so much.
+ Who determined its dimensions
and stretched out the surveying line?
+ What supports its foundations,
and who laid its cornerstone
+ as the morning stars sang together
and all the angels shouted for joy?
38:8 “Who kept the sea inside its boundaries
as it burst from the womb,
+ and as I clothed it with clouds
and wrapped it in thick darkness?
+ For I locked it behind barred gates,
limiting its shores.
+ I said, ‘This far and no farther will you come.
Here your proud waves must stop!’

NT Reading: 2 Timothy 1:8-12a (NLT)
1:8 So never be ashamed to tell others about our Lord. And don’t be ashamed of me, either, even though I’m in prison for him. With the strength God gives you, be ready to suffer with me for the sake of the Good News. For God saved us and called us to live a holy life. He did this, not because we deserved it, but because that was his plan from before the beginning of time—to show us his grace through Christ Jesus. And now he has made all of this plain to us by the appearing of Christ Jesus, our Savior. He broke the power of death and illuminated the way to life and immortality through the Good News. And God chose me to be a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher of this Good News.
1:12 That is why I am suffering here in prison. But I am not ashamed of it, for I know the one in whom I trust, and I am sure that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until the day of his return.

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
O God, without whose beauty and goodness our souls are unfed, without whose truth our reason withers: Consecrate our lives to your will, giving us such purity of heart, such depth of faith, and such steadfastness of purpose, that in time we may come to think your own thoughts after you; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.
O God, our heavenly Father: Pour out your Spirit on your Church, that we may fulfill Christ’s command to preach the Gospel to all people. Send forth laborers into your harvest; defend them in all dangers and temptations; and hasten the time when the fullness of the Gentiles shall be gathered in, and faithful Israel shall be saved; through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
