“Psalm 113”

1 Praise the LORD.

Sing praises, you servants of the LORD; *
O praise the Name of the LORD.
2 Blessed be the Name of the LORD, *
from this time forth for evermore.
3 The LORD’s Name be praised *
from the rising up of the sun to the going down of the same.
4 The LORD is high above all nations, *
and his glory above the heavens.

5 Who is like the LORD our God, who has his dwelling so high, *
and yet humbles himself to behold the things that are in heaven and earth?
6 He takes up the lowly out of the dust, *
and lifts the poor out of the ashes,
7 That he may set them with the princes, *
even with the princes of his people.
8 He gives the barren woman a home to dwell in, *
and makes her to be a joyful mother of children.

Praise the LORD.

Proverbs (11)  (The Wisdom of Solomon)

5 The godly are directed by honesty;
the wicked fall beneath their load of sin.

7 When the wicked die, their hopes die with them,
for they rely on their own feeble strength.

21 Evil people will surely be punished,
but the children of the godly will go free.

__________

Consider:

“Who is like the LORD our God, who has his dwelling so high,
and yet humbles himself to behold the things that are in heaven and earth?”
(Psalm 113:5)

Only in Jesus is the Godhead seen, but he unhesitatingly declared “he that hath seen me hath seen the Father.”

“Who dwelleth on high.” In the height of his abode none can be like him. His throne, his whole character, his person, his being, everything about him, is lofty, and infinitely majestic, so that none can be likened unto him. His serene mind abides in the most elevated condition, he is never dishonored, nor does he stoop from the pure holiness and absolute perfection of his character. His saints are said to dwell on high, and in this they are the reflection of his glory; but as for himself, the height of his dwelling place surpasses thought, and he rises far above the most exalted of his glorified people.

____

Heathen philosophers could not believe that the great God was observant of the small events of human history; they pictured him as abiding in serene indifference to all the wants and woes of his creatures. “Our Rock is not as their rock;” we have a God who is high above all gods, and yet who is our Father, knowing what we have need of before we ask him; our Shepherd, who supplies our needs; our Guardian, who counts the hairs of our heads; our tender and considerate Friend, who sympathizes in all our griefs. Truly the name of our condescending God should be praised wherever it is known.

__ Spurgeon

Q: What comes to mind when you think of God enthroned above the heavens?

Q: What comes to mind when you think of the majesty and holiness of God?

Q: What comes to mind when you think of the humility of Jesus?

He became like us, so that we could become like him.

Q What did he give up in order to become like us?

Prayer

+ I am no longer my own, but thine. Put me to what thou wilt, rank me with whom thou wilt. Put me to doing, put me to suffering. Let me be employed by thee or laid aside for thee, exalted for thee or brought low for thee. Let me be full, let me be empty. Let me have all things, let me have nothing. I freely and heartily yield all things to thy pleasure and disposal. And now, O glorious and blessed God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, thou art mine, and I am thine. So be it. And the covenant which I have made on earth, let it be ratified in heaven. Amen. (John Wesley)

“Psalm 112”

1 Praise the LORD!

Blessed is the one who fears the LORD, *
who has great delight in his commandments.
2 His seed shall be mighty in the land; *
the generation of the faithful shall be blessed.
3 Riches and plenteousness shall be in his house, *
and his righteousness shall endure for ever.
4 For the upright, there rises light in the darkness; *
he is merciful, loving, and righteous.
5 It is good for him to be generous in lending *
and to guide his words with discretion.
6 For he shall never be moved, *
and the righteous shall be kept in everlasting remembrance.
7 He will not be afraid of any evil tidings, *
for his heart is steadfast and trusts in the LORD.
8 His heart is established, and will not fear; *
at the last he shall see his desire upon his enemies.
9 He has given freely to the poor, *
and his righteousness endures for ever; his horn shall be exalted with honor.
10 The ungodly shall see it, and shall be angry; *
he shall gnash his teeth, and waste away; the desire of the ungodly shall perish.

Proverbs (10)  (The Wisdom of Solomon)

25 When the storms of life come, the wicked are whirled away,
but the godly have a lasting foundation.

27 Fear of the Lord lengthens one’s life,
but the years of the wicked are cut short.

__________

Consider:

“Blessed is the one who fears the LORD….
For he shall never be moved…. He will not be afraid of any evil tidings,
for his heart is steadfast and trusts in the LORD.
(Psalm 112:1,6-7)

God is here praised for the manifestation of his glory which is seen in his people, just as in the preceding psalm he was magnified for his own personal acts. The hundred and eleventh speaks of the great Father, and this describes his children renewed after his image. The psalm cannot be viewed as the extolling of man, for it begins with “Praise ye the Lord;” and it is intended to give to God all the honor of his grace which is manifested in the sons of God.

He shall never be moved

God has rooted and established him so that neither men nor devils shall sweep him from his place.

    • His prosperity shall be permanent, and not like that of the gambler and the cheat, whose gains are evanescent….
    • His reputation shall be bright and lustrous from year to year, for it is not a mere pretense….
    • His home shall be permanent, and he shall not need to wander from place to place as a bird that wanders from her nest…
    • His memory shall be abiding, for a good man is not soon forgotten, and “the righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance.”

None of us likes the idea of being forgotten, and yet the only way to avoid it is to be righteous before God.

He shall not be afraid of bad news

Rumors and reports he despises; prophecies of evil, vented by fanatical mouths, he ridicules; actual and verified information of loss and distress he bears with equanimity, resigning everything into the hands of God.

He is neither fickle nor cowardly; when he is undecided as to his course he is still fixed in heart: he may change his plan, but not the purpose of his soul. His heart being fixed in solid reliance upon God, a change in his circumstances but slightly affects him; faith has made him firm and steadfast, and therefore if the worst should come to the worst, he would remain quiet and patient, waiting for the salvation of God.

__ Spurgeon

Q: How have you handled bad news? Has it shaken your trust in God?

Q: What do you know about God that gives strengthens your resolve to trust him?

Q: Are you willing to submit yourself to God’s will, regardless of the news?

__________

Prayer

+ For Trust: Most loving Father, you will us to give thanks for all things, to dread nothing but the loss of you, and to cast all our care on the One who cares for us. Preserve us from faithless fears and worldly anxieties, and grant that no clouds of this mortal life may hide from us the light of that love which is immortal, and which you have manifested unto us in your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

+ For Quiet Confidence: O God of peace, who hast taught us that in returning and rest we shall be saved, in quietness and in confidence shall be our strength: By the might of thy Spirit lift us, we pray thee, to thy presence, where we may be still and know that thou art God; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

+ For Submission to God’s Will: O Holy Spirit, beloved of my soul, I adore you. Enlighten me, guide me, strengthen me, console me. Tell me what I should do; give me your orders. I promise to submit myself to all that you desire of me and to accept all that you permit to happen to me. Let me only know your will. Amen.

+ For the Coming of God’s  Kingdom: Hasten, O Father, the coming of your kingdom; and grant that we your servants, who now live by faith, may with joy behold your Son at his coming in glorious majesty; even Jesus Christ, our only Mediator and Advocate. Amen.

1 Praise the LORD.

I will give thanks unto the LORD with my whole heart, *
in the company of the upright, and among the congregation.
2 The works of the LORD are great, *
sought out by all who have pleasure in them.
3 His work is worthy to be praised and held in honor, *
and his righteousness endures for ever.
4 He has made his marvelous works to be had in remembrance; *
The LORD is gracious and merciful.
5 He has given food to those who fear him; *
he shall ever be mindful of his covenant.
6 He has shown his people the power of his works, *
that he may give them the heritage of the nations.
7 The works of his hands are faithfulness and justice; *
all his commandments are true.
8 They stand fast for ever and ever, *
and are done in truth and equity.
9 He sent redemption to his people; he has commanded his covenant for ever; *
holy and awesome is his Name.

10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; *
a good understanding have all those who live accordingly; his praise endures for ever.

Proverbs (09)  (The Wisdom of Solomon)

10 Fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom.
Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment.

11 Wisdom will multiply your days
and add years to your life.
12 If you become wise, you will be the one to benefit.
If you scorn wisdom, you will be the one to suffer.

__________

Consider:

“Praise the LORD.
I will give thanks unto the LORD with my whole heart,
in the company of the upright, and among the congregation.”
(Psalm 111:1)

Praise the LORD wholeheartedly!

With undivided affections; holding back nothing. I will allow nothing to be in my heart that would interfere with the fullness of praise; no coldness or dividedness of affection; no love for other things that would deaden my love for God; no suspicion respecting him that would chill my ardor; no unbelief that would drag me down to earth, while the language of my lips ascended to God.

__ Barnes

The works of the LORD are great.

They are like himself; there is nothing in them that is mean or trifling. They are the products of infinite wisdom and power… They astonish and strike us with awe the moment we behold them. Every one of them, whether in the natural or spiritual system, is marvelous.

  • They are pleasurable; delighting all who love him….
  • They are just and holy; displaying his righteousness….
  • They are memorable; refocusing our attention on him….
  • They are gracious and full of compassion; pardoning our sin…
  • They are covenantal; promises made / promises kept….
  • They are good; worthy of endless praise….

__ Matthew Henry

Wholehearted praise and reverence for God leads to sound judgement and wise living; and, sound judgement and wise living lead to long life.

Q: What prevents you from giving the LORD your  whole-hearted praise?

Q: When you think of the LORD’s marvelous works, what comes to mind?

Q: Which of these give you pleasure the more you think about them?

(Psalm 107) – Rachel Cohen

The New Cloverdale Psalter (2019 Update of 1535 Original

“Psalm 107”

1 O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is gracious, *
and his mercy endures for ever.
2 Let those whom the LORD has redeemed give thanks, *
whom he has delivered from the hand of the enemy,
3 And gathered them out of the lands, from the east and from the west, *
from the north and from the south.

4 They went astray in the wilderness, even in the desert, *
and found no city to dwell in;
5 They were hungry and thirsty, *
and their soul fainted within them.
6 Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, *
and he delivered them from their distress.
7 He led them forth by a straight path *
until they came to a city where they might dwell.
8 Oh, that they would therefore praise the LORD for his goodness *
and declare the wonders that he does for the children of men!
9 For he satisfies the empty soul *
and fills the hungry soul with goodness.

10 Some sat in darkness, and in the shadow of death, *
being bound fast in misery and iron,
11 Because they rebelled against the words of God *
and lightly regarded the counsel of the Most High.
12 He also brought down their heart with heaviness; *
they fell down, and there was none to help them.
13 Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, *
and he delivered them out of their distress.
14 For he brought them out of darkness, and out of the shadow of death, *
and broke their bonds asunder.
15 Oh, that they would therefore praise the LORD for his goodness *
and declare the wonders that he does for the children of men!
16 For he has broken the gates of brass *
and shattered the bars of iron asunder.

17 The foolish were plagued for their offense *
and because of their wickedness.
18 Their soul abhorred all manner of food, *
and they were even close to death’s door.
19 So when they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, *
he delivered them out of their distress.
20 He sent his word and healed them, *
and they were saved from destruction.
21 Oh, that they would therefore praise the LORD for his goodness *
and declare the wonders that he does for the children of men!
22 That they would offer unto him the sacrifice of thanksgiving *
and tell of his works with gladness!

23 Those who go down to the sea in ships, *
who carry out their business in great waters,
24 They behold the works of the LORD *
and his wonders in the deep.
25 For at his word the stormy wind arises, *
which lifts up the waves.
26 They are carried up to heaven and down again to the deep; *
their soul melts away because of the trouble.
27 They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, *
and are at their wits’ end.
28 So when they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, *
he delivers them out of their distress.
29 For he makes the storm to cease, *
so that the waves are still.
30 Then they are glad, because they are at rest, *
and so he brings them into the haven where they desire to be.
31 Oh, that they would therefore praise the LORD for his goodness *
and declare the wonders that he does for the children of men!
32 That they would exalt him also in the congregation of the people *
and praise him in the seat of the elders!

33 He turns rivers into a wilderness *
and water-springs into thirsty ground,
34 A fruitful land he makes barren, *
because of the wickedness of those who dwell there.
35 Again, he makes the wilderness into pools of water *
and dry ground into water-springs;
36 And there he sets the hungry *
that they may build a city to dwell in,
37 That they may sow their land and plant vineyards *
to yield the fruits of increase.
38 He blesses them, so that they multiply exceedingly, *
and does not allow their cattle to decrease.

39 And again, when they are diminished and brought low, *
through oppression, through any plague or trouble,
40 Though he pours contempt on princes *
and lets them wander in the pathless wilderness,
41 Yet he helps the poor out of misery *
and increases their households like a flock of sheep.
42 The righteous will consider this and rejoice, *
and the mouth of all wickedness shall be stopped.
43 Whoever is wise will ponder these things, *
and shall understand the loving-kindness of the LORD.

House Of The Rising Sun – Joan Baez (1960)

There is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
It has been the ruin of many a poor girl
And me, oh, God, I’m one

If I had listened to what my mother said,
I`d have been at home today,
But I was young and foolish, oh, God
Let a rambler lead me astray

Go tell my baby sisters
Don’t do what I have done
To shun that house in New Orleans
They call the rising sun

I’m going back to New Orleans
My race is almost run
I’m going back to spend my life
Beneath that rising sun

Consider:

“O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is gracious,
and his mercy endures for ever.

Let those whom the LORD has redeemed give thanks,
whom he has delivered from the hand of the enemy.”
(Psalm 107:1-2)

Give thanks for God is good!

  • The LORD is good by nature, and essence, and proven to be good in all the acts of his eternity. Compared with him there is none good, no, not one: but he is essentially, perpetually, superlatively, infinitely good. We are the perpetual recipients of his goodness, and therefore ought above all his creatures to magnify his name.
  • The LORD’s mercy had no beginning, and shall never know an end. Our sin required that goodness should display itself to us in the form of mercy, and it has done so, and will do so evermore.

__ Spurgeon

Let the redeemed give thanks!

  • Christ is the author of our redemption; we are redeemed, not by ourselves, nor by any creature, but by the Lord….
  • Christ has redeemed us from the hand of the enemy; i.e. from all our sins which war against our souls; from Satan our implacable adversary, who is stronger than us; from the law, which curses and threatens us with damnation and death; from death itself, the last enemy, and indeed from the hand of all our enemies, be they who they may.

__ John Gill

Satan is the enemy of the Redeemed.

Prayer

+ Good and Merciful God: Look with pity on the sorrows of your servants. Remember them, O Lord, in mercy; nourish their souls with patience; comfort them with an awareness of your goodness; lift up your countenance upon them; and give them peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

+ Good and Merciful God: Let your fatherly goodness be upon all whom you have made. Remember in pity all those who are this day destitute, homeless, elderly, infirm, forgotten, or poor. Though they be troubled on every side, shield them from distress; though they are perplexed, save them from despair. Grant this, O Lord, for the love of him who for our sakes became poor, your Son our Savior Jesus Christ.

+ Good and Merciful God: Look with compassion upon those who through addiction have lost their health and freedom. Restore to them the assurance of your unfailing mercy; remove from them the fears that beset them; strengthen them in the work of their recovery; and to those who minister to them, give patient understanding and persevering love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

+ Good and Merciful God: Have mercy on the unrepentant and those who do not believe. Awaken in them, by your Word and Holy Spirit, a deep sense of their sinfulness and peril. Take from them all ignorance, hardness of heart, and contempt of your Word. Grant them to know and feel that there is no other Name under heaven given among men by which they must be saved, but only the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ. And so bring them home and number them among your children, that they may be yours for ever; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.

+ Good and Merciful God: Hasten the coming of your kingdom; and grant that we your servants, who now live by faith, may with joy behold your Son at his coming in glorious majesty; even Jesus Christ, our only Mediator and Advocate. Amen.

O visit me with your salvation,
5 That I may see the felicity of your chosen, *
and rejoice in the gladness of your people, and give thanks with your inheritance.

6 We have sinned like our fathers; *
we have done wrong and dealt wickedly.
7 Our fathers regarded not your wonders in Egypt, neither did they keep your great goodness in
remembrance, *
but were disobedient at the sea, even at the Red Sea.
8 Nevertheless, he saved them for his Name’s sake, *
that he might make his power known.
9 He rebuked the Red Sea, and it was dried up; *
so he led them through the deep as through a wilderness.
10 And he saved them from the adversary’s hand, *
and delivered them from the hand of the enemy.
11 As for those who troubled them, the waters overwhelmed them;*
there was not one of them left.
12 Then they believed his words *
and sang praises unto him.

13 But soon they forgot his works *
and would not wait for his counsel.
14 A craving came upon them in the wilderness, *
and they tempted God in the desert.
15 So he gave them their desire, *
and sent leanness into their soul.
16 They were envious of Moses also in the camp, *
and of Aaron the holy one of the LORD.
17 So the earth opened and swallowed up Dathan *
and covered the company of Abiram,
18 And fire was kindled in their company; *
the flame burnt up the ungodly.

19 They made a calf in Horeb *
and worshiped a molten image.
20 Thus they exchanged their glory *
for the image of a calf that feeds on hay.
21 And they forgot God their Savior, *
who had done great things in Egypt,
22 Wondrous works in the land of Ham, *
and fearful things by the Red Sea.
23 So he said he would have destroyed them, had not Moses his chosen stood before him in the gap *
to turn away his wrathful indignation, lest he should destroy them.

24 Then they scorned that pleasant land *
and gave no credence to his word,
25 But murmured in their tents *
and did not hearken to the voice of the LORD.
26 Then he lifted up his hand against them *
to overthrow them in the wilderness,
27 To cast out their seed among the nations, *
and to scatter them in all the lands.

28 They joined themselves to Baal-Peor *
and ate the offerings to the dead.
29 Thus they provoked him to anger with their wanton deeds, *
and the plague broke out among them.
30 Then Phineas stood up and interceded, *
and so the plague was ended;
31 And that was counted to him as righteousness *
among all generations for evermore.

32 They angered him also at the waters of strife, *
so that he punished Moses for their misdeeds;
33 For they provoked him to anger, *
so that he spoke rashly with his lips.

34 Neither did they destroy the peoples *
as the LORD commanded them,
35 But intermingled among the nations *
and learned their heathen ways,
36 So that they worshiped their idols, which became a snare to them; *
they offered their sons and their daughters to demons,
37 And shed innocent blood, even the blood of their sons and of their daughters, *
whom they offered to the idols of Canaan; and the land was defiled with blood.
38 Thus were they defiled by their own works *
and went whoring with their own deeds.

39 Therefore was the wrath of the LORD kindled against his people, *
and he abhorred his own inheritance,
40 And he gave them over into the hands of the nations, *
and those who hated them were lords over them.
41 Their enemies oppressed them *
and held them in subjection.
42 Many a time did he deliver them, *
but they rebelled against him through their own devices, and were brought down in their wickedness.
43 Nevertheless, when he saw their adversity, *
when he heard their lamentation,
44 He remembered his covenant and pitied them, according to the multitude of his mercies; *
he made all those who led them away captive to pity them.

45 Deliver us, O LORD our God, and gather us from among the nations, *
that we may give thanks to your holy Name and make our boast of your praise.

46 Blessed be the LORD God of Israel from everlasting and world without end, *
and let all the people say, “Amen.” Praise the LORD.

Consider:

Remember me, O LORD, according to the favor that you show to your people;
O visit me with your salvation…. We have sinned like our fathers;
we have done wrong and dealt wickedly.

(Psalm 106:4-6)

Remember me and save me

  • Think of me with kindness, even as you think of your own elect. I cannot ask more, nor would I seek less. Treat me as the least of your saints are treated and I am content. It should be enough for us if we fare as the rest of the family.
  • This feeling would prevent our wishing to escape trial, persecution, and chastisement; these have fallen to the lot of saints, and why should we escape them?
  • If the Lord smiled upon their souls we cannot rest unless he smiles upon us also. We would dwell where they dwell, rejoice as they rejoice, sorrow as they sorrow, and in all things be for ever one with them in the favor of the Lord.

__ Spurgeon

We have sinned and done wrong

  • “We have sinned with our fathers.” Here begins a long and particular confession. Confession of sin is the readiest way to secure an answer to the prayer of verse 4; God visits with his salvation the soul which acknowledges its need of a Savior.

__ Spurgeon

_____

  • “Sinned; committed iniquity; done wickedly.” The Rabbis tell us that there are three kinds and degrees of sin here set down in an ascending scale; against one’s self, against one’s neighbor, against God; sins of ignorance, sins of conscious deliberation, sins of pride and wickedness.

__ Rabbi Levi and Genebrardus

Confession of our sins leads to the recognition of our need for a Savior.

Q: How have you sinned against yourself?

Q: How have you sinned against your neighbor?

Q: How have you sinned against God?

Q: How have you sinned out of ignorance?

Q: How have you sinned deliberately?

Q: How have you sinned through wrongful pride?

Proverbs (06)  (Lessons for Daily Life)

12 What are worthless and wicked people like?
They are constant liars,
13 signaling their deceit with a wink of the eye,
a nudge of the foot, or the wiggle of fingers.
14 Their perverted hearts plot evil,
and they constantly stir up trouble.
15 But they will be destroyed suddenly,
broken in an instant beyond all hope of healing.

LORD, have mercy!
+ We have slaughtered innocent children on the evil altar of abortion, instead of choosing life….

LORD, have mercy!

Gracious and Merciful God: Restrain your righteous anger and bring us to our knees in repentance; that we might turn to you and be saved – through faith in your Son Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God forever. Amen.
