“Psalm 125”

1 Those who put their trust in the LORD shall be like Mount Zion, *
which cannot be moved, but stands fast for ever.
2 The hills stand about Jerusalem *
even as the LORD stands round about his people, from this time forth for evermore.
3 For the scepter of the ungodly shall not rest upon the land allotted to the righteous, *
lest the righteous put forth their hand to do wickedness.
4 Do good, O LORD, unto those who are good, *
unto those who are good and true of heart.
5 As for those who turn aside to their own wicked ways, the LORD shall lead them away with the evildoers; *
but peace shall be upon Israel.

Proverbs 18

10 The name of the Lord is a strong fortress;
the godly run to him and are safe.

Consider:

“Those who put their trust in the LORD shall be like Mount Zion,
which cannot be moved, but stands fast for ever.”

(Psalm 125:1)

Trust in the LORD & stand fast!

Those who trust in the LORD shall be as fixed, firm, and stable as the mount where David dwelt, and where the ark abode. To move mount Zion was impossible…. Zion was the image of eternal steadfastness….

  • Those who trust in the LORD enjoy peacefulness and quietude – for their hope is sure.
  • Those who trust in the LORD enjoy a confidence they can never be ashamed.

This is, and is to be our portion; we are, we have been, we shall be as steadfast as the hill of God. Zion cannot be removed, and does not remove; so the people of God can neither be moved passively nor actively, by force from without or fickleness from within.

Faith in God is a settling and establishing virtue; he who by his strength sets fast the mountains, by that same power stays the hearts of them that trust in him. This steadfastness will endure “for ever,” and we may be assured therefore that no believer shall perish either in life or in death, in time or in eternity.

We trust in an eternal God, and our safety shall be eternal.

__ Spurgeon

Prayer:

+ For Trust in the LORD

Most loving Father, you will us to give thanks for all things, to dread nothing but the loss of you, and to cast all our care on the One who cares for us. Preserve us from faithless fears and worldly anxieties, and grant that no clouds of this mortal life may hide from us the light of that love which is immortal, and which you have manifested unto us in your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

+ For Quiet Confidence

O God of peace, who has taught us that in returning and rest we shall be saved, in quietness and in confidence shall be our strength: By the might of thy Spirit lift us, we pray to your presence, where we may be still and know that you are God; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

+ For Jerusalem

    • Hope— for God’s Holy Spirit to remove bitterness and complacency from the hearts of Jerusalem’s people; for them to believe that peace is actually possible in their city.
    • Security— for Christ to spread his powerful protection around this place, preventing even the empty threat of attack from outside enemies.
    • Harmony— for God to turn the hearts of people toward compassion and kindness; for children to lead the way in the rising up of a generation that longs to treat all in Jerusalem as brother and sister.
    • Family— for Jesus to knit families together in wholeness and health, in ways that repulse fear and hate in exchange for love and joy.
    • Economy— for the people of Jerusalem to have ample opportunity and ability to provide for themselves and their families, to give generously to others, and to no longer be divided over who “has” and who “has not.”
    • Worship— for Christ’s Holy Spirit to be not simply present, but undeniably known in obvious ways within the hearts and expressions of His truly beloved people—Jew and Arab alike.

“Psalm 113”

1 Praise the LORD.

Sing praises, you servants of the LORD; *
O praise the Name of the LORD.
2 Blessed be the Name of the LORD, *
from this time forth for evermore.
3 The LORD’s Name be praised *
from the rising up of the sun to the going down of the same.
4 The LORD is high above all nations, *
and his glory above the heavens.

5 Who is like the LORD our God, who has his dwelling so high, *
and yet humbles himself to behold the things that are in heaven and earth?
6 He takes up the lowly out of the dust, *
and lifts the poor out of the ashes,
7 That he may set them with the princes, *
even with the princes of his people.
8 He gives the barren woman a home to dwell in, *
and makes her to be a joyful mother of children.

Praise the LORD.

Proverbs (11)  (The Wisdom of Solomon)

5 The godly are directed by honesty;
the wicked fall beneath their load of sin.

7 When the wicked die, their hopes die with them,
for they rely on their own feeble strength.

21 Evil people will surely be punished,
but the children of the godly will go free.

__________

Consider:

“Who is like the LORD our God, who has his dwelling so high,
and yet humbles himself to behold the things that are in heaven and earth?”
(Psalm 113:5)

Only in Jesus is the Godhead seen, but he unhesitatingly declared “he that hath seen me hath seen the Father.”

“Who dwelleth on high.” In the height of his abode none can be like him. His throne, his whole character, his person, his being, everything about him, is lofty, and infinitely majestic, so that none can be likened unto him. His serene mind abides in the most elevated condition, he is never dishonored, nor does he stoop from the pure holiness and absolute perfection of his character. His saints are said to dwell on high, and in this they are the reflection of his glory; but as for himself, the height of his dwelling place surpasses thought, and he rises far above the most exalted of his glorified people.

____

Heathen philosophers could not believe that the great God was observant of the small events of human history; they pictured him as abiding in serene indifference to all the wants and woes of his creatures. “Our Rock is not as their rock;” we have a God who is high above all gods, and yet who is our Father, knowing what we have need of before we ask him; our Shepherd, who supplies our needs; our Guardian, who counts the hairs of our heads; our tender and considerate Friend, who sympathizes in all our griefs. Truly the name of our condescending God should be praised wherever it is known.

__ Spurgeon

Q: What comes to mind when you think of God enthroned above the heavens?

Q: What comes to mind when you think of the majesty and holiness of God?

Q: What comes to mind when you think of the humility of Jesus?

He became like us, so that we could become like him.

Q What did he give up in order to become like us?

Prayer

+ I am no longer my own, but thine. Put me to what thou wilt, rank me with whom thou wilt. Put me to doing, put me to suffering. Let me be employed by thee or laid aside for thee, exalted for thee or brought low for thee. Let me be full, let me be empty. Let me have all things, let me have nothing. I freely and heartily yield all things to thy pleasure and disposal. And now, O glorious and blessed God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, thou art mine, and I am thine. So be it. And the covenant which I have made on earth, let it be ratified in heaven. Amen. (John Wesley)
