Opening:

Almighty God, whose blessed Son
was led by the Spirit to be tempted by Satan:
Come quickly to help us
who are assaulted by many temptations,
and, as you know the weaknesses of each of us,
let each one find you mighty to save;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.

“Keep your conscience clear.
Then those who treat
the good Christian life you live with contempt
will feel ashamed
that they have ridiculed you.”

5:8 “But I would seek God’s help
and present my case to him.
He does great things that ⌞we⌟ cannot understand
and miracles that ⌞we⌟ cannot count.
He gives rain to the earth
and sends water to the fields.
He places lowly people up high.
He lifts those who mourn to safety.
He keeps shrewd people from carrying out their plans
so that they cannot do anything successfully.
He catches the wise with their own tricks.
The plans of schemers prove to be hasty.
In the daytime they meet darkness
and grope in the sunlight as if it were night.

“But he saves ⌞other people⌟ from their slander
and the needy from the power of the mighty.
Then the poor have hope
while wrongdoing shuts its mouth.

Blessing Comes When God Corrects You

8:17 “Blessed is the person whom God corrects.
That person should not despise discipline from the Almighty.
God injures, but he bandages.
He beats you up, but his hands make you well.
He will keep you safe from six troubles,
and when the seventh one comes, no harm will touch you:

“In famine he will save you from death,
and in war he will save you from the sword.

“When the tongue lashes out, you will be safe,
and you will not be afraid of destruction when it comes.

“You will be able to laugh at destruction and starvation,
so do not be afraid of wild animals on the earth.

“You will have a binding agreement with the stones in the field,
and wild animals will be at peace with you.

“You will know peace in your tent.
You will inspect your house and find nothing missing.

“You will find that your children are many
and your descendants are like the grass of the earth.

“You will come to your grave at a ripe old age
like a stack of hay in the right season.

“We have studied all of this thoroughly! This is the way it is.

Dedicate Your Lives to Jesus

3:8 Finally, everyone must live in harmony, be sympathetic, love each other, have compassion, and be humble. Don’t pay people back with evil for the evil they do to you, or ridicule those who ridicule you. Instead, bless them, because you were called to inherit a blessing.

“People who want to live a full life and enjoy good days
must keep their tongues from saying evil things,
and their lips from speaking deceitful things.
They must turn away from evil and do good.
They must seek peace and pursue it.
The Lord’s eyes are on those who do what he approves.
His ears hear their prayer.
The Lord confronts those who do evil.”

Who will harm you if you are devoted to doing what is good? But even if you suffer for doing what God approves, you are blessed. Don’t be afraid of those who want to harm you. Don’t get upset. But dedicate your lives to Christ as Lord. Always be ready to defend your confidence ⌞in God⌟ when anyone asks you to explain it. However, make your defense with gentleness and respect. Keep your conscience clear. Then those who treat the good Christian life you live with contempt will feel ashamed that they have ridiculed you. After all, if it is God’s will, it’s better to suffer for doing good than for doing wrong.

This is true because Christ suffered for our sins once.

The Sacrifice of Isaac

22 After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.” So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar. Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you.” And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. And he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So they went both of them together. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. So Abraham called the name of that place, “The Lord will provide”; as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”

And the angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven and said, “By myself I have sworn, declares the Lord, because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. 11 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the people of old received their commendation. By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.

These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. For people who speak thus make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return. But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.

By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was in the act of offering up his only son, of whom it was said, “Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.” He considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead, from which, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back.

Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake

Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing. For

“Whoever desires to love life
and see good days,
let him keep his tongue from evil
and his lips from speaking deceit;
let him turn away from evil and do good;
let him seek peace and pursue it.
For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,
and his ears are open to their prayer.
But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”

Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is good? But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you will be blessed. For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit,

Sovereign Lord, we dare approach your throne of grace, on behalf of these our brothers and sisters, in the name of Jesus Christ your Son our Savior. Amen
