Lent | Friday 08 April 2022: Psalm 31:9-16; Isaiah 54:9-10; Hebrews 2:10-18 ~ Jesus’ sacrifice takes away our sins.

Lent | Friday 08 April 2022

+ In the Name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Opening:

Almighty God, you alone can bring into order the unruly wills
and affections of sinners: Grant your people grace to love what
you command and desire what you promise; that, among the
swift and varied changes of this world, our hearts may surely
there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus
Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy
Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

It was necessary for [Jesus]
to be made in every respect like us,
his brothers and sisters, so that he could be
our merciful and faithful High Priest before God.
Then he could offer a sacrifice
that would take away the sins of the people.
(Hebrews 2:17)

Psalms: Psalm 31 – You Are My Strength
My Soul Among Lions

1. In You, Lord, I’ve taken refuge
Let me never be ashamed
In Your righteousness deliver
Hear as I beseech Your name
Be to me a rock of shelter
Where to run and safely hide
When the wicked’s nets entangle
Pull me out and be my guide

2. In You, Lord, I’ve taken refuge
Why must life be spent in tears?
Bones are weak and body’s wasted
Through the groans of bitter years
I’m a joke to them who hate You
I’m the horror of my friends
Some have even schemed and whispered
How to bring about my end

Pre-Chorus
But, You are my strength
I trust to You my very soul
You are my strength
My life is under Your control

Chorus
Save me, O God
In Your mercy be near
Save me, O God
For it’s You that I fear
Save me, O God
Who will ever be true
I put my trust in You

3. In You, Lord, I’ve taken refuge
For the sake of Your own name
Shine the light of favor on me
But the wicked put to shame
I hate all their filthy idols
And their tongues parading lies
Let them make their beds in sorrow
As for me, though, hear my cries

OT Reading: Isaiah 54:9-10 (NLT)

54:9 “Just as I swore in the time of Noah
that I would never again let a flood cover the earth,
so now I swear
that I will never again be angry and punish you.
For the mountains may move
and the hills disappear,
but even then my faithful love for you will remain.
My covenant of blessing will never be broken,”
says the Lord, who has mercy on you.

NT Reading: Hebrews 2:10-18 (NLT)

2:10 God, for whom and through whom everything was made, chose to bring many children into glory. And it was only right that he should make Jesus, through his suffering, a perfect leader, fit to bring them into their salvation.

So now Jesus and the ones he makes holy have the same Father. That is why Jesus is not ashamed to call them his brothers and sisters. For he said to God,

“I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters.
I will praise you among your assembled people.”

He also said,

“I will put my trust in him,”
that is, “I and the children God has given me.”

Because God’s children are human beings—made of flesh and blood—the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who had the power of death. Only in this way could he set free all who have lived their lives as slaves to the fear of dying.

We also know that the Son did not come to help angels; he came to help the descendants of Abraham. Therefore, it was necessary for him to be made in every respect like us, his brothers and sisters, so that he could be our merciful and faithful High Priest before God. Then he could offer a sacrifice that would take away the sins of the people. Since he himself has gone through suffering and testing, he is able to help us when we are being tested.

Prayer: ACNA | BCP2019

+ Almighty God, whose most dear Son went not up to joy but first he suffered pain, and entered not into glory before he was crucified: Mercifully grant that we, walking in the way of the Cross, may find it none other than the way of life and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

+ O God, by whom the meek are guided in judgment, and light rises up in darkness for the godly: Grant us, in all our doubts and uncertainties, the grace to ask what you would have us  do, that the Spirit of wisdom may save us from all false choices; that in your light we may see light, and in your straight path we may not stumble; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Closing:

Cover us with your blood,
Lord Jesus,
on our journey home.
