Morning Prayer: 09 Dec – Matthew 18:12-14 ~ he comes to save us

+ In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen

Opening prayer:

God, come to my assistance; Lord, make haste to help me.

One thing I have asked of the Lord, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life; to behold the beauty of the Lord and to seek Him in His temple.

In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a village in Galilee, to a virgin named Mary. She was engaged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of King David. Gabriel appeared to her and said, “Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you!”

Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to think what the angel could mean. “Don’t be afraid, Mary,” the angel told her, “for you have found favor with God! You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. And he will reign over Israel forever; his Kingdom will never end!”

Mary asked the angel, “But how can this happen? I am a virgin.”

The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the baby to be born will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God. What’s more, your relative Elizabeth has become pregnant in her old age! People used to say she was barren, but she has conceived a son and is now in her sixth month. 37 For the word of God will never fail.”

Mary responded, “I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.” And then the angel left her.

And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment….”

Reflection: “With Understanding”

This month we will be reading slowly through Psalm 119, the longest psalm, which gives thanks for God’s laws which give understanding and bring life. We pray God will teach us to obey Him, to honour Him, and to praise Him with understanding.

In John Irving’s novel The Cider House Rules the rules are carefully posted up where everyone can see them, but it makes no difference because the people who have to keep them cannot read. The rules still apply, and so do the penalties for breaking them. God’s laws are in-built in our world, so lack of understanding is dangerous….

The word of God challenges us, “Do you seek Him with all your mind?” And we respond, Amen. Lord have mercy!

Prayer: Heavenly Father – as I embark on this new season to discover Your Word to me through the Scriptures – give me Your Word for light, and Your Spirit for sight… that I might love You with all my heart and soul and mind… and keep my eyes focused on Jesus, my Savior and my Lord. Amen.

Reflection: “In The Present Moment” – Anne Morrow Lindbergh

Hurry is an unpleasant thing in itself, but also very unpleasant for whoever is around it. Some people came into my room and rushed in and rushed out and even when they were there they were not there – they were in the moment ahead or the moment behind. Some people who came in just for a moment were all there, completely in that moment.

Live from day-to-day, just from day-to-day. If you do so, you worry less and live more richly. If you let yourself be absorbed completely, if you surrender completely to the moments as they pass, you live more richly in those moments.

I do not think, it is lack of time that keeps me from doing things, it is that I do not want enough to do them.

Prayer: Michael and the angels

Holy Michael, archangel, defend us in the day of battle; be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. Reflection:

Help me to know that the secret of contentment lies in organizing the self in the direction of simplicity.
