Morning Prayer: Tue, 13 Sep – Psalm 113:3; 2 Kings 2:11-14; 2 Timothy 4:7-8 ~ finish your race

+ In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen!

Opening Sentence

One thing I have asked of the Lord, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life; to behold the beauty of the Lord and to seek Him in His temple.

Everywhere—from east to west—praise the name of the Lord.

Reading: 2 Kings 2:11-14 (NLT)

As they were walking along and talking, suddenly a chariot of fire appeared, drawn by horses of fire. It drove between the two men, separating them, and Elijah was carried by a whirlwind into heaven. Elisha saw it and cried out, “My father! My father! I see the chariots and charioteers of Israel!” And as they disappeared from sight, Elisha tore his clothes in distress.

Elisha picked up Elijah’s cloak, which had fallen when he was taken up. Then Elisha returned to the bank of the Jordan River. He struck the water with Elijah’s cloak and cried out, “Where is the Lord, the God of Elijah?” Then the river divided, and Elisha went across.

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful. And now the prize awaits me—the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on the day of his return. And the prize is not just for me but for all who eagerly look forward to his appearing.

Prayer

Then I heard a voice in heaven saying, ‘Whom shall I send? and who will go for us? Then said I, ‘Here I am; send me.’

+ Lord, see what evil the prince of this world is devising. Let the wind of Your Spirit blow and reverse the works of darkness: and Your fire will cover the earth.
+ Deliver me, Lord from every evil and grant me Your peace. In Your mercy, Lord, keep me free from sin.
+ I pray the protection of Christ to clothe me, Christ to enfold me, to surround me and guard me this day and every day.

Protect me from all anxiety as I wait in joyful hope for the coming of my Savior, Jesus Christ. Let Your Kingdom come, Lord, in me. Amen.

How great is the Lord, how deserving of praise, in the city of our God, which sits on his holy mountain!

It is high and magnificent; the whole earth rejoices to see it! Mount Zion, the holy mountain, is the city of the great King! God himself is in Jerusalem’s towers, revealing himself as its defender.

Then Haggai, the Lord’s messenger, gave the people this message from the Lord: “I am with you, says the Lord!”

So the Lord sparked the enthusiasm of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the enthusiasm of Jeshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the enthusiasm of the whole remnant of God’s people. They began to work on the house of their God, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies….

It was by faith that Abel brought a more acceptable offering to God than Cain did. Abel’s offering gave evidence that he was a righteous man, and God showed his approval of his gifts. Although Abel is long dead, he still speaks to us by his example of faith.

It was by faith that Enoch was taken up to heaven without dying—“he disappeared, because God took him.” For before he was taken up, he was known as a person who pleased God.

Prayer

+ I will go, Lord, if You lead me: I will hold Your people in my hand.
+ Deeper in my heart I will hear Your call; I will cry for the desert until my eyes run with tears because people do not obey Your laws.
+ If I open my eyes to the world around me, if I open my heart to the people that surround me, than I feel pain and brokenness, I see suffering and injustice.
+ Lord, see what evil the prince of this world is devising. Let the wind of Your Spirit blow and reverse the works of darkness: and Your fire will cover the earth.

Deliver us, Lord from every evil and grant us peace in our day. In Your mercy, Lord, keep us free from sin, and protect us from all anxiety as we wait in joyful hope for the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Let Your Kingdom come, Lord, in me. Amen.

When Elisha was in his last illness, King Jehoash of Israel visited him and wept over him. “My father! My father! I see the chariots and charioteers of Israel!” he cried.

Then Elisha died and was buried.

Groups of Moabite raiders used to invade the land each spring. Once when some Israelites were burying a man, they spied a band of these raiders. So they hastily threw the corpse into the tomb of Elisha and fled. But as soon as the body touched Elisha’s bones, the dead man revived and jumped to his feet!

At this point everyone in the high council stared at Stephen, because his face became as bright as an angel’s.

Prayer

God be with me in this Your day, every day and every way, with me and for me in this Your day; and the love and affection of heaven be toward me.

+ All that I am, and all that I do – Lord, I place into Your hands.

+ Everything I work for, and everything I hope for – Lord, I place into Your hands.

+ The troubles that weary me, and the thoughts that disturb me – Lord, I place into Your hands.

+ Each one that I pray for, and each one that I care for – Lord, I place into Your hands.

+ In my waking and my rising, and in my living and my dying – Lord, I place myself into Your hands.

Help me to find my happiness in my acceptance of what Your purpose is for me: in friendly eyes, in work well done, and, most of all, in the awareness of Your presence in my spirit. Through my Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen.

Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, You are the good steward, who redeemed Adam and Eve of their failed stewardship by offering Yourself for the life of the world.

+ You teach me in the feeding of the multitudes that whatever I give to God is returned to me multiplied.
+ You praise those good and faithful servants in the parable of the talents who returned to the Master their gifts.

Help me to enter into the joy of stewardship, remembering that everything I have comes from You and belongs to You.

+ I know, Lord, that I often live in fear of the future and insecurity.
+ Help me to remember the lilies of the field and so to trust in Your providence.
+ Grant to me a cheerful and generous spirit and kindle in my heart zealous love for You.

For You are the Good Steward, and to You I give thanks, praise and glory, together with Your Father who is from everlasting and Your all holy good and life-giving Spirit now and ever and onto the ages of ages. Amen

Prayer

God be with me in this Your day, every day and every way, with me and for me in this Your day; and the love and affection of heaven be toward me.

+ Show me what blessing it is that I have work to do. And sometimes, and most of all when the day is overcast and my courage faints, let me hear Your voice, saying, ‘You are my beloved one in whom I am well pleased.’
+ When I stand at the crossroads and look, and ask where the good way is, and walk in it, then I will find rest for my soul.
+ In the name of Christ I stand, and in His name move out across the land in fearlessness and blessing.
+ You have shown me what is right, and what You require of me – to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with You, my God.
