Morning Prayer: 20 Oct – Revelation 14:1-5 ~ a glimpse of glory

Morning Prayer

+ In the name of the Father and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen

Opening sentences

Lord, open my lips and my mouth will proclaim your praise.

I arise today, through God’s strength to pilot me:
God’s might to uphold me, God’s wisdom to guide me,
God’s eye to look before me, God’s ear to hear me,
God’s word to speak for me, God’s hand to guard me,
God’s way to lie before me, God’s shield to protect me,
God’s host to secure me: against snares of devils,
against temptations of vices, against inclinations of nature,
against everyone who shall wish me ill,

Then I looked, and behold, on Mount Zion stood the Lamb, and with him 144,000 who had his name and his Father’s name written on their foreheads. And I heard a voice from heaven like the roar of many waters and like the sound of loud thunder. The voice I heard was like the sound of harpists playing on their harps, and they were singing a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and before the elders. No one could learn that song except the 144,000 who had been redeemed from the earth. It is these who have not defiled themselves with women, for they are virgins. It is these who follow the Lamb wherever he goes. These have been redeemed from mankind as firstfruits for God and the Lamb, and in their mouth no lie was found, for they are blameless.

The Redeemed and the Lamb (14:1-5)

The first vision… pictures the destiny of the people of God who have been preserved through the great tribulation but who have fallen prey to the wrath of the beast. They are seen in the messianic Kingdom. This vision is not actually realized until chapters 20-22, but as he often does, John gives his readers anticipatory visions of what are yet to be to steady them for the hard experiences that lie immediately ahead. (Ladd, p.188-9)

The 144,000 (14:1,3)

The one hundred and forty-four thousand is the same company which was sealed in 7:9-17; and here, as there, they represent the total body of the redeemed… the saints who were suffering martyrdom in the last chapter are now seen in their final salvation in the new Jerusalem…. They are virgins in the sense that they have refused to defile themselves by participating in the fornication of worshiping the beast but have kept themselves pure unto God…. Theirs is a perfect, uncomplaining discipleship. As the path of perfect devotion to the will of the Father led the Lamb to his sacrificial death on the cross, so discipleship to him may well lead to sharing in his cross (Matt 10:38; Mark 8:34). They follow the Lamb because they are not their own but have been redeemed – purchased for God at the cost of the blood of the Lamb (5:9). (Ladd, p. 191-2)

Peanut Gallery: In September, we will begin reading through the Book of Revelation (ESV). Our purpose will be devotional, i.e. to discover the word of blessing that God has for us in these troubled times… to find hope and help for our daily lives.

This will not be a Bible Study per se: we will not attempt to unravel the “mysteries” of Revelation… that is far beyond our abilities and is not our interest here. However, so as not to get too far afield, we will rely on three study resources: primary – A Commentary on the Revelation of John (George Elton Ladd); supplemental Revelation (Leon Morris) and  The Book of Revelation (Robert H. Mounce).

The general format for Morning Prayer is adapted from the Northumbrian Community‘s Daily Office, as found in Celtic Daily Prayer (see online resources here.) On Sundays, we’ll return to the USCCB readings (see online resources here) and various liturgical resources in order to reflect the Church’s worship and concerns throughout the world. Photo illustrations and music videos, available online, are included as they illustrate or illuminate the readings. I will try to give credit and link to sources as best I can.

Morning Prayer, 9 Jan – John 1:19-34 ~ the voice

Morning Prayer

+ In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen

Opening sentence

I arise today through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity, through belief in the Threeness, through confession of the Oneness of the Creator of creation.

I arise today through the strength of Christ with His Baptism, through the strength of His Crucifixion with His Burial, through the strength of His Resurrection with His Ascension…. (St Patrick’s Breastplate)

And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.” And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” So they said to him, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.”

(Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.) They asked him, “Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” John answered them, “I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know, even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.” These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’ I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.” And John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.”

Reflections / Prayer:

This brief encounter between the officials and the Baptist raises searching questions for us. First, do we have the inner openness and deep desire necessary to receive God’s revelation? Second, since our identity, like that of the Baptist, is most truly seen in relation to Christ, how does our life — our relationships and responsibilities — flow from our relation to God? What would we say if asked “Who are you?” and “Why are you doing what you are doing?”?

The Baptist concludes his testimony to Jesus with the central title for Jesus in this Gospel: I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God. His testimony is a model of Christian witness to Jesus! He is also a model of Christian discipleship in his humility… in his recognition of his ignorance, and in his waiting and watching for God’s promised one… Such humility is part of being receptive and obedient to God. One with such a heart is able, like the Baptist, to hear God.

One thing I have asked of the Lord, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life; to behold the beauty of the Lord and to seek Him in His temple.

You will find the Lord Your God if you seek Him with all your heart… all your soul… all your mind… and all your strength.

1 John 3:7-10 NLT:

Those who have been born into God’s family do not make a practice of sinning, because God’s life is in them. So they can’t keep on sinning, because they are children of God. John 1:35-42 NLT:

The following day John was again standing with two of his disciples. As Jesus walked by, John looked at him and declared, “Look! There is the Lamb of God!” When John’s two disciples heard this, they followed Jesus.

Jesus looked around and saw them following. “What do you want?” he asked them.

They replied, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”

“Come and see,” he said. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon when they went with him to the place where he was staying, and they remained with him the rest of the day.

Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of these men who heard what John said and then followed Jesus. Andrew went to find his brother, Simon, and told him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means “Christ”).

Then Andrew brought Simon to meet Jesus. Looking intently at Simon, Jesus said, “Your name is Simon, son of John — but you will be called Cephas” (which means “Peter”).

Reflection/Prayer:

So, what does it mean to be a “child of God in Christ”?

None of us were born a child of Israel under Abraham’s covenant with God. But we are all nonetheless children of God in Christ. We do not follow the Law to show our participation in the covenant; rather, we live in faith, trusting in God’s promises, thus making us His children in Christ. All the work necessary for us to become children of God under the Law was accomplished for us by Christ. He fulfilled all of our obligations: he took on all of our sin debts; made all of our sacrifices; washed us clean and keeps us pure. Faith in him is the New Covenant and by faith we are participants in all he has done. All that is left for us to do is believe, trust, and never forget God’s mercy. When being a child of God through Christ becomes difficult, remember: the Lord will remember His covenant forever. You need only remember it until you see Him face-to-face.

Since we know that Christ is righteous, we also know that all who do what is right are God’s children.

Dear friends, we are already God’s children, but he has not yet shown us what we will be like when Christ appears. But we do know that we will be like him, for we will see him as he really is. He has remembered his promise to love and be faithful to Israel. The ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God.

John 1:29-34 NLT:

The king, his officials, and all the community of Jerusalem decided to celebrate Passover a month later than usual. They were unable to celebrate it at the prescribed time because not enough priests could be purified by then, and the people had not yet assembled at Jerusalem.

This plan for keeping the Passover seemed right to the king and all the people. So they sent a proclamation throughout all Israel, from Beersheba in the south to Dan in the north, inviting everyone to come to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover of the Lord, the God of Israel. The people had not been celebrating it in great numbers as required in the Law.

1 Corinthians 5:7-8 NLT:

Get rid of the old “yeast” by removing this wicked person from among you. Then you will be like a fresh batch of dough made without yeast, which is what you really are. Christ, our Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed for us. So let us celebrate the festival, not with the old bread of wickedness and evil, but with the new bread of sincerity and truth.

Reflection/Prayer:

Jesus and His disciples celebrate the Passover meal a full day earlier than they should, since He knows that if they waited it would not be possible, and He has so desired to share the feast with them, and will not be disappointed. (They are only one day out, after all, and in 2 Chronicles we read how God blessed the reinstitution of Passover even when by force of circumstance His people were a whole month out from the correct date.) Jesus would be on trial all night and nailed to the cross around nine the next morning. Six hours later He died at the exact time when the Passover lambs were also killed.

At the sunset the Preparation would be over and the Passover Feast would begin which must be observed as Sabbath (Leviticus 23:4-8) known as the first day of unleavened bread. Any leaven is carefully hunted for and swept out of a Jewish home before these seven days begin. The soldiers are urged to break the legs of crucified men so they will die more quickly and be removed before the Feast Sabbath begins: Jesus is already dead by now.

He is carried hastily to a borrowed tomb, observed by the women. Between the Feast and the usual weekly Sabbath they have time to prepare the spices for His embalming, then early on the first day of the week, when it is already ‘the third day since all this took place’ they hurry to the tomb and find him gone. Death could not hold him.
