Opening Prayer

Father of light, giver of every good and perfect gift, bring to fruition the word of truth sown in our hearts by your Son, that we may rightly understand your commandments, live your law of love, and so offer you worship that is pure and undefiled. “Here on earth” (Psalm 15) – The Shiyr Poets

Lord who may sojourn | Who may worship and rest
In your sanctuary | Here on earth
Lord who may live on | Who may dwell on your hill
On your holy mountain | Who may dwell

Those who walk without blame and do justice
Speaking truth from their hearts to their neighbor
Those whose tongues speak no slander | No wrong or hateful slur
Who despises a vile and evil man | Yet who honors all who fear the Lord
What they vow they fulfill even when it hurts | They will never change
When they lend to those in need | No interest will be charged | They won’t accept a bribe to speak against the innocent

Those who do these things | Will never stumble and fall
They will not be shaken here on earth
They will not be shaken here on this earth
They will never stumble, never fall here on earth

Lord who may sojourn who may worship and rest
In your sanctuary here on earth . . . . here on earth . . . .

Gospel Reading: Mark 7:1-23 (NLT)

One day some Pharisees and teachers of religious law arrived from Jerusalem to see Jesus. They noticed that some of his disciples failed to follow the Jewish ritual of hand washing before eating. (The Jews, especially the Pharisees, do not eat until they have poured water over their cupped hands, as required by their ancient traditions. Similarly, they don’t eat anything from the market until they immerse their hands in water. This is but one of many traditions they have clung to—such as their ceremonial washing of cups, pitchers, and kettles.

So the Pharisees and teachers of religious law asked him, “Why don’t your disciples follow our age-old tradition? They eat without first performing the hand-washing ceremony.”

Jesus replied, “You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you, for he wrote,

‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship is a farce, for they teach man-made ideas as commands from God.’

For you ignore God’s law and substitute your own tradition.”

Then he said, “You skillfully sidestep God’s law in order to hold on to your own tradition. For instance, Moses gave you this law from God:

‘Honor your father and mother,’ and ‘Anyone who speaks disrespectfully of father or mother must be put to death.’

But you say it is all right for people to say to their parents, ‘Sorry, I can’t help you. For I have vowed to give to God what I would have given to you.’ In this way, you let them disregard their needy parents. And so you cancel the word of God in order to hand down your own tradition. And this is only one example among many others.”

Then Jesus called to the crowd to come and hear. “All of you listen,” he said, “and try to understand. It’s not what goes into your body that defiles you; you are defiled by what comes from your heart.”

Then Jesus went into a house to get away from the crowd, and his disciples asked him what he meant by the parable he had just used. “Don’t you understand either?” he asked. “Can’t you see that the food you put into your body cannot defile you? Food doesn’t go into your heart, but only passes through the stomach and then goes into the sewer.” (By saying this, he declared that every kind of food is acceptable in God’s eyes.)

And then he added, “It is what comes from inside that defiles you. For from within, out of a person’s heart, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness. All these vile things come from within; they are what defile you.”

Morning Reading: Psalm 55 (NLT)

Listen to my prayer, O God. Do not ignore my cry for help! Please listen and answer me, for I am overwhelmed by my troubles. My enemies shout at me, making loud and wicked threats. They bring trouble on me and angrily hunt me down.

My heart pounds in my chest. The terror of death assaults me. Fear and trembling overwhelm me, and I can’t stop shaking. Oh, that I had wings like a dove; then I would fly away and rest! I would fly far away to the quiet of the wilderness.

How quickly I would escape—far from this wild storm of hatred.

Confuse them, Lord, and frustrate their plans, for I see violence and conflict in the city. Its walls are patrolled day and night against invaders, but the real danger is wickedness within the city. Everything is falling apart; threats and cheating are rampant in the streets.

It is not an enemy who taunts me—I could bear that. It is not my foes who so arrogantly insult me—I could have hidden from them. Instead, it is you—my equal, my companion and close friend. What good fellowship we once enjoyed as we walked together to the house of God.

Let death stalk my enemies; let the grave swallow them alive, for evil makes its home within them.

But I will call on God, and the Lord will rescue me. Morning, noon, and night I cry out in my distress, and the Lord hears my voice. He ransoms me and keeps me safe from the battle waged against me, though many still oppose me. God, who has ruled forever, will hear me and humble them.

For my enemies refuse to change their ways; they do not fear God.

As for my companion, he betrayed his friends; he broke his promises. His words are as smooth as butter, but in his heart is war. His words are as soothing as lotion, but underneath are daggers!

Give your burdens to the Lord, and he will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall.

But you, O God, will send the wicked down to the pit of destruction. Murderers and liars will die young, but I am trusting you to save me.
__________

Morning Prayer

O Lord our God: you have appointed a time and place and assigned responsibilities to each one of us – both great and small. Lighten our loads and lift our burdens, especially –

+ For those of us suffering great persecution and hardship…. Lord, have mercy.
+ For those of us experiencing division and disaffection…. Lord, have mercy.
+ For those of us experiencing private sorrows and pain…. Lord, have mercy.
+ For those of us experiencing betrayal and disappointment…. Lord, have mercy.

O Lord our God: we would escape into your loving arms if we could, but our times are in your hands. Hear our prayers and grant us the respite we require that we might trust completely in your loving-kindness and serve you whole-heartedly – we ask in Jesus’ name.

Morning Reading: Psalm 54 (NLT)

Come with great power, O God, and rescue me! Defend me with your might. Listen to my prayer, O God. Pay attention to my plea. For strangers are attacking me; violent people are trying to kill me. They care nothing for God.

But God is my helper. The Lord keeps me alive! May the evil plans of my enemies be turned against them. Do as you promised and put an end to them.

I will sacrifice a voluntary offering to you; I will praise your name, O Lord, for it is good. For you have rescued me from my troubles and helped me to triumph over my enemies.
__________

Morning Prayer

O Lord our God: save us in these perilous times; for you alone rule over our age, you alone have the power to thwart our enemies and sustain our lives –

+ Danger surrounds us at every turn – our minds, our hearts, our souls are at risk…. Lord, save us!
+ You, O Lord, are our helper – give us the courage to stay the course with confidence…. Lord, save us!
+ Draw us ever closer to you – make your will our will, and keep our sights on your ultimate judgement and victory…. Lord, save us!

Morning Reading: Psalm 53 (NLT)

Only fools say in their hearts, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, and their actions are evil; not one of them does good!

God looks down from heaven on the entire human race; he looks to see if anyone is truly wise, if anyone seeks God. But no, all have turned away; all have become corrupt. No one does good, not a single one!

Will those who do evil never learn? They eat up my people like bread and wouldn’t think of praying to God. Terror will grip them, terror like they have never known before. God will scatter the bones of your enemies. You will put them to shame, for God has rejected them.

Who will come from Mount Zion to rescue Israel? When God restores his people, Jacob will shout with joy, and Israel will rejoice.
__________

Morning Prayer

O Lord our God: you made the world and everything in it and, through your creation, you displayed your invisible qualities – your eternal power and divine nature. Humankind is without excuse; only fools and sinful, wicked people deny this essential truth –

+ Protect us from the folly of wicked people who deny you…
+ Protect us from the folly of life without your controlling moral authority…
+ Protect us from the folly of meaninglessness and despair without hope of redemption…

O Lord our God: you are the Rewarder of all who diligently seek you. And you have given us your Son, Jesus Christ, to lead us by faith along the path of godliness –

+  Give us the wisdom to trust him to satisfy the deep longing of our souls…
+ Give us the wisdom to permit his Word and Spirit to govern us in holiness, justice, and goodness…
+ Give us the wisdom to rest in his promises and rely on his mercy and loving-kindness…
+ Give us the wisdom to live in his power and strength and bear witness to you, the Triune God – Father, Son and Spirit – One God for ever and ever…

O Lord our God: restore all your people through your Son, Jesus Christ, and give us the patience to wait for his victorious return when the kingdoms of this world become the kingdoms of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign for ever and ever. Amen.

Praying the Psalms

+ In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen!

Opening – (Northumbria Community)

One thing I have asked of the Lord, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life; to behold the beauty of the Lord and to seek Him in His temple.

Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ, King of endless glory.
__________

Morning Reading: Psalm 52 (NLT)

Why do you boast about your crimes, great warrior? Don’t you realize God’s justice continues forever? All day long you plot destruction. Your tongue cuts like a sharp razor; you’re an expert at telling lies. You love evil more than good and lies more than truth.

You love to destroy others with your words, you liar! But God will strike you down once and for all. He will pull you from your home and uproot you from the land of the living.

The righteous will see it and be amazed. They will laugh and say, “Look what happens to mighty warriors who do not trust in God. They trust their wealth instead and grow more and more bold in their wickedness.”

But I am like an olive tree, thriving in the house of God. I will always trust in God’s unfailing love. I will praise you forever, O God, for what you have done. I will trust in your good name in the presence of your faithful people.
__________

Morning Prayer

O Lord our God: help us make sense out of the chaos in our country and the betrayal of our common values –

+ Deliver us from odious, deceitful, people with malice in their hearts and hatred on their lips…
+ Unmask their treachery and evil-doing; expose them and put them to public shame, and may their efforts come to nothing…

O Lord our God: righteousness and justice are in your hands –

+ May truth prevail over lies and deceit…
+ May the deadly wages of sin be realized in our time…
+ May the godly receive your blessing, now and for ever…

O Lord our God: we place our faith and trust in the Holy One of Israel, your Son, Jesus Christ, rejoicing in his love and hoping forever in his mercy and grace. Amen.
