Ninth Sunday after Pentecost – 22 July – Mark 6:30-34 ~ sheep without a shepherd

Ninth Sunday after Pentecost

+ In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen!

Opening Prayer

Compassionate God, from far and near you gather your people into one flock. Safeguard the unity of your flock through the teaching of Christ the Shepherd, that all your scattered children may find in him the guidance and nourishment they seek. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

Gospel Reading: Mark 6:30-34 (NLT)

The apostles returned to Jesus from their ministry tour and told him all they had done and taught. Then Jesus said, “Let’s go off by ourselves to a quiet place and rest awhile.” He said this because there were so many people coming and going that Jesus and his apostles didn’t even have time to eat.

So they left by boat for a quiet place, where they could be alone. But many people recognized them and saw them leaving, and people from many towns ran ahead along the shore and got there ahead of them. Jesus saw the huge crowd as he stepped from the boat, and he had compassion on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.

Prayers of Intercession:

Good Shepherd: Gather us into your fold, we need your protection and tender care. In your kindness, hear our prayers on behalf of your people –

+ For all who pastor your people – that they may be good shepherds after your example….
+ For all who care for animals – that they may be rewarded for their husbandry….
+ For all who feel lost – that you may find them, teach them, and lead them home….
+ For all who work hard in their parishes – that they make time for rest and recreation….
+ For all who help others to pray and reflect – that the Spirit may guide them into all truth….
+ For all who have asked our prayers – that our care may remind them of your love for them….
+ For all who have died in Christ – that they may dwell in your presence forever….

O God, our Shepherd, your goodness and kindness help us every day: Hear our prayers and be with us in our needs, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Reflection & Prayer

Think About The Things Of Heaven

Colossians 3:1-4 (NLT)Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand. Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God. And when Christ, who is your life, is revealed to the whole world, you will share in all his glory.

Lord God: You have claimed me as your own through faith and baptism, and made me a new creation in Christ Jesus. Continue the good work you have begun in me – that there might be less of me in me, and more of Christ in me – that my true life in Christ might be revealed.

Put to death your old nature

+ Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires.

+ Don’t be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world.

+ Get rid of anger, rage, malicious behavior, slander, and dirty language.

Put on your new nature

+ Clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.

+ Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you.

+ Clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony.

+ Let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts; and always be thankful.

Devote Yourselves To Prayer

Colossians 4:2 (NLT)Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart.

Lord God: Thank you for allowing to approach your throne of grace through faith in your Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ. We ask for your mercy and help in this our time of need.

+ That you might give us many opportunities to speak about your plan concerning Christ.

+ That we might proclaim this message as clearly as we should.

+ That we might live wisely among those who are not believers, and make the most of every opportunity.

+ That our conversations might be gracious and attractive – the right response for everyone.

Lord God: I ask that the message about Christ, in all its richness, might fill our lives. And that whatever we do or say, might be done and said as representatives of our Lord Jesus, always giving thanks through him to you, our heavenly Father.
