The lands beyond the sea watch in fear. Remote lands tremble and mobilize for war. The idol makers encourage one another, saying to each other, “Be strong!”

“The wind blows wherever it wants. Just as you can hear the wind but can’t tell where it comes from or where it is going, so you can’t explain how people are born of the Spirit.”

Prayer

Then I heard a voice in heaven saying, ‘Whom shall I send? and who will go for us? Then said I, ‘Here I am; send me.’

+ Lord God, I pray for all those who have gone out into the world in response to Your call; hear the cries of their hearts, and work Your wonders in them and through them.
+ Spirit of God, be their strength and guide; and fill them with Your power to comfort the broken-hearted, give sight to the blind, and set the captives free.
+ Spirit of God, revitalize them from within, protect them from without, and go before them to prepare the hearts of all whom they encounter along the way.
+ Lord God, may the cause of Christ triumph through their faithful witness, and may Your work prosper wherever You send them.

Gracious God: may the protection of Christ clothe us and enfold us, surround us and guard us, this day and every day, surrounding us and our companions, enfolding us and our friends. In Your mercy, Lord, keep us free from sin, and protect us from all anxiety as we wait in joyful hope for the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Let Your Kingdom come, Lord, in us. Amen.

+ Praise to You, Lord God of heaven and earth. To You belong all wisdom and power; and from You I generously receive wisdom and strength.
+ Build into my life a daily habit of quietude in the security of Your presence, from which I can venture forth into this noisy, uncertain world to love and serve You.
+ Remind me constantly that You are in control of world events, regardless of how things looks from my limited perspective.
+ Raise up men and women who will champion the poor, free the enslaved, and also be the friends of rulers and those in authority; and show me my part in all of this.
+ Bless all who are entrusted with these responsibilities with true friends, and may they faithfully witness to Your power and love.
+ Give me the gift of faithfulness and generosity, and free me from my selfishness; may I give freely from the largess I have received from Your hand.

+ Use me, Lord, as an instrument of Your mercy to lift the burden of those who are struggling in life. May I serve them just as eagerly as I would serve You.
+ Lord, see what evil the prince of this world is devising. Let the wind of Your Spirit blow and reverse the works of darkness: and Your fire will cover the earth.

How great is the Lord, how deserving of praise, in the city of our God, which sits on his holy mountain!

It is high and magnificent; the whole earth rejoices to see it! Mount Zion, the holy mountain, is the city of the great King! God himself is in Jerusalem’s towers, revealing himself as its defender.

Then Haggai, the Lord’s messenger, gave the people this message from the Lord: “I am with you, says the Lord!”

So the Lord sparked the enthusiasm of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the enthusiasm of Jeshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the enthusiasm of the whole remnant of God’s people. They began to work on the house of their God, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies….

It was by faith that Abel brought a more acceptable offering to God than Cain did. Abel’s offering gave evidence that he was a righteous man, and God showed his approval of his gifts. Although Abel is long dead, he still speaks to us by his example of faith.

It was by faith that Enoch was taken up to heaven without dying—“he disappeared, because God took him.” For before he was taken up, he was known as a person who pleased God.
