After Pentecost | Monday 20 Jul 2026: Psalm 75; Nahum 1:1-13; Revelation 14:12-20 ~ Blessed are those who die in the Lord.

After Pentecost | Monday 20 Jul 2026

+ In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen

Opening prayer:

O God, you declare your almighty power
chiefly in showing mercy and pity:
Grant us the fullness of your grace, that we,
running to obtain your promises,
may become partakers of your heavenly treasure;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

“God’s holy people
must endure persecution patiently.”
(Revelation 14:12)

OT Reading: Nahum 1:1-13 (NLT)

1:1 This message concerning Nineveh came as a vision to Nahum, who lived in Elkosh.

The Lord’s Anger against Nineveh

1:2 The Lord is a jealous God,
filled with vengeance and rage.
He takes revenge on all who oppose him
and continues to rage against his enemies!
+ The Lord is slow to get angry, but his power is great,
and he never lets the guilty go unpunished.
He displays his power in the whirlwind and the storm.
The billowing clouds are the dust beneath his feet.
+ At his command the oceans dry up,
and the rivers disappear.
The lush pastures of Bashan and Carmel fade,
and the green forests of Lebanon wither.
+ In his presence the mountains quake,
and the hills melt away;
the earth trembles,
and its people are destroyed.
+ Who can stand before his fierce anger?
Who can survive his burning fury?
His rage blazes forth like fire,
and the mountains crumble to dust in his presence.

1:7 The Lord is good,
a strong refuge when trouble comes.
He is close to those who trust in him.
+ But he will sweep away his enemies
in an overwhelming flood.
He will pursue his foes
into the darkness of night.

1:9 Why are you scheming against the Lord?
He will destroy you with one blow;
he won’t need to strike twice!
+ His enemies, tangled like thornbushes
and staggering like drunks,
will be burned up like dry stubble in a field.
+ Who is this wicked counselor of yours
who plots evil against the Lord?

1:12 This is what the Lord says:
“Though the Assyrians have many allies,
they will be destroyed and disappear.
O my people, I have punished you before,
but I will not punish you again.
+ Now I will break the yoke of bondage from your neck
and tear off the chains of Assyrian oppression.”

NT Reading: Revelation 14:12-20 (NLT)

14:12 This means that God’s holy people must endure persecution patiently, obeying his commands and maintaining their faith in Jesus.

+ And I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Write this down: Blessed are those who die in the Lord from now on. Yes, says the Spirit, they are blessed indeed, for they will rest from their hard work; for their good deeds follow them!”

The Harvest of the Earth

14:14 Then I saw a white cloud, and seated on the cloud was someone like the Son of Man. He had a gold crown on his head and a sharp sickle in his hand.

+ Then another angel came from the Temple and shouted to the one sitting on the cloud, “Swing the sickle, for the time of harvest has come; the crop on earth is ripe.” So the one sitting on the cloud swung his sickle over the earth, and the whole earth was harvested.

+ After that, another angel came from the Temple in heaven, and he also had a sharp sickle. Then another angel, who had power to destroy with fire, came from the altar. He shouted to the angel with the sharp sickle, “Swing your sickle now to gather the clusters of grapes from the vines of the earth, for they are ripe for judgment.” So the angel swung his sickle over the earth and loaded the grapes into the great winepress of God’s wrath. The grapes were trampled in the winepress outside the city, and blood flowed from the winepress in a stream about 180 miles long and as high as a horse’s bridle.

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Gracious and holy Father, please give me intellect to understand you, reason to discern you, diligence to seek you, wisdom to find you, a spirit to know you, a heart to meditate upon you, ears to hear you, eyes to see you, a tongue to proclaim you, a way of life pleasing to you, patience to wait for you, and perseverance to look for you. Grant me a  perfect  end, your holy presence, a blessed resurrection, and life everlasting. Amen. | Benedict of Nursia

O God, our heavenly Father: Pour out your Spirit on your Church, that we may fulfill Christ’s command to preach the Gospel to all people. Send forth laborers into your harvest; defend them in all dangers and temptations; and hasten the time when the fullness of the Gentiles shall be gathered in, and faithful Israel shall be saved; through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
