Thursday of the Third Week of Lent

+ In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen!

Opening Sentences

Heavenly Father, you made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you: Look upon the heartfelt desires of your humble servants, and stretch forth the strong hand of your Majesty to be our defense against our enemies; through Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, world without end. Amen.

Reading: John 6:15-21 (NLT)

When Jesus saw that they were ready to force him to be their king, he slipped away into the hills by himself.

That evening Jesus’ disciples went down to the shore to wait for him. But as darkness fell and Jesus still hadn’t come back, they got into the boat and headed across the lake toward Capernaum.

Soon a gale swept down upon them, and the sea grew very rough. They had rowed three or four miles when suddenly they saw Jesus walking on the water toward the boat. They were terrified, but he called out to them, “Don’t be afraid. I am here!”

Then they were eager to let him in the boat, and immediately they arrived at their destination!

Prayer:

Immortal, Invisible, God only Wise: even when I can’t see you, you are with me; and your presence gives me peace and leads me on the pathway to life.

+ Forgive my distrust and impatience that leads me to strike out on my own.
+ Thank you for the gale-force storms that have threatened to overwhelm me.
+ Thank you for your words of assurance: “Don’t be afraid. I am here!”

Unchanging Father of Glory: you are the giver of life; you are my true life. Calm my fears and strengthen my resolve to follow your lead. Through my Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
