Morning Prayer: Mon, 16 Jan – Psalm 5:4-8; Proverbs 4:13-15; James 4:7-10 ~ humble yourself

Monday of the Second Week in Ordinary Time

+ In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen!

Opening Sentence

O God, come to our aid.

O Lord, make haste to help us.

Reading: Psalm 5:4-8 (NLT)

O God, you take no pleasure in wickedness; you cannot tolerate the sins of the wicked. Therefore, the proud may not stand in your presence, for you hate all who do evil. You will destroy those who tell lies. The Lord detests murderers and deceivers.

Because of your unfailing love, I can enter your house; I will worship at your Temple with deepest awe. Lead me in the right path, O Lord, or my enemies will conquer me. Make your way plain for me to follow.

Reading: Proverbs 4:13-15 (NLT)

Take hold of my instructions; don’t let them go. Guard them, for they are the key to life.

Don’t do as the wicked do, and don’t follow the path of evildoers. Don’t even think about it; don’t go that way. Turn away and keep moving.

Reading: James 4:7-10 (NLT)

So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world. Let there be tears for what you have done. Let there be sorrow and deep grief. Let there be sadness instead of laughter, and gloom instead of joy. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor.

Almighty God and Lord: you cannot tolerate the sins of the wicked, the proud, the liar and the deceiver.

+ Humble me before you, and fill me with sorrow and sadness for my sins against you.
+ Purify my heart; I confess that my loyalty is divided between you and this world.
+ Forgive me, and cover me with your unfailing love that might I come into your presence.
+ Write your word on my heart and change my thinking that I might walk the path you have mapped out for me.
+ Protect me by your power and deliver me from evil through the course of this day that I might not turn aside to any sin.
+ Fill me with your Spirit that my every thought, word and deed might aim at doing what is pleasing in your sight.

Through my Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
