Peanut Gallery: During the month of June we are reading through the Book of Proverbs, one chapter per day. “Growing in Character” is the theme; each day we will look for practical advice on living a wise and godly life in this present age.
I recommend that you begin by reading through the entire chapter for the day yourself (a link will be included, see below.) There is something for everyone in the Book of Proverbs. I will focus on what speaks to me in the chapter and follow that theme for the day. But the verse that speaks to me, on any particular day, may be different from the wisdom God has for you… and you don’t want to miss out.
Growing in Character: Proverbs 10
+ In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Opening sentence and prayer
One thing I have asked of the Lord, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life; to behold the beauty of the Lord and to seek Him in His temple.
Open my eyes, Lord, to see the wonderful truths in your instructions. Psalm 119:18 (NLT)
A reading from Proverbs: Proverbs 9:19 (NLT)
Too much talk leads to sin. Be sensible and keep your mouth shut.
A reading from the Letters: James 1:19-21 (NLT)
Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. Human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires. So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls.
Put a lid on it / What’s that you say?
Put a lid on it / Oh man no way
Put a lid down on it and everything will be all right.
Put a lid on it / Don’t hand me that
Put a lid on it / I’m all right Jack
Put a lid down on it before somebody starts a fight.
Say every time I turn it loose you cats
Come down and cook my goose
When I start I just can’t stop
But if you keep this up you’re gonna blow your top!
Put a lid on it / Too late this time
Put a lid on it / I’ve got to get what’s mine
Put a lid down on it, and everything will be all right.
Well, grab your drink and clear a space
I think it’s time to torch this place
Now the girl’s in overdrive
But some of your pals want to stay alive!
I’ll put a lid on it
I’ll put a lid down on it
Save it for another night
Lord, enable me to guard my ways, that I may not sin with my tongue, and to guard my mouth, as if with a muzzle, that it may not be hasty to utter a word. Set a guard, O LORD, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips, that I may not stumble in what I say.
Let my speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, and enable me always, out of the good treasure of my heart, to bring forth good. Let my mouth utter wisdom, and my tongue speak justice; and let not your words depart out of my mouth, or out of the mouth of my offspring, or my children’s offspring, from this time forth and forevermore.
Enable me always to open my mouth with wisdom, and let the teaching of kindness be on my tongue. Give me to know what is acceptable, that my tongue may be as choice silver, and my lips may feed many.
(Matthew Henry at prayer)
Christ, as a light illumine and guide me. Christ, as a shield overshadow me. Christ under me; Christ over me; Christ beside me on my left and my right.
This day be within and without me, lowly and meek, yet all-powerful. Be in the heart of each to whom I speak; in the mouth of each who speaks unto me. This day be within and without me, lowly and meek, yet all-powerful.
Christ as a light; Christ as a shield; Christ beside me on my left and my right.
May the peace of the Lord Christ go with you, wherever He may send you. May He guide you through the wilderness, protect you through the storm. May He bring you home rejoicing at the wonders He has shown you. May He bring you home rejoicing once again into our doors.
+ In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen
