Wednesday of 6th Week of Easter, 24 May – John 16:12-15 ~ God’s Spokesperson

Wednesday of the Sixth Week of Easter

+ In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen!

Opening Prayer

Lord God, Heavenly Father, you are not far away from me, for in you I live and move and exist and you live in me through your Holy Spirit. Be indeed with me, Lord, send me your Holy Spirit of truth and through him deepen my understanding of the life and teaching of your Son, that I may accept the full truth and live by it consistently. I ask this through Christ my Lord.

Reading: John 16:12-15 (NLT)

“There is so much more I want to tell you, but you can’t bear it now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me. All that belongs to the Father is mine; this is why I said, ‘The Spirit will tell you whatever he receives from me.’

Reflection & Prayer:

Heavenly Father: Thank you for your kindness and gentleness to me; you give me what I need when I need it, but you don’t overwhelm me with more than I can handle at the time. You have been a good Father to me.

Continue the work of transformation in me that Jesus began through his Word and Spirit. The more I learn about you, the more I realize I have so much more to learn – it’s a life-long process as the ages and stages of my life unfold and I encounter challenges and opportunities that I’ve never dealt with before.

Speak to me again today; apply your Word to my life experience; show me what you would have me say and do; and give me the courage and strength to put my faith to work. Through Jesus my Lord – the Way, the Truth, and the Life – who lives with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Let them all praise the name of the Lord. For his name is very great; his glory towers over the earth and heaven! He has made his people strong, honoring his faithful ones—the people of Israel who are close to him.

Praise the Lord!

A Reading from Acts: Acts 17:15, 17:22-18:1 (NLT)

Those escorting Paul went with him all the way to Athens; then they returned to Berea with instructions for Silas and Timothy to hurry and join him.

So Paul, standing before the council, addressed them as follows: “Men of Athens, I notice that you are very religious in every way, for as I was walking along I saw your many shrines. And one of your altars had this inscription on it: ‘To an Unknown God.’ This God, whom you worship without knowing, is the one I’m telling you about.

“He is the God who made the world and everything in it. Since he is Lord of heaven and earth, he doesn’t live in man-made temples, and human hands can’t serve his needs — for he has no needs. He himself gives life and breath to everything, and he satisfies every need. From one man he created all the nations throughout the whole earth. He decided beforehand when they should rise and fall, and he determined their boundaries.

“His purpose was for the nations to seek after God and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him — though he is not far from any one of us. For in him we live and move and exist. As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’ And since this is true, we shouldn’t think of God as an idol designed by craftsmen from gold or silver or stone.

“God overlooked people’s ignorance about these things in earlier times, but now he commands everyone everywhere to repent of their sins and turn to him. For he has set a day for judging the world with justice by the man he has appointed, and he proved to everyone who this is by raising him from the dead.”

When they heard Paul speak about the resurrection of the dead, some laughed in contempt, but others said, “We want to hear more about this later.” That ended Paul’s discussion with them, but some joined him and became believers. Among them were Dionysius, a member of the council, a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

Then Paul left Athens and went to Corinth.

Canticle

Christ, as a light illumine and guide me. Christ as a shield overshadow me. Christ under me; Christ over me; Christ beside me on my left and my right.

This day be within and without me, lowly and meek, yet all-powerful. Be in the heart of each to whom I speak; in the mouth of each who speaks unto me. This day be within and without me, lowly and meek, yet all-powerful.

Christ as a light; Christ as a shield; Christ beside me on my left and my right.

Blessing:

May the Lord Christ go with you, wherever He may send you. May He guide you through the wilderness, protect you through the storm. May He bring you home rejoicing at the wonders He has shown you. May He bring you home rejoicing once again into our doors.

+ In the Name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen
