After Pentecost | Tuesday 13 Jun 2023: Psalm 40:1-8; Hosea 8:11-14; 10:1-2; Hebrews 13:1-16 ~ Through Jesus offer a sacrifice of praise.

After Pentecost | Tuesday 13 Jun 2023

+ In the Name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Opening:

Grant, O Lord, that the course of this world may be so
peaceably ordered by your providence, that your Church may
joyfully serve you in quiet confidence and godly peace; through
Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the
Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Therefore, let us offer through Jesus
a continual sacrifice of praise to God,
proclaiming our allegiance to his name.
(Hebrews 13:15)

From Psalms: Psalm 40:1-8 (There Is Joy) | Monterey Music | Live on the Rooftop

I waited patiently for the Lord
He turned to me and heard my cry
He lifted me out of the mire
He set my feet on solid ground
He steadied me as I walked along
He’s given me a new song to sing

Many will see what He has done
Oh and they will be amazed

Oh the joy
Oh the joy of those who trust
In the Lord
There is joy when we trust the Lord

Your plans are so numerous
My God you… are matchless
When I think about your wonders
They never end!

I take joy in doing Your will
For Your word is written on my heart

OT Reading: Hosea 8:11-14; 10:1-2 (NLT)

8:11 “Israel has built many altars to take away sin,
but these very altars became places for sinning!
Even though I gave them all my laws,
they act as if those laws don’t apply to them.
The people love to offer sacrifices to me,
feasting on the meat,
but I do not accept their sacrifices.
I will hold my people accountable for their sins,
and I will punish them.
They will return to Egypt.
Israel has forgotten its Maker and built great palaces,
and Judah has fortified its cities.
Therefore, I will send down fire on their cities
and will burn up their fortresses.”

The Lord’s Judgment against Israel

10:1 How prosperous Israel is—
a luxuriant vine loaded with fruit.
But the richer the people get,
the more pagan altars they build.
The more bountiful their harvests,
the more beautiful their sacred pillars.
The hearts of the people are fickle;
they are guilty and must be punished.
The Lord will break down their altars
and smash their sacred pillars.

Concluding Words

13:1 Keep on loving each other as brothers and sisters. Don’t forget to show hospitality to strangers, for some who have done this have entertained angels without realizing it! Remember those in prison, as if you were there yourself. Remember also those being mistreated, as if you felt their pain in your own bodies.

Give honor to marriage, and remain faithful to one another in marriage. God will surely judge people who are immoral and those who commit adultery.

Don’t love money; be satisfied with what you have. For God has said,

“I will never fail you.
I will never abandon you.”

So we can say with confidence,

“The Lord is my helper,
so I will have no fear.
What can mere people do to me?”

Remember your leaders who taught you the word of God. Think of all the good that has come from their lives, and follow the example of their faith.

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. So do not be attracted by strange, new ideas. Your strength comes from God’s grace, not from rules about food, which don’t help those who follow them.

We have an altar from which the priests in the Tabernacle have no right to eat. Under the old system, the high priest brought the blood of animals into the Holy Place as a sacrifice for sin, and the bodies of the animals were burned outside the camp. So also Jesus suffered and died outside the city gates to make his people holy by means of his own blood. So let us go out to him, outside the camp, and bear the disgrace he bore. For this world is not our permanent home; we are looking forward to a home yet to come.

Therefore, let us offer through Jesus a continual sacrifice of praise to God, proclaiming our allegiance to his name. And don’t forget to do good and to share with those in need. These are the sacrifices that please God.
