Praying the Psalms: Thu, 12 Jul – Psalm 11 ~ the Lord still rules

Praying the Psalms

+ In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen!

Opening – (Northumbria Community)

One thing I have asked of the Lord, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life; to behold the beauty of the Lord and to seek Him in His temple.

Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ, King of endless glory.

Morning Reading: Psalm 11 (NLT)

I trust in the Lord for protection.

So why do you say to me, “Fly like a bird to the mountains for safety! The wicked are stringing their bows and fitting their arrows on the bowstrings. They shoot from the shadows at those whose hearts are right. The foundations of law and order have collapsed. What can the righteous do?”

But the Lord is in his holy Temple; the Lord still rules from heaven. He watches everyone closely, examining every person on earth.

The Lord examines both the righteous and the wicked. He hates those who love violence. He will rain down blazing coals and burning sulfur on the wicked, punishing them with scorching winds.

For the righteous Lord loves justice. The virtuous will see his face.
__________

Morning Prayer

Lord our God: Give us the courage required to face the dangers and difficulties of our times with confident determination –

+ That we may ignore the advice of fearful people
+ That we may ignore the advice of depressed people
+ That we may stand firm in the face of imminent danger
+ That we may stand firm in the face of godless mockers

Lord our God: We place our trust in you, our all-sufficient Helper –

+ For you are the King of the universe, ruling over our times
+ For you see everything that’s going on, you examine every motive
+ For you love the godly and loathe the wicked
+ For you will exercise a righteous retribution on the wicked

Lord our God: Whom shall we fear, when you reign Supreme? We place our trust in you. Amen.
__________

God Hasn’t Moved (Psalm 11) – The Shiyr Poets

In the Lord is my protection | In the Lord I place my trust
So why do you say ‘Off to the hills’ | Like a bird flies for safety
Why do you say?

For look the wicked bend back their bow
They fix to the string their arrow
They shoot from the gloom at the upright

When the foundations are gone | What can the righteous do?
When law and order collapse | What can the righteous do?

God hasn’t moved | God hasn’t moved
God hasn’t moved to the mountains
God hasn’t moved

The Lord is in His holy temple | The Lord is in His holy temple
The Lord is in His holy temple | He still rules
He hasn’t moved | God hasn’t moved

The Lord will watch all who live on the earth
He sees everyone unblinking | He’s testing the righteous
But the one who loves violence he hates

Upon the wicked rains | Fiery coals; judgment’s pain
Emptiness their portion | A scorching wind is all that remains

For the Lord our God is righteous
And righteous acts are what He loves
We will see His face | We will see His face
We will see His face | We will see . . .
God hasn’t moved | He hasn’t moved
God hasn’t moved

Praying the Psalms: Wed, 11 Jul – Psalm 10 ~ Punish the wicked, O God!

Morning Reading: Psalm 10 (NLT)

O Lord, why do you stand so far away? Why do you hide when I am in trouble?

The wicked arrogantly hunt down the poor. Let them be caught in the evil they plan for others. For they brag about their evil desires; they praise the greedy and curse the Lord.

The wicked are too proud to seek God. They seem to think that God is dead. Yet they succeed in everything they do. They do not see your punishment awaiting them. They sneer at all their enemies. They think, “Nothing bad will ever happen to us! We will be free of trouble forever!”

  • Their mouths are full of cursing, lies, and threats.
  • Trouble and evil are on the tips of their tongues.
  • They lurk in ambush in the villages, waiting to murder innocent people.
  • They are always searching for helpless victims. Like lions crouched in hiding, they wait to pounce on the helpless. Like hunters they capture the helpless and drag them away in nets.
  • Their helpless victims are crushed; they fall beneath the strength of the wicked.

The wicked think, “God isn’t watching us! He has closed his eyes and won’t even see what we do!”

Arise, O Lord! Punish the wicked, O God! Do not ignore the helpless! Why do the wicked get away with despising God? They think, “God will never call us to account.” But you see the trouble and grief they cause. You take note of it and punish them. The helpless put their trust in you. You defend the orphans.

Break the arms of these wicked, evil people! Go after them until the last one is destroyed. The Lord is king forever and ever! The godless nations will vanish from the land. Lord, you know the hopes of the helpless. Surely you will hear their cries and comfort them. You will bring justice to the orphans and the oppressed, so mere people can no longer terrify them.
__________

Morning Prayer

Righteous God: Hear the cries of the helpless, and bring justice to the orphans and oppressed. Punish the wicked –

  • They imagine themselves to be above all restraint, above the Law.
  • They boast in their evil ways and are accountable to no one.
  • They feel secure in their positions of power and authority.
  • They are full of deceit and and violence against the innocent.
  • They are cruel and ravenous; they believe that you don’t care.
  • They despise you, O Lord, and defile your name.

Righteous God: You are the hope of the helpless and the defender of the forlorn; do not disappoint them. Free them from all terror and violence –

  • For you are King for ever and ever, nothing can overturn your will.
  • For the triumph of your righteousness is a forgone conclusion.

Righteous God: Finish the good work you have begun as we await for your coming in power – to destroy all wickedness and establish your Kingdom, on earth as it is in heaven. Amen.
__________

On This Troubled Day (Psalm 10) – The Shiyr Poets

Why | Do you stand?
So far away | Why?
Why | Would you hide?
On this troubled day | Why?

The wicked in pride pursuing the weak
Catch them in the schemes they devise
The wicked boasting ‘There is no God’
Let their own words condemn them
Let their own words condemn them

Arise | Lord my God
Lift up your hand | Arise
Don’t | Forget the humble
Who dwell in the land | Don’t forget

The wicked despising God in their heart
Thinking no one can judge them
But You see it all and You will repay
The godless people will perish
The nations without You vanish

You know the hopes of all the poor
You answer their cries with comfort
Justice will come for fatherless ones
Bringing an end to oppression
You bring to an end oppression

The Lord reigns as king forevermore
As king for all time

No | No no more
Will mortal man | Terrify your own
No | No no more | No no more

Praying the Psalms: Tue, 10 Jul – Psalm 9 ~ the Lord reigns forever

Praying the Psalms

+ In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen!

Opening – (Northumbria Community)

One thing I have asked of the Lord, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life; to behold the beauty of the Lord and to seek Him in His temple.

Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ, King of endless glory.

Morning Reading: Psalm 9 (NLT)

I will praise you, Lord, with all my heart;
I will tell of all the marvelous things you have done.
I will be filled with joy because of you.
I will sing praises to your name, O Most High.

My enemies retreated; they staggered and died when you appeared. For you have judged in my favor; from your throne you have judged with fairness. You have rebuked the nations and destroyed the wicked; you have erased their names forever. The enemy is finished, in endless ruins; the cities you uprooted are now forgotten.

But the Lord reigns forever, executing judgment from his throne. He will judge the world with justice and rule the nations with fairness. The Lord is a shelter for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble. Those who know your name trust in you, for you, O Lord, do not abandon those who search for you.

Sing praises to the Lord who reigns in Jerusalem.  Tell the world about his unforgettable deeds. For he who avenges murder cares for the helpless. He does not ignore the cries of those who suffer.

Lord, have mercy on me. See how my enemies torment me. Snatch me back from the jaws of death. Save me so I can praise you publicly at Jerusalem’s gates, so I can rejoice that you have rescued me.

The nations have fallen into the pit they dug for others. Their own feet have been caught in the trap they set. The Lord is known for his justice. The wicked are trapped by their own deeds. [Quiet Interlude]

The wicked will go down to the grave. This is the fate of all the nations who ignore God. But the needy will not be ignored forever; the hopes of the poor will not always be crushed.

Arise, O Lord! Do not let mere mortals defy you!
Judge the nations! Make them tremble in fear, O Lord.
Let the nations know they are merely human.
__________

Morning Prayer

O Lord our God: Create in us a stillness – that we might worship you joyfully and wholeheartedly.

  • For you are our King – you remember the helpless and hear their cries….
  • For you are our King – you remember the suffering and hear their cries….
  • For you are Trustworthy – you rule in righteousness, faithfulness and truth….
  • For you are our Savior – you raise up those who have been brought low, near death….
  • For you are our Refuge – you shelter and protect all who depend on you for their safety….
  • For you are our Judge – you punish the wicked and destroy your enemies….
  • For you are the Ruler of nations – you hold their fate in your hands….

O Lord, our God: We sing your praise and trust you with our lives. You alone are the Most High King, the Ruler of all.

Praying the Psalms: Mon, 09 Jul – Psalm 8 ~ majestic glory

Praying the Psalms

+ In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen!

Opening – (Northumbria Community)

One thing I have asked of the Lord, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life; to behold the beauty of the Lord and to seek Him in His temple.

Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ, King of endless glory.

Morning Reading: Psalm 8 (NLT)

O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth! Your glory is higher than the heavens. You have taught children and infants to tell of your strength, silencing your enemies and all who oppose you.

When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers—the moon and the stars you set in place—what are mere mortals that you should think about them, human beings that you should care for them? Yet you made them only a little lower than God and crowned them with glory and honor. You gave them charge of everything you made, putting all things under their authority—the flocks and the herds and all the wild animals, the birds in the sky, the fish in the sea, and everything that swims the ocean currents.

O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth!
__________

Morning Prayer

Lord our God: your majestic glory fills the earth –

  • Give us eyes to see the wonder and beauty of your creation….
  • Give us minds to recognize your sovereignty over human history….
  • Give us hearts to receive your redemption through your Son, Jesus Christ….

Lord our God: your majestic glory fills the heavens and yet, you have shown special favor to frail humanity –

  • You think about us and care for us….
  • You made us in your image, crowned with glory and honor….
  • You entrusted us with the care of your creation….

Lord our God: you amaze us everywhere we turn. Your majestic glory is all around us. Show us your glory!
__________

“Majestic (Psalm 8)” – The Shiyr Poets

O Lord our Lord | How majestic is your name in all the earth
O Lord our Lord | You have set your glory higher than the heavens

Through your children’s purest praise
You establish strength against your foes
To silence all your enemies; every avenger

When I consider the heavens | When I consider the work of your hands
The moon and the stars | Which You have set in place

What is man that you are mindful | Humankind that you care
Who are we that you consider us

You made us a little less than the gods
And clothed us with glory and grandeur

You make them rule | Over the work of your hands
Everything under their feet | Beasts of the field | Flocks of the air | Fish in the sea

Praying the Psalms: Sat, 07 Jul – Psalm 7 ~ Protect us!

Morning Reading: Psalm 7 (NLT)

I come to you for protection, O Lord my God. Save me from my persecutors—rescue me! If you don’t, they will maul me like a lion, tearing me to pieces with no one to rescue me.

O Lord my God, if I have done wrong or am guilty of injustice, if I have betrayed a friend or plundered my enemy without cause, then let my enemies capture me. Let them trample me into the ground and drag my honor in the dust.

Arise, O Lord, in anger! Stand up against the fury of my enemies! Wake up, my God, and bring justice! Gather the nations before you. Rule over them from on high.

The Lord judges the nations. Declare me righteous, O Lord, for I am innocent, O Most High!

End the evil of those who are wicked, and defend the righteous. For you look deep within the mind and heart, O righteous God. God is my shield, saving those whose hearts are true and right. God is an honest judge. He is angry with the wicked every day.

If a person does not repent, God will sharpen his sword; he will bend and string his bow. He will prepare his deadly weapons and shoot his flaming arrows. The wicked conceive evil; they are pregnant with trouble and give birth to lies. They dig a deep pit to trap others, then fall into it themselves. The trouble they make for others backfires on them. The violence they plan falls on their own heads.

I will thank the Lord because he is just; I will sing praise to the name of the Lord Most High.
__________

Morning Prayer

Lord our God: You are our Savior, hear the prayers of your suffering people –

+ For all who fear for their lives…. Lord, protect us.
+ For all who are innocent…. Lord, protect us.
+ For all who are helpless…. Lord, protect us.
+ For all who are hopeless…. Lord, protect us.

Lord our God: You rule from on high; judge the nations and do what’s right –

+ For you are a friend of the innocent…. Get angry, Lord!
+ For you are an enemy of the wicked…. Get angry, Lord!
+ For you punish the unrepentant…. Get angry, Lord!

Lord our God: You always do what’s right. Fill us with songs of praise, that we may worship you and glorify your Name. Amen.

Lord my God | You are my shelter and
Lord my God | I need your rescue from all who chase me down

If I have done wrong | If I am guilty | If I betrayed my friend
If I oppressed them | Without a reason | If my hands caused harm
Let them dishonor me | Let them dishonor me | Lord my God

Rise up O Lord in anger | Stand against the fury of my foe
Wake up O God bring justice | Gather nations; rule them from on high
Gather nations; rule them from on high

Defend the righteous as they stand secure in You
Bring an end | To the wicked schemes of wicked men
