Praying the Psalms: Tue, 10 Jul – Psalm 9 ~ the Lord reigns forever

Praying the Psalms

+ In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen!

Opening – (Northumbria Community)

One thing I have asked of the Lord, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life; to behold the beauty of the Lord and to seek Him in His temple.

Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ, King of endless glory.

Morning Reading: Psalm 9 (NLT)

I will praise you, Lord, with all my heart;
I will tell of all the marvelous things you have done.
I will be filled with joy because of you.
I will sing praises to your name, O Most High.

My enemies retreated; they staggered and died when you appeared. For you have judged in my favor; from your throne you have judged with fairness. You have rebuked the nations and destroyed the wicked; you have erased their names forever. The enemy is finished, in endless ruins; the cities you uprooted are now forgotten.

But the Lord reigns forever, executing judgment from his throne. He will judge the world with justice and rule the nations with fairness. The Lord is a shelter for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble. Those who know your name trust in you, for you, O Lord, do not abandon those who search for you.

Sing praises to the Lord who reigns in Jerusalem.  Tell the world about his unforgettable deeds. For he who avenges murder cares for the helpless. He does not ignore the cries of those who suffer.

Lord, have mercy on me. See how my enemies torment me. Snatch me back from the jaws of death. Save me so I can praise you publicly at Jerusalem’s gates, so I can rejoice that you have rescued me.

The nations have fallen into the pit they dug for others. Their own feet have been caught in the trap they set. The Lord is known for his justice. The wicked are trapped by their own deeds. [Quiet Interlude]

The wicked will go down to the grave. This is the fate of all the nations who ignore God. But the needy will not be ignored forever; the hopes of the poor will not always be crushed.

Arise, O Lord! Do not let mere mortals defy you!
Judge the nations! Make them tremble in fear, O Lord.
Let the nations know they are merely human.
__________

Morning Prayer

O Lord our God: Create in us a stillness – that we might worship you joyfully and wholeheartedly.

  • For you are our King – you remember the helpless and hear their cries….
  • For you are our King – you remember the suffering and hear their cries….
  • For you are Trustworthy – you rule in righteousness, faithfulness and truth….
  • For you are our Savior – you raise up those who have been brought low, near death….

I will tell of your wonderful deeds | With all my heart; all my heart
I’ll be glad, I’ll rejoice in you | Sing your praise for you are the Lord
The Lord most high | O most high

My enemies turn back; stumble and fall | Before you; before you
You uphold my right my cause | Before you; before you
You sit enthroned as the righteous judge
You rebuke the nations and the wicked
They are they are forgotten | Forever forgotten

The Lord reigns forever | Established on his throne
Rules the World in righteousness; fair in all he does
The Lord is a refuge | For all who are oppressed
A stronghold in times of trouble
And we trust in you | We trust in you

Sing the praises of our Lord | In Zion, in Zion
Tell the nations what he has done | In Zion, in Zion
You care for the helpless, the weak and the poor
The innocent avenged; those who suffer
Are not, are not ignored | They are not ignored

Grant me grace O Adonai | See my torment by my foes
You who raise me up from the gates of death
To the gates of Zion | Where I sing your praise, for you
Never forget the needy | Never forget the poor
Their hopes will not be crushed; not be lost forever

The Lord reigns forever | Established on his throne
Rules the World in righteousness; fair in all he does
The Lord is a refuge | For all who are oppressed
A stronghold in times of trouble
And we trust in you | We trust in you

Praying the Psalms: Mon, 09 Jul – Psalm 8 ~ majestic glory

Praying the Psalms

+ In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen!

Opening – (Northumbria Community)

One thing I have asked of the Lord, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life; to behold the beauty of the Lord and to seek Him in His temple.

Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ, King of endless glory.

Morning Reading: Psalm 8 (NLT)

O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth! Your glory is higher than the heavens. You have taught children and infants to tell of your strength, silencing your enemies and all who oppose you.

When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers—the moon and the stars you set in place—what are mere mortals that you should think about them, human beings that you should care for them? Yet you made them only a little lower than God and crowned them with glory and honor. You gave them charge of everything you made, putting all things under their authority—the flocks and the herds and all the wild animals, the birds in the sky, the fish in the sea, and everything that swims the ocean currents.

O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth!
__________

Morning Prayer

Lord our God: your majestic glory fills the earth –

  • Give us eyes to see the wonder and beauty of your creation….
  • Give us minds to recognize your sovereignty over human history….
  • Give us hearts to receive your redemption through your Son, Jesus Christ….

Lord our God: your majestic glory fills the heavens and yet, you have shown special favor to frail humanity –

  • You think about us and care for us….
  • You made us in your image, crowned with glory and honor….
  • You entrusted us with the care of your creation….

Lord our God: you amaze us everywhere we turn. Your majestic glory is all around us. Show us your glory!
__________

“Majestic (Psalm 8)” – The Shiyr Poets

O Lord our Lord | How majestic is your name in all the earth
O Lord our Lord | You have set your glory higher than the heavens

Through your children’s purest praise
You establish strength against your foes
To silence all your enemies; every avenger

When I consider the heavens | When I consider the work of your hands
The moon and the stars | Which You have set in place

What is man that you are mindful | Humankind that you care
Who are we that you consider us

You made us a little less than the gods
And clothed us with glory and grandeur

You make them rule | Over the work of your hands
Everything under their feet | Beasts of the field | Flocks of the air | Fish in the sea

Praying the Psalms: Sat, 07 Jul – Psalm 7 ~ Protect us!

Morning Reading: Psalm 7 (NLT)

I come to you for protection, O Lord my God. Save me from my persecutors—rescue me! If you don’t, they will maul me like a lion, tearing me to pieces with no one to rescue me.

O Lord my God, if I have done wrong or am guilty of injustice, if I have betrayed a friend or plundered my enemy without cause, then let my enemies capture me. Let them trample me into the ground and drag my honor in the dust.

Arise, O Lord, in anger! Stand up against the fury of my enemies! Wake up, my God, and bring justice! Gather the nations before you. Rule over them from on high.

The Lord judges the nations. Declare me righteous, O Lord, for I am innocent, O Most High!

End the evil of those who are wicked, and defend the righteous. For you look deep within the mind and heart, O righteous God. God is my shield, saving those whose hearts are true and right. God is an honest judge. He is angry with the wicked every day.

If a person does not repent, God will sharpen his sword; he will bend and string his bow. He will prepare his deadly weapons and shoot his flaming arrows. The wicked conceive evil; they are pregnant with trouble and give birth to lies. They dig a deep pit to trap others, then fall into it themselves. The trouble they make for others backfires on them. The violence they plan falls on their own heads.

I will thank the Lord because he is just; I will sing praise to the name of the Lord Most High.
__________

Morning Prayer

Lord our God: You are our Savior, hear the prayers of your suffering people –

+ For all who fear for their lives…. Lord, protect us.
+ For all who are innocent…. Lord, protect us.
+ For all who are helpless…. Lord, protect us.
+ For all who are hopeless…. Lord, protect us.

Lord our God: You rule from on high; judge the nations and do what’s right –

+ For you are a friend of the innocent…. Get angry, Lord!
+ For you are an enemy of the wicked…. Get angry, Lord!
+ For you punish the unrepentant…. Get angry, Lord!

Lord our God: You always do what’s right. Fill us with songs of praise, that we may worship you and glorify your Name. Amen.

“Lord My God” (Psalm 7) – The Shiyr Poets

Lord my God | You are my shelter and
Lord my God | I need your rescue from all who chase me down
Lord my God | They seek to tear me up and
Lord my God | Just like a lion prepared to take my life

If I have done wrong | If I am guilty | If I betrayed my friend
If I oppressed them | Without a reason | If my hands caused harm
Let them dishonor me | Let them dishonor me | Lord my God

Rise up O Lord in anger | Stand against the fury of my foe
Wake up O God bring justice | Gather nations; rule them from on high
Gather nations; rule them from on high

Bring an end | To the violence of the violent man
Defend the righteous as they stand secure in You
Bring an end | To the wicked schemes of wicked men
Yet unshaken the righteous endure in You

My shield the Most High | The God of glory | Savior of true hearts
God is a just judge | Displaying anger | To the wicked every day
The trouble they plan recoils | Crashing down on their own heads | Lord my God

I will give thanks to my God | Because of his unfailing righteousness
It’s time to sing God’s praises | Praise the holy name of God most high
I will give thanks to my God | Because of his unfailing righteousness
It’s time to sing God’s praises | Praise the holy name of God most high

Praying the Psalms: Fri, 06 Jul – Psalm 6 ~ Restore us!

Morning Reading: Psalm 6 (NLT)

O Lord, don’t rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your rage. Have compassion on me, Lord, for I am weak. Heal me, Lord, for my bones are in agony. I am sick at heart. How long, O Lord, until you restore me?

Return, O Lord, and rescue me. Save me because of your unfailing love. For the dead do not remember you. Who can praise you from the grave?

I am worn out from sobbing. All night I flood my bed with weeping, drenching it with my tears. My vision is blurred by grief; my eyes are worn out because of all my enemies.

Go away, all you who do evil, for the Lord has heard my weeping. The Lord has heard my plea; the Lord will answer my prayer.

May all my enemies be disgraced and terrified. May they suddenly turn back in shame.
__________

Morning Prayer:

Almighty God: Have mercy on us in this our time of trouble. We have sinned against you, and are undeserving of your restoration and loving-kindness. Our grief has been long and bitter; hear now the cries of our hearts –

+ For those in great danger – relieve our fears and anxieties…. Lord, restore us.
+ For those under your chastening hand – discipline us out of love…. Lord, restore us.
+ For those suffering physical and mental anguish – accept our repentance…. Lord, restore us.

Almighty God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
__________

“Restore Me (Psalm 6)” – The Shiyr Poets

Lord don’t rebuke me | Or in your wrath turn away | Have mercy on me Lord
In your anger | Don’t chasten me without cause | Your favor is my need Lord

I am faint feeling weak | I need healing | I need your relief
My bones are in agony | My soul is in anguish inside me

How long O Lord | How long O Lord | Till you restore me

Turn Lord deliver me | Save me because of your unfailing love |
Death holds no mention of your name | Who praises you from the grave

Lord I am worn out | I cannot weep anymore | Have mercy on me Lord
This constant groaning | this flood of tears on my bed | Your favor is my need Lord

Away from me all evil men | My God has heard my pleading for help
The Lord God has heard my cry | The Lord God will answer all my prayers
May all my enemies turn back in shame | May all my enemies turn back in shame
When you restore me | When you restore me When you restore me

Praying the Psalms: Thu, 05 Jul – Psalm 5 ~ Lead us!

Morning Reading: Psalm 5 (NLT)

O Lord, hear me as I pray; pay attention to my groaning. Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God, for I pray to no one but you. Listen to my voice in the morning, Lord. Each morning I bring my requests to you and wait expectantly.

O God, you take no pleasure in wickedness; you cannot tolerate the sins of the wicked. Therefore, the proud may not stand in your presence, for you hate all who do evil. You will destroy those who tell lies. The Lord detests murderers and deceivers.

Because of your unfailing love, I can enter your house; I will worship at your Temple with deepest awe. Lead me in the right path, O Lord, or my enemies will conquer me. Make your way plain for me to follow.

My enemies cannot speak a truthful word. Their deepest desire is to destroy others. Their talk is foul, like the stench from an open grave. Their tongues are filled with flattery. O God, declare them guilty. Let them be caught in their own traps. Drive them away because of their many sins, for they have rebelled against you.

But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them sing joyful praises forever. Spread your protection over them, that all who love your name may be filled with joy. For you bless the godly, O Lord; you surround them with your shield of love.
__________

Morning Prayer:

Lord God: To you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid. Hear our cries for help – for you alone are our King and our God; you alone are our path to peace.

+ For the wicked and evildoers, especially those who persecute your people – expose them and put them to shame.
+ For the liars and deceivers, especially those who defame your people – expose them and punish them.
+ For those who have rejected you – hold them accountable for their sins, and declare them guilty.

Lord God: You are our ever-present help in times of trouble. Hear our cries for help – for your faithfulness and loving-kindness is new every morning.

+ For your people, guide us along the right path – the path of Life.
+ For your people, show us the right path – through the Light of your Word.
+ For your people, lead us us along the right path – that we may glorify your Name.

Lord God: You are our refuge, we trust you with our lives. Cover us with your protection of loving-kindness – that we may be filled with joy and sing your praises, now and forever. Amen.
