From Psalms: Psalm 102 Poor Bishop Hooper

hear my prayer god and let my cry
of help come to you do not hide
listen closely to me in the day of my distress
my days consumed in smoke my bones they like a furnace

indeed i forget to eat
i can’t sleep my bones cling to my flesh
and mingled with my drink is my weeping
for i have eaten ashes like my bread

my days are like a shadow i wither like the grass
but you abide forever arise in compassion
be gracious now to zion the appointed time has come
your servants surely pity her find pleasure in her stones

indeed i forget to eat
i can’t sleep my bones cling to my flesh
and mingled with my drink is my weeping
for i have eaten ashes like my bread

oh let it be written for those to come
a people yet created may praise the lord
he looked down from his heights he gazed to earth from heaven
to hear the prisoner’s cry set free those doomed to die
so that they might praise him

long ago you made the earth the heavens are your work
even they will perish lord but you will endure
you’ll change them like a garment as robes they’ll pass away
but you are the same but you are the same

Job Speaks: God Has Attacked Me Without Cause

6:1 Then Job replied ⌞to his friends⌟,

“If only my grief could be weighed,
if only my misery could be laid on the scales with it,
then they would be heavier than the sand of the seas.
I spoke carelessly
because the arrows of the Almighty ⌞have found their target⌟ in me,
and my spirit is drinking their poison.
God’s terrors line up in battle against me.

“Does a wild donkey bray when it’s ⌞eating⌟ grass,
or does an ox make a sound over its hay?
Is tasteless food eaten without salt,
or is there any flavor in the white of an egg?
I refuse to touch such things.
They are disgusting to me.

“How I wish that my prayer would be answered—
that God would give me what I’m hoping for,
that God would ⌞finally⌟ be willing to crush me,
that he would reach out to cut me off.
Then I would still have comfort.
I would be happy despite my endless pain,
because I have not rejected the words of the Holy One.
What strength do I have ⌞left⌟ that I can go on hoping?
What goal do I have that I would want to prolong my life?
Do I have the strength of rocks?
Does my body have the strength of bronze?
Am I not completely helpless?
Haven’t my skills been taken away from me?

Many People Are Cured

3:7 Jesus left with his disciples for the Sea of Galilee. A large crowd from Galilee, Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, and from across the Jordan River, and from around Tyre and Sidon followed him. They came to him because they had heard about everything he was doing. Jesus told his disciples to have a boat ready so that the crowd would not crush him. He had cured so many that everyone with a disease rushed up to him in order to touch him. Whenever people with evil spirits saw him, they would fall down in front of him and shout, “You are the Son of God!” He gave them orders not to tell people who he was.

From Psalms: Psalm 102: Lord, Hear My Prayer | Katy Snow / Gregory Wilbur

Lord, hear my prayer, and let my cry
Have ready access unto Thee;
When in distress to Thee I fly,
O hide not Thou Thy face from me.
Attend, O Lord, to my desire,
O haste to answer when I pray;
For grief consumes my strength like fire,
My days as smoke pass swift away.

My heart is withered like the grass,
And I forget my daily bread;
In lonely grief my days I pass
And sad my thoughts upon my bed.
My foes reproach me all the day,
My drink is tears, my bread is grief,
For in Thy wrath I pine away,
My days are like a fading leaf.

But Thou, Jehovah, shalt endure,
Thy throne forever is the same;
And to all generations sure
Shall be Thy great memorial name.
The time for Zion’s help is near,
The time appointed in Thy love;
O let Thy gracious aid appear,
Look Thou in mercy from above.

The Lord, exalted on His throne,
Looked down from Heav’n with pitying eye
To still the lowly captive’s moan
And save His people doomed to die.
All men in Zion shall declare
His gracious name with one accord,
When kings and nations gather there
To serve and worship God the Lord.

Elisha Helps a Shunem Woman Get Her Land Back

8:1 Elisha had told the woman whose son he had brought back to life, “Go away with your family. Stay wherever you can. The Lord has decided to send a famine on this country, and it will last seven years.”

The woman did what the man of God told her. She and her family went to live in Philistine territory for seven years. At the end of seven years, the woman came home from Philistine territory but left again to make an appeal to the king about her house and land.

The king was talking to Gehazi, the servant of the man of God. He said, “Please tell me about all the great things Elisha has done.” While Gehazi was telling the king how Elisha brought a dead child back to life, the mother ⌞came to⌟ make an appeal to the king about her house and land.

Gehazi said, “Your Majesty, this is the woman, and this is her son whom Elisha brought back to life.”

When the king asked the woman ⌞about this⌟, she told him the story. So the king assigned to her an attendant to whom he said, “Restore all that is hers, including whatever her property produced from the day she left the country until now.”

Paul and Barnabas Disagree

15:36 After a while Paul said to Barnabas, “Let’s go back to every city where we spread the Lord’s word. We’ll visit the believers to see how they’re doing.”

Barnabas wanted to take John Mark along. However, Paul didn’t think it was right to take a person like him along. John Mark had deserted them in Pamphylia and had not gone with them to work. Paul and Barnabas disagreed so sharply that they parted ways. Barnabas took Mark with him and sailed to the island of Cyprus. Paul chose Silas and left after the believers entrusted him to the Lord’s care.

Paul went through the provinces of Syria and Cilicia and strengthened the churches.

Elisha Brings a Shunem Woman’s Son Back to Life

4:8 One day Elisha was traveling through Shunem, where a rich woman lived. She had invited him to eat ⌞with her⌟. So whenever he was in the area, he stopped in to eat.

She told her husband, “I know he’s a holy man of God. And he regularly travels past our house. Let’s make a small room on the roof and put a bed, table, chair, and lamp stand there for him. He can stay there whenever he comes to visit us.”

One day he came ⌞to their house⌟, went into the upstairs room, and rested there. He told his servant Gehazi, “Call this Shunem woman.”

Gehazi called her, and she stood in front of him. Elisha said to Gehazi, “Ask her what we can do for her, since she has gone to a lot of trouble for us. Maybe she would like us to speak to the king or the commander of the army for her.”

She answered, “I’m already living among my own people.”

“What should we do for her?” Elisha asked.

Gehazi answered, “Well, she has no son, and her husband is old.”

Elisha said, “Call her.” So Gehazi called her, and she stood in the doorway. Elisha said, “At this time next spring, you will hold a baby boy in your arms.”

She answered, “Don’t say that, sir. Don’t lie to me. You’re a man of God.”

But the woman became pregnant and had a son at that time next year, as Elisha had told her….

4:32 When Elisha came to the house, the dead boy was lying on Elisha’s bed. He went into the room, closed the door, and prayed to the Lord. Then he lay on the boy, putting his mouth on the boy’s mouth, his eyes on the boy’s eyes, his hands on the boy’s hands. He crouched over the boy’s body, and it became warm. Elisha got up, walked across the room and came back, and then got back on the bed and crouched over him. The boy sneezed seven times and opened his eyes. Elisha called Gehazi and said, “Call the Shunem woman.” Gehazi called her. When she came to him, he said, “Take your son.”

Then she immediately bowed at his feet. She took her son and left.

Paul and Barnabas in Iconium

14:1 The same thing happened in the city of Iconium. Paul and Barnabas went into the synagogue and spoke in such a way that a large crowd of Jews and Greeks believed. But the Jews who refused to believe stirred up some people who were not Jewish and poisoned their minds against the believers. Paul and Barnabas stayed in the city of Iconium for a long time. They spoke boldly about the Lord, who confirmed their message about his good will  by having them perform miracles and do amazing things. But the people of Iconium were divided. Some were for the Jews, while others were for the apostles.

In the meantime, Paul and Barnabas found out that the non-Jewish people and the Jewish people with their rulers planned to attack them and stone them to death. So they escaped to Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and to the surrounding territory. They spread the Good News there.

Sing Praise to God Who Reigns Above | Joslin Grove Choral Society

1 Sing praise to God who reigns above,
the God of all creation,
the God of power, the God of love,
the God of our salvation.
With healing balm my soul is filled
and every faithless murmur stilled:
To God all praise and glory.

2 The Lord is never far away,
but through all grief distressing,
an ever present help and stay,
our peace and joy and blessing.
As with a mother’s tender hand,
He gently leads the chosen band:
To God all praise and glory.

3 Thus all my toilsome way along,
I sing aloud His praises,
that earth may hear the grateful song
my voice unwearied raises.
Be joyful in the Lord, my heart,
both soul and body bear your part:
To God all praise and glory.

From the Old Testament: Isaiah 40:21-31 (GW)

40:21 Don’t you know?
Haven’t you heard?
Haven’t you been told from the beginning?
Don’t you understand the foundations of the earth?
God is enthroned above the earth,
and those who live on it are like grasshoppers.

He stretches out the sky like a canopy
and spreads it out like a tent to live in.
He makes rulers unimportant
and makes earthly judges worth nothing.
They have hardly been planted.
They have hardly been sown.
They have hardly taken root in the ground.
Then he blows on them and they wither,
and a windstorm sweeps them away like straw.

“To whom, then, can you compare me?
Who is my equal?” asks the Holy One.

Look at the sky and see.
Who created these things?
Who brings out the stars one by one?
He calls them all by name.
Because of the greatness of his might and the strength of his power,
not one of them is missing.

Jacob, why do you complain?
Israel, why do you say,
“My way is hidden from the Lord,
and my rights are ignored by my God”?
Don’t you know?
Haven’t you heard?
The eternal God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth,
doesn’t grow tired or become weary.
His understanding is beyond reach.

He gives strength to those who grow tired
and increases the strength of those who are weak.
Even young people grow tired and become weary,
and young men will stumble and fall.
Yet, the strength of those who wait with hope in the Lord
will be renewed.
They will soar on wings like eagles.
They will run and won’t become weary.
They will walk and won’t grow tired.

9:16 If I spread the Good News, I have nothing to brag about because I have an obligation to do this. How horrible it will be for me if I don’t spread the Good News! If I spread the Good News willingly, I’ll have a reward. But if I spread the Good News unwillingly, I’m ⌞only⌟ doing what I’ve been entrusted to do.

So what is my reward? It is to spread the Good News free of charge. In that way I won’t use the rights that belong to those who spread the Good News.

Paul’s Work as an Apostle

9:19 Although I’m free from all people, I have made myself a slave for all people to win more of them. I became Jewish for Jewish people. I became subject to the laws in Moses’ Teachings for those who are subject to those laws. I did this to win them even though I’m not subject to Moses’ Teachings. I became like a person who does not have Moses’ Teachings for those who don’t have those teachings. I did this to win them even though I have God’s teachings. I’m really subject to Christ’s teachings. I became like a person weak in faith to win those who are weak in faith. I have become everything to everyone in order to save at least some of them. I do all this for the sake of the Good News in order to share what it offers.

Jesus Cures Simon’s Mother-in-Law and Many Others

1:29 After they left the synagogue, they went directly to the house of Simon and Andrew. James and John went with them. Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever. The first thing they did was to tell Jesus about her. Jesus went to her, took her hand, and helped her get up. The fever went away, and she prepared a meal for them.

In the evening, when the sun had set, people brought to him everyone who was sick and those possessed by demons. The whole city had gathered at his door. He cured many who were sick with various diseases and forced many demons out of people. However, he would not allow the demons to speak. After all, they knew who he was.

Spreading the Good News in Galilee

1:35 In the morning, long before sunrise, Jesus went to a place where he could be alone to pray. Simon and his friends searched for him. When they found him, they told him, “Everyone is looking for you.”

Jesus said to them, “Let’s go somewhere else, to the small towns that are nearby. I have to spread ⌞the Good News⌟ in them also. This is why I have come.”

So he went to spread ⌞the Good News⌟ in the synagogues all over Galilee, and he forced demons out of people.

Babylon’s Idols Will Go into Captivity

46:1 The god Bel bows down; the god Nebo stoops low.
Their statues are seated on animals and cattle.
The gods that you carry are burdens, a load for weary people.
These gods stoop low and bow down together.
They aren’t able to escape with heavy loads.
They go away into captivity.

Listen to me, descendants of Jacob,
the few people left of the nation of Israel.
I’ve carried you since your birth.
I’ve taken care of you from the time you were born.
Even when you’re old, I’ll take care of you.
Even when your hair turns gray, I’ll support you.
I made you and will continue to care for you.
I’ll support you and save you.

To whom will you compare me and make me equal?
To whom will you compare me so that we can be alike?

People pour gold out of their bags and weigh silver on scales.
They hire a goldsmith. He makes it into a god.
They bow down and worship it.
They lift it on their shoulders and carry it.
They set the idol in its place, and it stands there.
It doesn’t move from its place.
If they cry to it for help, it can’t answer.
It can’t rescue them from their distress.

Remember this, and take courage.
Recall your rebellious acts.
Remember the first events,
because I am God, and there is no other.
I am God, and there’s no one like me.
From the beginning I revealed the end.
From long ago I told you things that had not yet happened, saying,
“My plan will stand, and I’ll do everything I intended to do.”
I will call a bird of prey from the east.
I will call someone for my plan from a faraway land.
I have spoken, and I will bring it about.
I have planned it, and I will do it.
Listen to me, you stubborn people who are far from being righteous.
I’ll bring my righteousness near; it isn’t far away.
My salvation will not be delayed.
I’ll provide salvation for Zion
and bring my glory to Israel.

Jesus Heals on the Day of Rest—a Holy Day

12:9 Jesus moved on from there and went into a synagogue. A man with a paralyzed hand was there. The people asked Jesus whether it was right to heal on a day of rest—a holy day, so that they could accuse him of doing something wrong.

Jesus said to them, “Suppose one of you has a sheep. If it falls into a pit on a day of rest—a holy day, wouldn’t you take hold of it and lift it out? Certainly, a human is more valuable than a sheep! So it is right to do good on the day of rest—a holy day.”

Then he said to the man, “Hold out your hand.” The man held it out, and it became normal again, as healthy as the other.

The Pharisees left and plotted to kill Jesus.
