After Pentecost | Monday 14 Aug 2023
+ In the Name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Opening:
Almighty God, give us
the increase of faith, hope, and love;
and, that we may obtain what you have promised,
make us love what you command;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you
and the Holy Spirit, one God,
for ever and ever. Amen.
“So you see, the Lord knows how
to rescue godly people from their trials,
even while keeping the wicked under punishment
until the day of final judgment.”
(2 Peter 2:9)

From Psalms: Psalm 28 – (Blessed Be the Lord) (feat. Benjamin Ady) – The Psalms Project
To You, O Lord, I call
Do not be deaf to me, my Rock
Lest if You be silent to me
I become like those who go down to the pit
Hear the voice of my plea for mercy
When I cry to You for help
When I lift my hands toward Your holy place
Draw me not away with the wicked
With the workers of evil who speak peace to their neighbors
While evil is in their hearts
Give them according to their works, the evil of their deeds
According to the work of their hands
Render unto them their just and due reward
For they do not regard the wonders of the Lord
Nor the work of His hands
He will tear them down and build them up no more
He will tear them down and build them up no more
No more
Blessed be the Lord
He has heard the voice of my plea for mercy
He is my strength and shield
My heart trusts in Him, and I am helped
My heart exults and with my song I give thanks to Him
My heart exults and with my song I give thanks to Him
The Lord is the strength of His people
He is the saving refuge of His anointed
Save Your people! Bless Your children!
Be their shepherd and carry them forever

OT Reading: Genesis 37:29-36 (NLT)
37:29 Some time later, Reuben returned to get Joseph out of the cistern. When he discovered that Joseph was missing, he tore his clothes in grief. Then he went back to his brothers and lamented, “The boy is gone! What will I do now?”
Then the brothers killed a young goat and dipped Joseph’s robe in its blood. They sent the beautiful robe to their father with this message: “Look at what we found. Doesn’t this robe belong to your son?”
Their father recognized it immediately. “Yes,” he said, “it is my son’s robe. A wild animal must have eaten him. Joseph has clearly been torn to pieces!” Then Jacob tore his clothes and dressed himself in burlap. He mourned deeply for his son for a long time.
His family all tried to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. “I will go to my grave mourning for my son,” he would say, and then he would weep.
Meanwhile, the Midianite traders arrived in Egypt, where they sold Joseph to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt. Potiphar was captain of the palace guard.

NT Reading: 2 Peter 2:4-10 (NLT)
2:4 For God did not spare even the angels who sinned. He threw them into hell, in gloomy pits of darkness, where they are being held until the day of judgment. And God did not spare the ancient world—except for Noah and the seven others in his family. Noah warned the world of God’s righteous judgment. So God protected Noah when he destroyed the world of ungodly people with a vast flood. Later, God condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah and turned them into heaps of ashes. He made them an example of what will happen to ungodly people. But God also rescued Lot out of Sodom because he was a righteous man who was sick of the shameful immorality of the wicked people around him. Yes, Lot was a righteous man who was tormented in his soul by the wickedness he saw and heard day after day. So you see, the Lord knows how to rescue godly people from their trials, even while keeping the wicked under punishment until the day of final judgment. He is especially hard on those who follow their own twisted sexual desire, and who despise authority.
These people are proud and arrogant, daring even to scoff at supernatural beings without so much as trembling.

+ O God, our heavenly Father, you manifested your love by sending your only-begotten Son into the world, that all might live through him: Pour out your Spirit on your Church, that we may fulfill his command to preach the Gospel to all people. Send forth laborers into your harvest; defend them in all dangers and temptations; and hasten the time when the fullness of the Gentiles shall be gathered in, and faithful Israel shall be saved; through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
+ Almighty God our Savior: Grant that our hearts may ache for a lost and broken world. May your Holy Spirit work through our words, deeds, and prayers, that the lost may be found and the dead made alive, and that all your redeemed may rejoice around your throne; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
