Wisdom as Lifegiver

8:32 “Now, sons, listen to me.
Blessed are those who follow my ways.
Listen to discipline, and become wise.
Do not leave my ways.
Blessed is the person who listens to me,
watches at my door day after day,
and waits by my doorposts.
Whoever finds me finds life
and obtains favor from the Lord.
Whoever sins against me harms himself.
All those who hate me love death.”

Wisdom Hosts a Banquet

9:1 Wisdom has built her house.
She has carved out her seven pillars.
She has prepared her meat.
She has mixed her wine.
She has set her table.
She has sent out her servant girls.
She calls from the highest places in the city,
“Whoever is gullible turn in here!”

She says to a person without sense,
“Come, eat my bread,
and drink the wine I have mixed.
Stop being gullible and live.
Start traveling the road to understanding.”

NT Reading: Hebrews 11:29-12:2 (GW

11:29 Faith caused the people to go through the Red Sea as if it were dry land. The Egyptians also tried this, but they drowned.

Faith caused the walls of Jericho to fall after the Israelites marched around them for seven days.

Faith led the prostitute Rahab to welcome the spies as friends. She was not killed with those who refused to obey God.

What more should I say? I don’t have enough time to tell you about Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, and the prophets. Through faith they conquered kingdoms, did what God approved, and received what God had promised. They shut the mouths of lions, put out raging fires, and escaped death. They found strength when they were weak. They were powerful in battle and defeated other armies. Women received their loved ones back from the dead. Other believers were brutally tortured but refused to be released so that they might gain eternal life. Some were made fun of and whipped, and some were chained and put in prison. Some were stoned to death, sawed in half, and killed with swords. Some wore the skins of sheep and goats. Some were poor, abused, and mistreated. The world didn’t deserve these good people. Some wandered around in deserts and mountains and lived in caves and holes in the ground.

All these people were known for their faith, but none of them received what God had promised. God planned to give us something very special so that we would gain eternal life with them.

Faith Directs Our Lives

12:1 Since we are surrounded by so many examples ⌞of faith⌟, we must get rid of everything that slows us down, especially sin that distracts us. We must run the race that lies ahead of us and never give up. We must focus on Jesus, the source and goal of our faith. He saw the joy ahead of him, so he endured death on the cross and ignored the disgrace it brought him. Now he holds the honored position—the one next to God the Father on the heavenly throne.

+ Most loving Father, you will us to give thanks for all things, to dread nothing but the loss of you, and to cast all our care on the One who cares for us. Preserve us from faithless fears and worldly anxieties, and grant that no clouds of this mortal life may hide from us the light of that love which is immortal, and which you have manifested unto us in your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. He will fill Zion with justice and righteousness.

The riches of salvation are wisdom and knowledge.
The fear of the Lord is ⌞your⌟ treasure.

Heroes cry in the streets.
Messengers of peace cry bitterly.
Highways are deserted.

The Faith of a Canaanite Woman

15:21 Jesus left that place and went to the region of Tyre and Sidon.

A Canaanite woman from that territory came ⌞to him⌟ and began to shout, “Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is tormented by a demon.”

But he did not answer her at all. Then his disciples came to him and urged him, “Send her away. She keeps shouting behind us.”

Jesus responded, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the nation of Israel.”

She came to him, bowed down, and said, “Lord, help me!”

Jesus replied, “It’s not right to take the children’s food and throw it to the dogs.”

She said, “You’re right, Lord. But even the dogs eat scraps that fall from their masters’ tables.”

Then Jesus answered her, “Woman, you have strong faith! What you wanted will be done for you.” At that moment her daughter was cured.

Jesus moved on from there and went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up a mountain and sat there.

A large crowd came to him, bringing with them the lame, blind, disabled, those unable to talk, and many others. They laid them at his feet, and he cured them. The crowd was amazed to see mute people talking, the disabled cured, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. So they praised the God of Israel.

The Lord Will Pour Out His Spirit and Bring Peace

32:1 A king will rule with fairness,
and officials will rule with justice.

Then each ruler will be like a shelter from the wind
and a hiding place from the rain.
They will be like streams on parched ground
and the shade of a large rock in a weary land.

Then the vision of those who can see won’t be blurred,
and the ears of those who can hear will pay attention.

Then those who are reckless will begin to understand,
and those who stutter will speak quickly and clearly.

Godless fools will no longer be called nobles,
nor will scoundrels be considered gentlemen.

Godless fools speak foolishness,
and their minds plan evil
in order to do ungodly things.
They speak falsely about the Lord.
They let people go hungry
and withhold water from thirsty people.

The tricks of scoundrels are evil.
They devise wicked plans in order to ruin poor people with lies,
even when needy people plead for justice.

But honorable people act honorably
and stand firm for what is honorable.

NT Reading: Romans 2:12-16 (GW

2:12 Here’s the reason: Whoever sins without having the laws in Moses’ Teachings will still be condemned to destruction. And whoever has these laws from God and sins will still be judged by them. People who merely listen to the laws in Moses’ Teachings don’t have God’s approval. Rather, people who do what those laws demand will have God’s approval.

God Will Judge People Who Are Not Jewish

2:14 For example, whenever non-Jews who don’t have the laws in Moses’ Teachings do by nature the things that those laws contain, they are a law to themselves even though they don’t have any of those laws. They show that some requirements found in Moses’ Teachings are written in their hearts. Their consciences speak to them. Their thoughts accuse them on one occasion and defend them on another. This happens as they face the day when God, through Christ Jesus, will judge people’s secret thoughts. He will use the Good News that I am spreading to make that judgment.

Your hearts will be happy like someone going out with a flute
on the way to the Lord’s mountain, to the rock of Israel.

The Lord will make his majestic voice heard.
He will come down with all his might,
with furious anger,
with fire storms, windstorms, rainstorms, and hailstones.
At the sound of the Lord, the people of Assyria will be shattered.
He will strike them with his rod.

To the sound of tambourines and lyres, the Lord will pound on them.
He will fight them in battle, swinging his fists.

Topheth was prepared long ago.

The Lord’s breath will be like a flood of burning sulfur,

NT Reading: Romans 2:1-11 (GW)

God Will Judge Everyone

2:1 No matter who you are, if you judge anyone, you have no excuse. When you judge another person, you condemn yourself, since you, the judge, do the same things. We know that God’s judgment is right when he condemns people for doing these things. When you judge people for doing these things but then do them yourself, do you think you will escape God’s judgment? Do you have contempt for God, who is very kind to you, puts up with you, and deals patiently with you? Don’t you realize that it is God’s kindness that is trying to lead you to him and change the way you think and act?

Since you are stubborn and don’t want to change the way you think and act, you are adding to the anger that God will have against you on that day when God vents his anger. At that time God will reveal that his decisions are fair. He will pay all people back for what they have done. He will give everlasting life to those who search for glory, honor, and immortality by persisting in doing what is good. But he will bring anger and fury on those who, in selfish pride, refuse to believe the truth and who follow what is wrong. There will be suffering and distress for every person who does evil, for Jews first and Greeks as well. But there will be glory, honor, and peace for every person who does what is good, for Jews first and Greeks as well. God does not play favorites.

O Praise the Lord, give thanks, for the Lord our God is good
God’s steadfast love endures fore’er; who can declare your works?
Blessed are the ones who justice seek; who walk in righteous paths
And bless the God who brought them out from the banks of the Nile

For God saved them and delivered them from slavery’s cruel hand
The Lord rebuked the Red Sea, and it became dry land
Led them through the deep sea waters, as it were desert sand
And the waters covered over their foes who followed from behind

Then they exchanged God’s glory for an ox in golden cast
They forgot that God their Savior had done great things for them
No longer slaves in Egypt, their foes were buried at sea
Yet they did not trust God to lead them out into the promised land

Though many a time God saved them, their rebellion never ceased
God’s promise they’d forgotten, yet God did hear their cry
God remembered the holy covenant, and showed compassion and love
May we ever bless God’s holy name, blessed be the Lord, Amen

OT Reading: Deuteronomy 4:21-40  (GW)

4:21 The Lord was angry with me because of you. So the Lord your God took an oath that I wouldn’t cross the Jordan River and enter the good land he is giving you as your property. I’m going to die in this land and not cross the Jordan River, but you’re going to go across and take possession of that good land. Be careful that you don’t forget the promise that the Lord your God made to you. Don’t make your own carved idols or statues that represent anything the Lord your God has forbidden. The Lord your God is a raging fire, a God who does not tolerate rivals.

Even when you have children and grandchildren and have grown old in that land, don’t become corrupt and make carved idols or statues that represent anything. I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you today: If you do this thing that the Lord your God considers evil, making him furious, you will quickly disappear from the land you’re going to possess on the other side of the Jordan River. You won’t live very long there. You’ll be completely wiped out. The Lord will scatter you among the people of the world, and only a few of you will be left among the nations where the Lord will force you to live. There you will worship wooden and stone gods made by human hands. These gods can’t see, hear, eat, or smell.

But if you look for the Lord your God when you are among those nations, you will find him whenever you search for him with all your heart and with all your soul. When you’re in distress and all these things happen to you, then you will finally come back to the Lord your God and obey him. The Lord your God is a merciful God. He will not abandon you, destroy you, or forget the promise to your ancestors that he swore he would keep.

Search the distant past, long before your time. Start from the very day God created people on earth. Search from one end of heaven to the other. Has anything as great as this ever happened before, or has anything like it ever been heard of? Have any ⌞other⌟ people ever heard God speak from a fire and lived? You did! Or has any god ever tried to come and take one nation away from another for himself? The Lord your God used his mighty hand and powerful arm to do this for you in Egypt. He did this using plagues, miraculous signs, amazing things, and war. He did his great and awe-inspiring deeds in front of you.

You were shown these things so that you would know that the Lord is God. There is no other god. He let you hear his voice from heaven so that he could instruct you. He showed you his great fire on earth, and you heard him speak from the column of fire. Because he loved your ancestors and chose their descendants, he was with you as he brought you out of Egypt by his great power. He forced nations greater and stronger than you out of your way to bring you into their land and give it to you. This land is your own possession today.

Remember today, and never forget that the Lord is God in heaven above and here on earth. There is no other god. Obey his laws and commands which I’m giving you today. Then things will go well for you and your descendants. You will live for a long time in the land. The Lord your God is giving you the land for as long as you live.

No One Like Our God ~ Lincoln Brewster (music meets heaven)

__________

NT Reading: Mark 7:9-23 (GW)

7:9 He added, “You have no trouble rejecting the commandments of God in order to keep your own traditions! For example, Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’ and ‘Whoever curses father or mother must be put to death.’ But you say, ‘If a person tells his father or mother that whatever he might have used to help them is corban (that is, an offering to God), he no longer has to do anything for his father or mother.’ Because of your traditions you have destroyed the authority of God’s word. And you do many other things like that.”

Then he called the crowd again and said to them, “Listen to me, all of you, and try to understand! Nothing that goes into a person from the outside can make him unclean. It’s what comes out of a person that makes him unclean. Let the person who has ears listen!”

When he had left the people and gone home, his disciples asked him about this illustration.

Jesus said to them, “Don’t you understand? Don’t you know that whatever goes into a person from the outside can’t make him unclean? It doesn’t go into his thoughts but into his stomach and then into a toilet.” (By saying this, Jesus declared all foods acceptable.) He continued, “It’s what comes out of a person that makes him unclean. Evil thoughts, sexual sins, stealing, murder, adultery, greed, wickedness, cheating, shameless lust, envy, cursing, arrogance, and foolishness come from within a person. All these evils come from within and make a person unclean.”
