FRC: How would the Pope vote? I have no idea, however . . . .
Peanut Gallery: It’s always a tenuous exercise when a member of one religious group presumes to explain the religious tenets of another religious group. Nevertheless, Tom McClusky (FRC) has ventured into this minefield.
His purpose is to prep Catholics for tonight’s Vice-Presidential Debate by providing a quasi-Catholic scorecard to rate the candidates. His effort is timely and to the point – since both vice-presidential candidates self-identify as Roman Catholics.

For the first time in American history, two Catholic vice presidential candidates are squaring off for America’s second highest office and while both Vice President Joe Biden and Representative Paul Ryan cite their shared faith in informing their positions, on many issues they could not be further apart.

The Catholic vote may decide this election.
Catholics swung to Obama decisively four years ago. A Pew poll shows they’ve swung decisively back toward Republicans nationally. Their party platform has generated a strong rebuke from Bishop Thomas Paprocki of the Springfield, Illinois diocese. He talked about the whole “God” controversy and His original exclusion from their platform:
“After outcries of protest from outside as well as within the Democratic Party, the sentence with the same reference to God used in 2008 was restored to read, “We need a government that stands up for the hopes, values and interests of working people, and gives everyone willing to work hard the chance to make the most of their God-given potential.”
Before anyone relaxes and concludes that all is well now that the Democratic Party Platform contains a single passing reference to God, the way that this was done should…

Need a 2012 Voter Guide? Take your pick –
Peanut Gallery – In America, churches can’t force anyone to do anything. Freedom of Religion includes freedom from government interference, freedom of religious choice… and freedom of concsience.
That said – pastors and churches have every right to proclaim the Gospel Truth as they see it. They might be right, they might be wrong – but they are free to say what they want to from the pulpit as long as it conforms to the standards of the particular church or association of churches to which they belong.
Parishoners can agree or disagree and are free to vote with their money and/or their feet. We live in America folks – not Saudi Arabia.
So… here are a selection of voter guides for you to ponder. They are all pro-life, so don’t bother looking for a counter argument here. But they come from different sources and therefore have differing degrees of authority depending on your point of view. This list is not exhaustive and I welcome your pro-life additions that others might be able to use. But it’s a start… and November 6th is only a few weeks away.
