From Psalms: Psalm 34 – Poor Bishop Hooper

no shadow of shame will darken our faces
we will be radiant radiant with joy
in desperation i prayed and the lord he listened
would you see could you taste taste and see that the lord is good
taste and see that the lord is good

come my children and listen
listen to me
for i will teach you
the fear of the lord is a perfectly good thing

the eyes of the lord watch over the righteous
and his ears are turned to your very lips
the lord he is close so very close to the broken hearted
and he rescues those who are crushed in their spirits

come my children and listen
listen to me
for i will teach you
the fear of the lord is a perfectly good thing

Job Continues: You Are Not Listening to Me

13:1 “My eye has certainly seen all of this!
My ear has heard and understood it.
After all, I know it as well as you do.
I am not inferior to you.
However, I want to speak to the Almighty,
and I wish to argue my case in front of God.
But you are smearing me with lies.
All of you are worthless physicians.
I wish you would keep silent.
For you, that would be wisdom.
Please listen to my argument,
and pay attention to my plea.

Your Wisdom Misrepresents God

13:7 “Will you talk wickedly for God
and talk deceitfully on his behalf?
Will you favor him
⌞as⌟ if you were arguing in court on God’s behalf?
Will it go well when he cross-examines you?
Will you try to trick him as one mortal tricks another?
Will he really defend you
if you secretly favor ⌞him⌟?
Doesn’t his majesty terrify you?
Doesn’t the fear of him fall upon you?
“Your recollections are worthless proverbs.
Your answers are absolutely useless.
Be quiet, because I want to speak.
Let whatever may happen to me ⌞happen⌟!
I am biting off more than I can chew
and taking my life in my own hands.
If God would kill me, I would have no hope ⌞left⌟.
Nevertheless, I will defend my behavior to his face.
This also will be my salvation
because no godless person could face him.

Job Speaks to God
13:17 “Listen carefully to my words.
Hear my declaration.
I have prepared my case.
I know that I will be declared righteous.
Who can make a case against me?
If someone could, I’d be silent and die.

NT Reading: John 4:7-26 (GW)

4:7 A Samaritan woman went to get some water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink of water.” (His disciples had gone into the city to buy some food.)

The Samaritan woman asked him, “How can a Jewish man like you ask a Samaritan woman like me for a drink of water?” (Jews, of course, don’t associate with Samaritans.)

Jesus replied to her, “If you only knew what God’s gift is and who is asking you for a drink, you would have asked him for a drink. He would have given you living water.”

The woman said to him, “Sir, you don’t have anything to use to get water, and the well is deep. So where are you going to get this living water? You’re not more important than our ancestor Jacob, are you? He gave us this well. He and his sons and his animals drank water from it.”

Jesus answered her, “Everyone who drinks this water will become thirsty again. But those who drink the water that I will give them will never become thirsty again. In fact, the water I will give them will become in them a spring that gushes up to eternal life.”

The woman told Jesus, “Sir, give me this water! Then I won’t get thirsty or have to come here to get water.”

Jesus told her, “Go to your husband, and bring him here.”

The woman replied, “I don’t have a husband.”

Jesus told her, “You’re right when you say that you don’t have a husband. You’ve had five husbands, and the man you have now isn’t your husband. You’ve told the truth.”

The woman said to Jesus, “I see that you’re a prophet! Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain. But you Jews say that people must worship in Jerusalem.”

Jesus told her, “Believe me. A time is coming when you Samaritans won’t be worshiping the Father on this mountain or in Jerusalem. You don’t know what you’re worshiping. We ⌞Jews⌟ know what we’re worshiping, because salvation comes from the Jews. Indeed, the time is coming, and it is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth. The Father is looking for people like that to worship him. God is a spirit. Those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”

The woman said to him, “I know that the Messiah is coming. When he comes, he will tell us everything.” (Messiah is the one called Christ.)

Jesus told her, “I am he, and I am speaking to you now.”

+ O God, the light of the minds that know you, the life of the souls that love you, and the strength of the wills that serve you: Help us so to know you that we may truly love you, and so to love you that we may fully serve you, whom to serve is perfect freedom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

+ Almighty God our Savior, you desire that none should perish, and you have taught us through your Son that there is great joy in heaven over every sinner who repents: Grant that our hearts may ache for a lost and broken world. May your Holy Spirit work through our words, deeds, and prayers, that the lost may be found and the dead made alive, and that all your redeemed may rejoice around your throne; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

+ Sovereign Lord: We pray for the peace of Jerusalem:

    • Protect Israel from the fiery darts of the evil one coming from every direction, both within and without.
    • Grant your heavenly wisdom to those guiding Israel militarily, politically, and diplomatically;
    • Give them hearts to receive, and the courage to do, what’s right in your sight.
    • Comfort those who grieve and mourn the loss of loved ones;
    • Rebuke those who would use grief for evil purposes.
    • Bring swift and certain justice to all those complicit in the October 7th atrocities;
    • Deliver the hostages from captivity, and restore their souls.
    • Destroy every stronghold of the evil death cult terrorizing the Middle East.
    • Strengthen the Messianic communities – Jew and Arab alike – bind them together in love, that they may be a source of help, and healing, and hope;
    • Use them in the restoration of your people to their proper place in your Kingdom.
    • We pray in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

+ Heavenly Father, you have promised to hear what we ask in the Name of your Son: Accept and fulfill our petitions, we pray, not as we ask in our ignorance, nor as we deserve in our sinfulness, but as you know and love us in your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Job Speaks: My Friends Have No Wisdom

12:1 Then Job replied ⌞to his friends⌟,

“You certainly are ⌞wise⌟ people,
and when you die, wisdom will die.
Like you, I have a mind.
I am not inferior to you.
But who doesn’t know these things?
I am a laughingstock to my neighbors.
I am one who calls on God and expects an answer.
A man of integrity, a man who is righteous, has become a laughingstock.

“A person who has an easy life has no appreciation for misfortune.
He thinks it is the fate of those who slip up.
⌞But⌟ robbers’ tents are prosperous,
and there is security for those who provoke God,
for those whose god is their power.

“Instead, ask the animals, and they will teach you.
Ask the birds, and they will tell you.
Or speak with the earth, and it will teach you.
Even the fish will relate ⌞the story⌟ to you.
What creature doesn’t know that the Lord’s hands made it?
The life of every living creature
and the spirit in every human body are in his hands.
Doesn’t the ear distinguish sounds
and the tongue taste food?

Wisdom Comes from God

12:12 “Wisdom is with the ancient one.
The one who has had many days has insight.
God has wisdom and strength.
Advice and insight are his.
When he tears ⌞something⌟ down, it cannot be rebuilt.
When he puts someone in prison, that person cannot be freed.
When he holds back the waters, there is a drought.
When he releases them, they flood the earth.

“God has power and priceless wisdom.
He owns ⌞both⌟ the deceiver and the person who is deceived.
He leads counselors away barefoot
and makes fools out of judges.
He loosens kings’ belts
and strips them of their pants.
He leads priests away barefoot
and misleads those who serve in a temple.
He makes trusted advisers unable to speak
and takes away the good judgment of respected leaders.
He pours contempt on influential people
and unbuckles the belt of the mighty.
He uncovers mysteries ⌞hidden⌟ in the darkness
and brings gloom into the light.
He makes nations important and then destroys them.
He makes nations large and leads them away.
He takes away the common sense of a country’s leaders
and makes them stumble about in a pathless wilderness.
They grope in the dark with no light,
and he makes them stumble like drunks.

Zophar Speaks: Your Words Call for an Answer, Job

“Shouldn’t someone answer this flood of words?
Should a good public speaker be acquitted?
Should your empty talk silence others
so that you can make fun of us without any shame?
You say, ‘My teaching is morally correct,’

And when he sees sin, doesn’t he pay attention to it?

Confess Your Sin and Be Forgiven

11:13 “If you want to set your heart right,

If you’re holding on to sin, put it far away,

Then your life will be brighter than the noonday sun.
The darkness in your life will become like morning.
You will feel confident because there’s hope,

You will lie down with no one to frighten you,

Stephen Is Arrested

6:8 Stephen was a man filled with God’s favor  and power. He did amazing things and performed miracles. ⌞One day⌟ some men from the cities of Cyrene and Alexandria and the provinces of Cilicia and Asia started an argument with Stephen. They belonged to a synagogue called Freedmen’s Synagogue. They couldn’t argue with Stephen because he spoke with the wisdom that the Spirit had given him. Then they bribed some men to lie.

These men said, “We heard him slander Moses and God.” The liars stirred up trouble among the people, the leaders, and the experts in Moses’ Teachings. So they went to Stephen, took him by force, and brought him in front of the Jewish council. Some witnesses stood up and lied about Stephen. They said, “This man never stops saying bad things about the holy place and Moses’ Teachings. We heard him say that Jesus from Nazareth will destroy the temple and change the customs that Moses gave us.”

Everyone who sat in the council stared at him and saw that his face looked like an angel’s face.

Ruth Gathers Grain in the Field of Boaz

2:1 Naomi had a relative. He was from Elimelech’s side of the family. He was a man of outstanding character named Boaz.

Ruth, who was from Moab, said to Naomi, “Please let me go to the field of anyone who will be kind to me. There I will gather the grain left behind by the reapers.”

Naomi told her, “Go, my daughter.”

So Ruth went. She entered a field and gathered the grain left behind by the reapers. Now it happened that she ended up in the part of the field that belonged to Boaz, who was from Elimelech’s family.

Just then, Boaz was coming from Bethlehem, and he said to his reapers, “May the Lord be with all of you!”

They answered him, “May the Lord bless you!”

Boaz asked the young man in charge of his reapers, “Who is this young woman?”

The young man answered, “She’s a young Moabite woman who came back with Naomi from the country of Moab. She said, ‘Please let me gather grain. I will only gather among the bundles behind the reapers.’ So she came here and has been on her feet from daybreak until now. She just sat down this minute in the shelter.”

Boaz Speaks with Ruth

2:8 Boaz said to Ruth, “Listen, my daughter. Don’t go in any other field to gather grain, and don’t even leave this one. Stay here with my young women. Watch where my men are reaping, and follow the young women in that field. I have ordered my young men not to touch you. When you’re thirsty, go to the jars and drink some of the water that the young men have drawn.”

Ruth immediately bowed down to the ground and said to him, “Why are you so helpful? Why are you paying attention to me? I’m only a foreigner.”

Boaz answered her, “People have told me about everything you have done for your mother-in-law after your husband died. They told me how you left your father and mother and the country where you were born. They also told me how you came to people that you didn’t know before. May the Lord reward you for what you have done! May you receive a rich reward from the Lord God of Israel, under whose protection you have come for shelter.”

Ruth replied, “Sir, may your kindness to me continue. You have comforted me and reassured me, and I’m not even one of your own servants.”

When it was time to eat, Boaz told her, “Come here. Have some bread, and dip it into the sour wine.” So she sat beside the reapers, and he handed her some roasted grain. She ate all she wanted and had some left over.

When she got up to gather grain, Boaz ordered his servants, “Let her gather grain even among the bundles. Don’t give her any problems. Even pull some grain out of the bundles and leave it for her to gather. Don’t give her a hard time about it.”

Ruth and Naomi Talk about Boaz

2:17 So Ruth gathered grain in the field until evening. Then she separated the grain from its husks. She had about half a bushel of barley. She picked it up and went into the town, and her mother-in-law saw what she had gathered. Ruth also took out what she had left over from lunch and gave it to Naomi.

Her mother-in-law asked her, “Where did you gather grain today? Just where did you work? May the man who paid attention to you be blessed.”

Ruth told her mother-in-law about the person with whom she worked. She said, “The man I worked with today is named Boaz.”

Naomi said to her daughter-in-law, “May the Lord bless him. The Lord hasn’t stopped being kind to people—living or dead.” Then Naomi told her, “That man is a relative of ours. He is a close relative, one of those responsible for taking care of us.”

Ruth, who was from Moab, told her, “He also said to me, ‘Stay with my younger workers until they have finished the harvest.’ ”

Naomi told her daughter-in-law Ruth, “It’s a good idea, my daughter, that you go out to the fields with his young women. If you go to someone else’s field, you may be molested.”

So Ruth stayed with the young women who were working for Boaz. She gathered grain until both the barley harvest and the wheat harvest ended. And she continued to live with her mother-in-law.

NT Reading: 2 Peter 3:14-18 (GW)

3:14 Therefore, dear friends, with this to look forward to, make every effort to have him find you at peace, without ⌞spiritual⌟ stains or blemishes. Think of our Lord’s patience as an opportunity ⌞for us⌟ to be saved. This is what our dear brother Paul wrote to you about, using the wisdom God gave him. He talks about this subject in all his letters. Some things in his letters are hard to understand. Ignorant people and people who aren’t sure of what they believe distort what Paul says in his letters the same way they distort the rest of the Scriptures. These people will be destroyed.

Dear friends, you already know these things. So be on your guard not to be carried away by the deception of people who have no principles. Then you won’t fall from your firm position. But grow in the good will [a] and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Glory belongs to him now and for that eternal day! Amen.

Prayer: ACNA | BCP2019

Benedict of Nursia

+ Gracious and holy Father, please give us intellect to understand you, reason to discern you, diligence to seek you, wisdom to find you, a spirit to know you,  hearts to meditate upon you, ears to hear you, eyes to see you, tongues to proclaim you, ways of life pleasing to you, patience to wait for you, and perseverance to look for you. Grant us a perfect end, your holy presence, a blessed resurrection, and life everlasting. Amen.

+ O God, our heavenly Father, you manifested your love by sending your only-begotten Son into the world, that all might live through him: Pour out your Spirit on your Church, that we may fulfill his command to preach the Gospel to all people. Send forth laborers into your harvest; defend them in all dangers  and temptations; and hasten the time when the fullness of the Gentiles shall be gathered in, and faithful Israel shall be saved; through your Son Jesus Christ  our Lord. Amen.

+ Sovereign Lord: We pray for the peace of Jerusalem:

    • Protect Israel from the fiery darts of the evil one coming from every direction, both within and without.
    • Grant your heavenly wisdom to those guiding Israel militarily, politically, and diplomatically;
    • Give them hearts to receive, and the courage to do, what’s right in your sight.
    • Comfort those who grieve and mourn the loss of loved ones;
    • Rebuke those who would use grief for evil purposes.
    • Bring swift and certain justice to all those complicit in the October 7th atrocities;
    • Deliver the hostages from captivity, and restore their souls.
    • Destroy every stronghold of the evil death cult terrorizing the Middle East.
    • Strengthen the Messianic communities – Jew and Arab alike – bind them together in love, that they may be a source of help, and healing, and hope;

Amen.
