The Value of Righteousness

11:1 Dishonest scales are disgusting to the Lord,
but accurate weights are pleasing to him.
Arrogance comes,
then comes shame,
but wisdom remains with humble people.
Integrity guides decent people,
but hypocrisy leads treacherous people to ruin.

Riches are of no help on the day of fury,
but righteousness saves from death.
The righteousness of innocent people makes their road smooth,
but wicked people fall by their own wickedness.
Decent people are saved by their righteousness,
but treacherous people are trapped by their own greed.
At the death of a wicked person, hope vanishes.
Moreover, his confidence in strength vanishes.

A righteous person is rescued from trouble,
and a wicked person takes his place.
With his talk a godless person can ruin his neighbor,
but righteous people are rescued by knowledge.

When righteous people prosper, a city is glad.
When wicked people die, there are songs of joy.
With the blessing of decent people a city is raised up,
but by the words of wicked people, it is torn down.

A person who despises a neighbor has no sense,
but a person who has understanding keeps quiet.
Whoever gossips gives away secrets,
but whoever is trustworthy in spirit can keep a secret.
A nation will fall when there is no direction,
but with many advisers there is victory.
Whoever guarantees a stranger’s loan will get into trouble,
but whoever hates the closing of a deal remains secure.
A gracious woman wins respect,
but ruthless men gain riches.
A merciful person helps himself,
but a cruel person hurts himself.
A wicked person earns dishonest wages,
but whoever spreads righteousness earns honest pay.
As righteousness leads to life,
so whoever pursues evil finds his own death.

Devious people are disgusting to the Lord,
but he is delighted with those whose ways are innocent.
Certainly, an evil person will not go unpunished,
but the descendants of righteous people will escape.
⌞Like⌟ a gold ring in a pig’s snout,
⌞so⌟ is a beautiful woman who lacks good taste.
The desire of righteous people ends only in good,
but the hope of wicked people ends only in fury.

One person spends freely and yet grows richer,
while another holds back what he owes and yet grows poorer.
A generous person will be made rich,
and whoever satisfies others will himself be satisfied.
People will curse the one who hoards grain,
but a blessing will be upon the head of the one who sells it.

Whoever eagerly seeks good searches for good will,
but whoever looks for evil finds it.
Whoever trusts his riches will fall,
but righteous people will flourish like a green leaf.
Whoever brings trouble upon his family inherits ⌞only⌟ wind,
and that stubborn fool becomes a slave to the wise in heart.
The fruit of a righteous person is a tree of life,
and a winner of souls is wise.
If the righteous person is rewarded on earth,
how much more the wicked person and the sinner!

NT Reading: Hebrews 12:3-13 (GW

12:3 Think about Jesus, who endured opposition from sinners, so that you don’t become tired and give up.

You struggle against sin, but your struggles haven’t killed you. You have forgotten the encouraging words that God speaks to you as his children:

“My child, pay attention when the Lord disciplines you.
Don’t give up when he corrects you.
The Lord disciplines everyone he loves.
He severely disciplines everyone he accepts as his child.”

Endure your discipline. God corrects you as a father corrects his children. All children are disciplined by their fathers. If you aren’t disciplined like the other children, you aren’t part of the family. On earth we have fathers who disciplined us, and we respect them. Shouldn’t we place ourselves under the authority of God, the father of spirits, so that we will live? For a short time our fathers disciplined us as they thought best. Yet, God disciplines us for our own good so that we can become holy like him. We don’t enjoy being disciplined. It always seems to cause more pain than joy. But later on, those who learn from that discipline have peace that comes from doing what is right.

Strengthen your tired arms and weak knees. Keep walking along straight paths so that your injured leg won’t get worse. Instead, let it heal.

Wisdom as Lifegiver

8:32 “Now, sons, listen to me.
Blessed are those who follow my ways.
Listen to discipline, and become wise.
Do not leave my ways.
Blessed is the person who listens to me,
watches at my door day after day,
and waits by my doorposts.
Whoever finds me finds life
and obtains favor from the Lord.
Whoever sins against me harms himself.
All those who hate me love death.”

Wisdom Hosts a Banquet

9:1 Wisdom has built her house.
She has carved out her seven pillars.
She has prepared her meat.
She has mixed her wine.
She has set her table.
She has sent out her servant girls.
She calls from the highest places in the city,
“Whoever is gullible turn in here!”

She says to a person without sense,
“Come, eat my bread,
and drink the wine I have mixed.
Stop being gullible and live.
Start traveling the road to understanding.”

NT Reading: Hebrews 11:29-12:2 (GW

11:29 Faith caused the people to go through the Red Sea as if it were dry land. The Egyptians also tried this, but they drowned.

Faith caused the walls of Jericho to fall after the Israelites marched around them for seven days.

Faith led the prostitute Rahab to welcome the spies as friends. She was not killed with those who refused to obey God.

What more should I say? I don’t have enough time to tell you about Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, and the prophets. Through faith they conquered kingdoms, did what God approved, and received what God had promised. They shut the mouths of lions, put out raging fires, and escaped death. They found strength when they were weak. They were powerful in battle and defeated other armies. Women received their loved ones back from the dead. Other believers were brutally tortured but refused to be released so that they might gain eternal life. Some were made fun of and whipped, and some were chained and put in prison. Some were stoned to death, sawed in half, and killed with swords. Some wore the skins of sheep and goats. Some were poor, abused, and mistreated. The world didn’t deserve these good people. Some wandered around in deserts and mountains and lived in caves and holes in the ground.

All these people were known for their faith, but none of them received what God had promised. God planned to give us something very special so that we would gain eternal life with them.

Faith Directs Our Lives

12:1 Since we are surrounded by so many examples ⌞of faith⌟, we must get rid of everything that slows us down, especially sin that distracts us. We must run the race that lies ahead of us and never give up. We must focus on Jesus, the source and goal of our faith. He saw the joy ahead of him, so he endured death on the cross and ignored the disgrace it brought him. Now he holds the honored position—the one next to God the Father on the heavenly throne.

Don’t Favor Rich People over Poor People

2:1 My brothers and sisters, practice your faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ by not favoring one person over another. For example, two men come to your worship service. One man is wearing gold rings and fine clothes; the other man, who is poor, is wearing shabby clothes. Suppose you give special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say to him, “Please have a seat.” But you say to the poor man, “Stand over there,” or “Sit on the floor at my feet.” Aren’t you discriminating against people and using a corrupt standard to make judgments?

Listen, my dear brothers and sisters! Didn’t God choose poor people in the world to become rich in faith and to receive the kingdom that he promised to those who love him? Yet, you show no respect to poor people. Don’t rich people oppress you and drag you into court? Don’t they curse the good name ⌞of Jesus⌟, the name that was used to bless you?

You are doing right if you obey this law from the highest authority: “Love your neighbor as you love yourself.” If you favor one person over another, you’re sinning, and this law convicts you of being disobedient.  If someone obeys all of God’s laws except one, that person is guilty of breaking all of them….

We Show Our Faith by What We Do

2:14 My brothers and sisters, what good does it do if someone claims to have faith but doesn’t do any good things? Can this kind of faith save him? Suppose a believer, whether a man or a woman, needs clothes or food and one of you tells that person, “God be with you! Stay warm, and make sure you eat enough.” If you don’t provide for that person’s physical needs, what good does it do? In the same way, faith by itself is dead if it doesn’t cause you to do any good things.

The Faith of a Greek Woman

7:24 Jesus left that place and went to the territory of Tyre. He didn’t want anyone to know that he was staying in a house there. However, it couldn’t be kept a secret.

A woman whose little daughter had an evil spirit heard about Jesus. She went to him and bowed down. The woman happened to be Greek, born in Phoenicia in Syria. She asked him to force the demon out of her daughter.

Jesus said to her, “First, let the children eat all they want. It’s not right to take the children’s food and throw it to the dogs.”

She answered him, “Lord, even the dogs under the table eat some of the children’s scraps.”

Jesus said to her, “Because you have said this, go! The demon has left your daughter.”

The woman went home and found the little child lying on her bed, and the demon was gone.

Jesus Cures a Deaf Man

7:31 Jesus then left the neighborhood of Tyre. He went through Sidon and the territory of the Ten Cities  to the Sea of Galilee.

Some people brought to him a man who was deaf and who also had a speech defect. They begged Jesus to lay his hand on him. Jesus took him away from the crowd to be alone with him. He put his fingers into the man’s ears, and after spitting, he touched the man’s tongue. Then he looked up to heaven, sighed, and said to the man, “Ephphatha!” which means, “Be opened!” At once the man could hear and talk normally.

Jesus ordered the people not to tell anyone. But the more he ordered them, the more they spread the news. Jesus completely amazed the people. They said, “He has done everything well. He makes the deaf hear and the mute talk.”

I stand amazed in the presence
Of Jesus the Nazarene
And wonder how He could love me A sinner, condemned, unclean

How marvellous, how wonderful And my song shall ever be
How marvellous, how wonderful Is my Saviour’s love for me

For me it was in the garden
He prayed, not my will, but Thine
He had no tears for His own griefs But sweat drops of blood for mine

He took my sins and my sorrows
He made them His very own
He bore the burden of Calvary And suffered and died alone

When with the ransomed in glory
His face I at last shall see
‘Twill be my joy through the ages To sing of His love for me

The Faith of a Canaanite Woman

15:21 Jesus left that place and went to the region of Tyre and Sidon.

A Canaanite woman from that territory came ⌞to him⌟ and began to shout, “Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is tormented by a demon.”

But he did not answer her at all. Then his disciples came to him and urged him, “Send her away. She keeps shouting behind us.”

Jesus responded, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the nation of Israel.”

She came to him, bowed down, and said, “Lord, help me!”

Jesus replied, “It’s not right to take the children’s food and throw it to the dogs.”

She said, “You’re right, Lord. But even the dogs eat scraps that fall from their masters’ tables.”

Then Jesus answered her, “Woman, you have strong faith! What you wanted will be done for you.” At that moment her daughter was cured.

Jesus moved on from there and went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up a mountain and sat there.

A large crowd came to him, bringing with them the lame, blind, disabled, those unable to talk, and many others. They laid them at his feet, and he cured them. The crowd was amazed to see mute people talking, the disabled cured, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. So they praised the God of Israel.

The Lord Will Pour Out His Spirit and Bring Peace

32:1 A king will rule with fairness,
and officials will rule with justice.

Then each ruler will be like a shelter from the wind
and a hiding place from the rain.
They will be like streams on parched ground
and the shade of a large rock in a weary land.

Then the vision of those who can see won’t be blurred,
and the ears of those who can hear will pay attention.

Then those who are reckless will begin to understand,
and those who stutter will speak quickly and clearly.

Godless fools will no longer be called nobles,
nor will scoundrels be considered gentlemen.

Godless fools speak foolishness,
and their minds plan evil
in order to do ungodly things.
They speak falsely about the Lord.
They let people go hungry
and withhold water from thirsty people.

The tricks of scoundrels are evil.
They devise wicked plans in order to ruin poor people with lies,
even when needy people plead for justice.

But honorable people act honorably
and stand firm for what is honorable.

NT Reading: Romans 2:12-16 (GW

2:12 Here’s the reason: Whoever sins without having the laws in Moses’ Teachings will still be condemned to destruction. And whoever has these laws from God and sins will still be judged by them. People who merely listen to the laws in Moses’ Teachings don’t have God’s approval. Rather, people who do what those laws demand will have God’s approval.

God Will Judge People Who Are Not Jewish

2:14 For example, whenever non-Jews who don’t have the laws in Moses’ Teachings do by nature the things that those laws contain, they are a law to themselves even though they don’t have any of those laws. They show that some requirements found in Moses’ Teachings are written in their hearts. Their consciences speak to them. Their thoughts accuse them on one occasion and defend them on another. This happens as they face the day when God, through Christ Jesus, will judge people’s secret thoughts. He will use the Good News that I am spreading to make that judgment.

    • Give them hearts to receive, and the courage to do, what’s right in your sight.
    • Comfort those who grieve and mourn the loss of loved ones;
    • Rebuke those who would use grief for evil purposes.
    • Bring swift and certain justice to all those complicit in the October 7th atrocities;
    • Deliver the hostages from captivity, and restore their souls.
    • Destroy every stronghold of the evil death cult terrorizing the Middle East.
    • Strengthen the Messianic communities – Jew and Arab alike – bind them together in love, that they may be a source of help, and healing, and hope;
    • Use them in the restoration of your people to their proper place in your Kingdom.
    • We pray in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

+ O God, you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth, and sent your blessed Son to preach peace to those who are far off and to those who  are near: Grant that people everywhere may seek after you and find you; bring the nations into your fold; pour out your Spirit upon all flesh; and hasten the coming of your kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
