After Pentecost | Thursday 12 Sep 2024

+ In the Name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Opening:

O Lord God, grant your people grace
to withstand the temptations of
the world, the flesh, and the devil,
and with pure hearts and minds to follow you,
the only God;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.

“When God tested Abraham,
faith led him to offer his son Isaac.”
(Hebrews 11:17)

OT Reading: Proverbs 15:1-17 (GW)

15:1 A gentle answer turns away rage,
but a harsh word stirs up anger.
The tongues of wise people give good expression to knowledge,
but the mouths of fools pour out a flood of stupidity.
The eyes of the Lord are everywhere.
They watch evil people and good people.
A soothing tongue is a tree of life,
but a deceitful tongue breaks the spirit.
A stubborn fool despises his father’s discipline,
but whoever appreciates a warning shows good sense.
Great treasure is in the house of a righteous person,
but trouble comes along with the income of a wicked person.
The lips of wise people spread knowledge,
but a foolish attitude does not.

A sacrifice brought by wicked people is disgusting to the Lord,
but the prayers of decent people please him.
The way of wicked people is disgusting to the Lord,
but he loves those who pursue righteousness.

Discipline is a terrible ⌞burden⌟ to anyone who leaves the ⌞right⌟ path.
Anyone who hates a warning will die.
If Sheol and Abaddon lie open in front of the Lord
how much more the human heart!
A mocker does not appreciate a warning.
He will not go to wise people.

A joyful heart makes a cheerful face,
but with a heartache comes depression.
The mind of a person who has understanding searches for knowledge,
but the mouths of fools feed on stupidity.
Every day is a terrible day for a miserable person,
but a cheerful heart has a continual feast.

Better to have a little with the fear of the Lord
than great treasure and turmoil.
Better to have a dish of vegetables where there is love
than juicy steaks where there is hate.

NT Reading: Hebrews 11:17-22 (GW

11:17 When God tested Abraham, faith led him to offer his son Isaac. Abraham, the one who received the promises from God, was willing to offer his only son as a sacrifice. God had said to him, “Through Isaac your descendants will carry on your name.” Abraham believed that God could bring Isaac back from the dead. Abraham did receive Isaac back from the dead in a figurative sense.

Faith led Isaac to bless Jacob and Esau.

While Jacob was dying, faith led him to bless each of Joseph’s sons. He leaned on the top of his staff and worshiped God.

While Joseph was dying, faith led him to speak about the Israelites leaving Egypt and give them instructions about burying his bones.

Prayer: ACNA | BCP2019

+ O God, you made us in your own image, and you have redeemed us through your Son Jesus Christ: Look with compassion on the whole human family; take away the arrogance and hatred which infect our hearts; break down the walls that separate us; unite us in bonds of love; and work through our struggle and confusion to accomplish your purposes on earth; that, in your good time, all nations and races may serve you in harmony around your heavenly throne; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

+ Sovereign Lord: We pray for the peace of Jerusalem:

    • Protect Israel from the fiery darts of the evil one coming from every direction, both within and without.
    • Grant your heavenly wisdom to those guiding Israel militarily, politically, and diplomatically;
    • Give them hearts to receive, and the courage to do, what’s right in your sight.
    • Comfort those who grieve and mourn the loss of loved ones;
    • Rebuke those who would use grief for evil purposes.
    • Bring swift and certain justice to all those complicit in the October 7th atrocities;
    • Deliver the hostages from captivity, and restore their souls.
    • Destroy every stronghold of the evil death cult terrorizing the Middle East.
    • Strengthen the Messianic communities – Jew and Arab alike – bind them together in love, that they may be a source of help, and healing, and hope;
    • Use them in the restoration of your people to their proper place in your Kingdom.
    • We pray in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

+ Eternal God, in whose perfect kingdom no sword is drawn but the sword of righteousness, no strength known but the strength of love: So mightily  spread abroad your Spirit, that all peoples may be gathered under the banner of the Prince of Peace; to whom be dominion and glory, now and for ever.  Amen.
