From Psalms: Psalm 111 (GW)Nathan Clark George

111:1 Hallelujah!

I will give thanks to the Lord with all my heart
in the company of decent people and in the congregation.

2 The Lord’s deeds are spectacular.
They should be studied by all who enjoy them.

3 His work is glorious and majestic.
His righteousness continues forever.

4 He has made his miracles unforgettable.
The Lord is merciful and compassionate.

5 He provides food for those who fear him.
He always remembers his promise.

6 He has revealed the power of his works to his people
by giving them the lands of other nations as an inheritance.

7 His works are done with truth and justice.
All his guiding principles are trustworthy.

8 They last forever and ever.
They are carried out with truth and decency.

9 He has sent salvation to his people.
He has ordered that his promise should continue forever.
His name is holy and terrifying.

10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
Good sense is shown by everyone who follows ⌞God’s guiding principles⌟.
His praise continues forever.

OT Reading: Deuteronomy 12:28-32 (GW

12:28 Be sure you obey all these instructions I’m giving you. Then things will always go well for you and your descendants because you will be doing what the Lord your God considers good and right.

The Lord your God will destroy the nations where you’re going and force them out of your way. You will take possession of their land and live there. After they’ve been destroyed, be careful you aren’t tempted to follow their customs. Don’t even ask about their gods and say, “How did these people worship their gods? We want to do what they did.” Never worship the Lord your God in the way they worship their gods, because everything they do for their gods is disgusting to the Lord. He hates it! They even burn their sons and daughters as sacrifices to their gods.

Be sure to do everything I command you. Never add anything to it or take anything away from it.

ירושלים של זהב (Jerusalem of Gold)Israeli Police

The mountain air is clear as water
The scent of pines around
Is carried on the breeze of twilight,
And tinkling bells resound.

The trees and stones there softly slumber,
A dream enfolds them all.
So solitary lies the city,
And at its heart — a wall.

Chorus:
Oh, Jerusalem of gold,
and of light and of bronze,
I am the lute for all your songs.
x2

The wells are filled again with water,
The square with joyous crowd,
On the Temple Mount within the City,
The shofar rings out loud.

Within the caverns in the mountains
A thousand suns will glow,
We’ll take the Dead Sea road together,
That runs through Jericho.

Chorus…

But as I sing to you, my city,
And you with crowns adorn,
I am the least of all your children,
Of all the poets born.

Your name will scorch my lips for ever,
Like a seraph’s kiss, I’m told,
If I forget thee, golden city,
Jerusalem of gold.

Chorus…

A Letter to the Church in Pergamum

2:12 “To the messenger of the church in Pergamum, write: The one who holds the sharp two-edged sword says:

I know where you live. Satan’s throne is there. You hold on to my name and have not denied your belief in me, even in the days of Antipas. He was my faithful witness who was killed in your presence, where Satan lives. But I have a few things against you: You have among you those who follow what Balaam taught Balak. Balak trapped the people of Israel by ⌞encouraging⌟ them to eat food sacrificed to idols and to sin sexually. You also have some who follow what the Nicolaitans teach. So return to me and change the way you think and act, or I will come to you quickly and wage war against them with the sword from my mouth. Let the person who has ears listen to what the Spirit says to the churches. I will give some of the hidden manna to everyone who wins the victory. I will also give each person a white stone with a new name written on it, a name that is known only to the person who receives it.

+Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

+ Almighty God, you have not dealt with us according to our sins, nor rewarded us according to our iniquities; grant that we, who for our evil deeds deserve to be punished, by the might of your grace may mercifully be relieved; through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

+ Lord of Heaven’s Armies, we pray for swift and total victory over all evil in the Holy Land. Bring home the hostages, and deliver from bondage every person captivated by the evil death cult terrorizing the Middle East. Moses Reminds Israel Why He Will Not Enter Canaan

3:23 Then I pleaded with the Lord: “Almighty Lord, you have ⌞only⌟ begun to show me how great and powerful you are. What kind of god is there in heaven or on earth who can do the deeds and the mighty acts you have done? Please let me go over and see the beautiful land on the other side of the Jordan River—those beautiful mountains in Lebanon.”

The Lord was angry with me because of you, so he wouldn’t listen to me. He said, “That’s enough out of you! Don’t talk to me anymore about this. Go to the top of Mount Pisgah, and look west, north, south, and east. You may look at the land, but you will never cross the Jordan River. Give instructions to Joshua. Encourage and strengthen him, because he will lead these people across ⌞the Jordan River⌟, and he will help them take possession of the land you see.”

So we stayed in the valley near Beth Peor.

NT Reading: Romans 9:6-18 (GW)

9:6 Now it is not as though God’s word has failed. Clearly, not everyone descended from Israel is part of Israel or a descendant of Abraham. However, ⌞as Scripture says,⌟ “Through Isaac your descendants will carry on your name.” This means that children born by natural descent ⌞from Abraham⌟ are not necessarily God’s children. Instead, children born by the promise are considered Abraham’s descendants.

For example, this is what the promise said, “I will come back at the right time, and Sarah will have a son.” The same thing happened to Rebekah. Rebekah became pregnant by our ancestor Isaac. Before the children had been born or had done anything good or bad, Rebekah was told that the older child would serve the younger one. This was said to Rebekah so that God’s plan would remain a matter of his choice, a choice based on God’s call and not on anything people do. The Scriptures say, “I loved Jacob, but I hated Esau.”

What can we say—that God is unfair? That’s unthinkable! For example, God said to Moses, “I will be kind to anyone I want to. I will be merciful to anyone I want to.” Therefore, God’s choice does not depend on a person’s desire or effort, but on God’s mercy.

For example, Scripture says to Pharaoh, “I put you here for this reason: to demonstrate my power through you and to spread my name throughout the earth.” Therefore, if God wants to be kind to anyone, he will be. If he wants to make someone stubborn, he will.

Wisdom’s Announcement

8:1 Does not wisdom call out?
Does not understanding raise its voice?
⌞Wisdom⌟ takes its stand on high ground,
by the wayside where the roads meet,
near the gates to the city.

At the entrance ⌞wisdom⌟ sings its song,
“I am calling to all of you,
and my appeal is to all people.
You gullible people, learn how to be sensible.
You fools, get a heart that has understanding.

Listen! I am speaking about noble things,
and my lips will say what is right.
My mouth expresses the truth,
and wickedness is disgusting to my lips.
Everything I say is fair,
and there is nothing twisted or crooked in it.
All of it is clear to a person who has understanding
and right to those who have acquired knowledge.

Take my discipline, not silver,
and my knowledge rather than fine gold,
because wisdom is better than jewels.
Nothing you desire can equal it.

Wisdom’s Authority

8:12 “I, Wisdom, live with insight,
and I acquire knowledge and foresight.

To fear the Lord is to hate evil.
I hate pride, arrogance, evil behavior, and twisted speech.
Advice and priceless wisdom are mine.
I, Understanding, have strength.

Through me kings reign,
and rulers decree fair laws.
Through me princes rule,
so do nobles and all fair judges.

I love those who love me.
Those eagerly looking for me will find me.
I have riches and honor,
lasting wealth and righteousness.

What I produce is better than gold, pure gold.
What I yield is better than fine silver.
I walk in the way of righteousness, on the paths of justice,
to give an inheritance to those who love me
and to fill their treasuries.

Jesus Appoints Twelve Apostles

3:13 Jesus went up a mountain, called those whom he wanted, and they came to him. He appointed twelve whom he called apostles. They were to accompany him and to be sent out by him to spread ⌞the Good News⌟. They also had the authority to force demons out of people.

He appointed these twelve: Simon (whom Jesus named Peter), James and his brother John (Zebedee’s sons whom Jesus named Boanerges, which means “Thunderbolts”), Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James (son of Alphaeus), Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot (who later betrayed Jesus).

45:25 So they left Egypt and came to their father Jacob in Canaan. They told him, “Joseph is still alive! Yes, he is ruler of Egypt.” Jacob was stunned and didn’t believe them. Yet, when they told their father everything Joseph had said to them and he saw the wagons Joseph had sent to bring him back, his spirits were lifted.

“You have convinced me!” Israel said. “My son Joseph is still alive. I will go and see him before I die.”

Jacob’s [Israel’s] Seventh Encounter with God

46:1 Israel moved with all he had. When he came to Beersheba, he offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac.

God spoke to Israel in a vision that night and said, “Jacob, Jacob!”

“Here I am,” he answered.

“I am God, the God of your father,” he said. “Don’t be afraid to go to Egypt, because I will make you a great nation there. I will go with you to Egypt, and I will make sure you come back again. Joseph will close your eyes ⌞when you die⌟.”

So Jacob left Beersheba. Israel’s sons put their father Jacob, their children, and their wives in the wagons Pharaoh had sent to bring him back. They also took their livestock and the possessions they had accumulated in Canaan.

Jacob and all his family arrived in Egypt. He had brought his sons, his grandsons, his daughters, and his granddaughters—his entire family.

NT Reading: Acts 5:33-42 (GW)

5:33 When the men on the council heard this, they became furious and wanted to execute the apostles. But a Pharisee named Gamaliel stood up. He was a highly respected expert in Moses’ Teachings. He ordered that the apostles should be taken outside for a little while.

Then he said to the council, “Men of Israel, consider carefully what you do with these men. Some time ago Theudas appeared. He claimed that he was important, and about four hundred men joined him. He was killed, and all his followers were scattered. The whole movement was a failure.

“After that man, at the time of the census, Judas from Galilee appeared and led people in a revolt. He, too, died, and all his followers were scattered.

“We should keep away from these men for now. We should leave them alone. I can guarantee that if the plan they put into action is of human origin, it will fail. However, if it’s from God, you won’t be able to stop them. You may even discover that you’re fighting against God.”

The council took his advice. They called the apostles, beat them, ordered them not to speak about the one named Jesus, and let them go.

The apostles left the council room. They were happy to have been considered worthy to suffer dishonor for speaking about Jesus. Every day in the temple courtyard and from house to house, they refused to stop teaching and telling the Good News that Jesus is the Messiah.

The Lord’s First Promise to Abram

12:1 The Lord said to Abram,

“Leave your land,
your relatives,
and your father’s home.
Go to the land that I will show you.
I will make you a great nation,
I will bless you.
I will make your name great,
and you will be a blessing.
I will bless those who bless you,
and whoever curses you, I will curse.
Through you every family on earth will be blessed.”

The Lord’s Second Promise to Abram

12:4 So Abram left, as the Lord had told him, and Lot went with him. Abram was 75 years old when he left Haran. Abram set out for Canaan. He took along his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, and all the possessions they had accumulated and the servants they had acquired in Haran.

They arrived in Canaan, and Abram traveled through the land to the oak tree belonging to Moreh at Shechem. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said, “I’m going to give this land to your descendants.” So he built an altar there to the Lord, who had appeared to him.

He moved on to the hills east of Bethel, and he put up his tent—with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. He also built an altar to the Lord there and worshiped the Lord. Abram kept moving toward the Negev.

NT Reading: 1 Corinthians 7:17-24 (GW)

7:17 Everyone should live the life that the Lord gave him when God called him. This is the guideline I use in every church.

Any man who was already circumcised when he was called to be a Christian shouldn’t undo his circumcision. Any man who was uncircumcised when he was called to be a Christian shouldn’t get circumcised. Circumcision is nothing, and the lack of it is nothing. But keeping what God commands is everything. All people should stay as they were when they were called. Were you a slave when you were called? That shouldn’t bother you. However, if you have a chance to become free, take it. If the Lord called you when you were a slave, you are the Lord’s free person. In the same way, if you were free when you were called, you are Christ’s slave. You were bought for a price. Don’t become anyone’s slaves. Brothers and sisters, you should remain in whatever circumstances you were in when God called you. God is with you in those circumstances.
