After Pentecost | Wednesday 05 Jul 2023

+ In the Name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Opening:

O God, your never-failing providence
sets in order all things both in heaven and on earth:
Put away from us all hurtful things,
and give us those things that are profitable for us;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

“Then Jesus began to denounce the towns
where he had done so many of his miracles,
because they hadn’t repented of their sins
and turned to God.”
(Matthew 11:20)

From Psalms: Psalm 119 – Sin and Shin (Poor Bishop Hooper)

princes persecute me
still my heart stands in awe
i rejoice in your word
like one who’s found great treasure

how i hate falsehood
but how i love your law
i praise i praise
seven times a day

great peace have those who love your law
nothing can make them stumble

for all my ways all my ways all my ways
are before you

The Potter and the Clay

18:1 The Lord gave another message to Jeremiah. He said, “Go down to the potter’s shop, and I will speak to you there.” So I did as he told me and found the potter working at his wheel. But the jar he was making did not turn out as he had hoped, so he crushed it into a lump of clay again and started over.

Then the Lord gave me this message: “O Israel, can I not do to you as this potter has done to his clay? As the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand. If I announce that a certain nation or kingdom is to be uprooted, torn down, and destroyed, but then that nation renounces its evil ways, I will not destroy it as I had planned. And if I announce that I will plant and build up a certain nation or kingdom, but then that nation turns to evil and refuses to obey me, I will not bless it as I said I would.

“Therefore, Jeremiah, go and warn all Judah and Jerusalem. Say to them, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am planning disaster for you instead of good. So turn from your evil ways, each of you, and do what is right.’”

Judgment for the Unbelievers

11:20 Then Jesus began to denounce the towns where he had done so many of his miracles, because they hadn’t repented of their sins and turned to God. “What sorrow awaits you, Korazin and Bethsaida! For if the miracles I did in you had been done in wicked Tyre and Sidon, their people would have repented of their sins long ago, clothing themselves in burlap and throwing ashes on their heads to show their remorse. I tell you, Tyre and Sidon will be better off on judgment day than you.

“And you people of Capernaum, will you be honored in heaven? No, you will go down to the place of the dead. For if the miracles I did for you had been done in wicked Sodom, it would still be here today. I tell you, even Sodom will be better off on judgment day than you.”

Day of Judgement! Day of Wonders! (by John Newton)~ Everlasting Word Band

+ Day of judgment, day of wonders!
Hark! the trumpet’s awful sound,
Louder than a thousand thunders,
Shakes the vast creation round!
How the summons
Will the sinner’s heart confound!

+ At his call the dead awaken,
Rise to life from earth and sea:;
All the powers of nature shaken
By his look, prepare to flee:
Careless sinner,
What will then become of thee?

+ See the Judge our nature wearing,
Clothed in majesty divine!
We who long for his appearing
Then shall say, “”This God is mine!””
Woe to those who while on the earth
Refused to ever bend the knee.
They will say: “Lord, Lord we knew you!”
But He’ll say: “Depart from me!”

+ Horrors, past imagination,
Will surprise your trembling heart,
When you hear your condemnation,
Hence, accursèd wretch, depart!
Thou, with Satan
And his angels, have thy part!

+ Satan, now who tries to please you,
Lest your timely warning take,
When that word is past, will seize you,
Plunge you in the burning lake:
Think, poor sinner,
Thy eternal all’s at stake.

+ See the Judge our nature wearing,
Clothed in majesty divine!
We who long for his appearing
Then shall say, “”This God is mine!””
Woe to those who while on the earth
Refused to ever bend the knee.
They will say: “Lord, Lord we knew you.”
But He’ll say: “Depart from me!”

+ But to those who have confessèd,
Loved and served the Lord below,
He will say, Come near, ye blessèd,
See the kingdom I bestow;
You for ever
Will My love and glory know.

+ Under sorrows and reproaches,
May this thought your courage raise!
Swiftly God’s great day approaches,
Sighs then shall be changed to praise.
We shall triumph
While the world is in a blaze.

+ Rise up! Good and faithful soldiers
Take your place.
