Morning Prayer:

+ In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen

One thing I have asked of the Lord, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life; to behold the beauty of the Lord and to seek Him in His temple.

You will find the Lord your God, if you search after him with all your heart and with all your soul.

Psalm 119:153-160 NLT:

Look upon my suffering and rescue me, for I have not forgotten your instructions. Argue my case; take my side! Protect my life as you promised. The wicked are far from rescue, for they do not bother with your decrees.

Lord, how great is your mercy; let me be revived by following your regulations. Many persecute and trouble me, yet I have not swerved from your laws. Seeing these traitors makes me sick at heart, because they care nothing for your word.

See how I love your commandments, Lord. Give back my life because of your unfailing love. The very essence of your words is truth; all your just regulations will stand forever.

Jonah 2:5-7 NLT:

Romans 8:11 NLT:

The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.

Reflection/Prayer:

Your word was true from the beginning. Every one of Your righteous judgements endures for ever. Quicken me. Restore me to life. Lord, I believe.

Hal Lindsey is the author of The Late Great Planet Earth which (for a short time!) enjoyed immense popularity amongst Christian readers some years ago. The following incident is from a subsequent book, The Terminal Generation.

A nurse came up to me after I’d just spoken and said, ‘Hal, will you please come and meet a soldier I brought over from the veterans’ hospital? He accepted Christ as his Saviour and Lord as a result of my reading your book to him. It really took courage for him to come here tonight – he’s in great pain because both arms and legs have been amputated. He lost them in Vietnam. ‘ When I walked up to the wheeled stretcher on which he was lying, the young man looked up with a radiant face and said, ‘Tell me, Hal,will my new body have arms and legs?’ While choking back tears I turned to Philippians 3:20 and read:

But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Saviour from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables Him to bring everything under His control, will transform our lowly bodies so they will be like His glorious body.

‘Jim,’ I said, ‘your body will be like Jesus Christ’s glorious body. We know that His resurrection body is perfect, so we know that yours will be too.’

Psalm 119:145-152 NLT:

I pray with all my heart; answer me, Lord! I will obey your decrees.

I cry out to you; rescue me, that I may obey your laws. I rise early, before the sun is up; I cry out for help and put my hope in your words. I stay awake through the night, thinking about your promise.

In your faithful love, O Lord, hear my cry; let me be revived by following your regulations. Lawless people are coming to attack me; they live far from your instructions. But you are near, O Lord, and all your commands are true. I have known from my earliest days that your laws will last forever.

Habakkuk 2:1, 3 NLT:

I will climb up to my watchtower and stand at my guardpost. There I will wait to see what the Lord says and how he will answer my complaint.

This vision is for a future time. It describes the end, and it will be fulfilled. If it seems slow in coming, wait patiently, for it will surely take place. It will not be delayed.

Romans 10:13-15 NLT:

For “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them? And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That is why the Scriptures say, “How beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring good news!”

Reflection/Prayer:

Each of the sections of this, the longest of psalms, has an initial letter as its title, following the Hebrew alphabet. Like the month, the alphabet and the psalm are nearing the end. This section, ‘Koph’, speaks of a mature response to dependency and prayer in difficult circumstances. The soul cries out to God and waits in silent dependency on Him.

If we are the witness to Christ in today’s market places, where there are constant demands on our whole person, we need silence. If we are to be always available, not only physically, but by empathy, sympathy, friendship, understanding… we need silence. To be able to give joyous, unflagging hospitality, not only of house and food, but of mind, heart, body and soul, we need silence.

Matthew 23:1-13 NLT:

Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, “The teachers of religious law and the Pharisees are the official interpreters of the law of Moses. So practice and obey whatever they tell you, but don’t follow their example. For they don’t practice what they teach. They crush people with unbearable religious demands and never lift a finger to ease the burden.

“Everything they do is for show. On their arms they wear extra wide prayer boxes with Scripture verses inside, and they wear robes with extra long tassels. And they love to sit at the head table at banquets and in the seats of honor in the synagogues. They love to receive respectful greetings as they walk in the marketplaces, and to be called ‘Rabbi.’

“Don’t let anyone call you ‘Rabbi,’ for you have only one teacher, and all of you are equal as brothers and sisters. Reflection/Prayer:

Often in the past, Lord, I have come to Thee with heavy heart and burdened life. And Thou hast answered my prayers and graciously lifted the burden from me. Yet with a strange perversion, I still refuse to leave my burdens with Thee. Always I gather them up – those heavy bundles of fears and anxieties – and shoulder them again. (Peter Marshall)

Some of the strongest words You speak, Lord, are those condemning

people who put heavy loads on the backs of others,
people who delight in seeing others weighed down by their guilt and failure,
people whose eyelids judge even their friends.

Your house should be built of living stones, not sinking ones. Jesus, the prophecies about You said that the zeal for Your house consumed You. May that zeal consume us, too. Help us to destroy everything that gets in your way, but to do so with a pure heart.

Now, you people of Jerusalem and Judah, you judge between me and my vineyard. What more could I have done for my vineyard that I have not already done? When I expected sweet grapes, why did my vineyard give me bitter grapes?

Luke 13:34; 19:41 NLT:

“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones God’s messengers! How often I have wanted to gather your children together as a hen protects her chicks beneath her wings, but you wouldn’t let me….”

But as he came closer to Jerusalem and saw the city ahead, he began to weep.

Reflection/Prayer:

Centuries ago, Demonax the Cynic said this:

Probably all laws are useless;
for good men do not need laws at all
and bad men are made no better by them.

We can see he has a point – up to a point! But the writer of the psalms says, ‘Streams of tears flow from my eyes because Your law is not obeyed.’ For this to be our response we need to have compassion for those who do not take heed of God’s law. For this to be our response we need to be touched with the sorrow of God’s heart, and long to comfort Him. For this to be our response we need to believe that the law of God is good, and just, and given to care for and tend the people He loves.

Does it move us to tears that the law of God is abandoned, ignored, or even scorned? Does it move us to action when we realize that most people have little concept of what the laws of God are? Is our heart under Kingdom rule? or do we have divided loyalties, as if we were citizens of two kingdoms, obeying whichever rule of conduct happens to suit us at the time?

‘What more could I have done for you than I have done?’ says the Lord, ‘for I loved you!’

And Jesus wept.
