Israel Leaves Mount Sinai

10:11 On the twentieth day of the second month of the second year, the ⌞column of⌟ smoke left the tent of the words of God’s promise. So the Israelites moved from the Desert of Sinai and traveled from place to place until the ⌞column of⌟ smoke stopped in the Desert of Paran.

This was the first time they moved, following the command that the Lord had given through Moses. With their flag in front, the armies led by Judah’s descendants broke camp first. Nahshon, son of Amminadab, was in command. Nethanel, son of Zuar, commanded the army of Issachar. Eliab, son of Helon, commanded the army of Zebulun. Then the tent ⌞of meeting⌟ was taken down, and the Gershonites and Merarites, who carried it, broke camp.

With their flag in front, the armies led by Reuben’s descendants broke camp next. Elizur, son of Shedeur, was in command. Shelumiel, son of Zurishaddai, commanded the army of Simeon. Eliasaph, son of Deuel, commanded the army of Gad. Then the Kohathites, who carried the holy things, broke camp. By the time they arrived, the tent ⌞of meeting⌟ would already be set up.

With their flag in front, the armies led by Ephraim’s descendants broke camp next. Elisha, son of Ammihud, was in command. Gamaliel, son of Pedahzur, commanded the army of Manasseh. Abidan, son of Gideoni, commanded the army of Benjamin.

As a rear guard for the whole camp, the armies led by Dan’s descendants broke camp last with their flag in front. Ahiezer, son of Ammishaddai, was in command. Pagiel, son of Ochran, commanded the army of Asher. Ahira, son of Enan, commanded the army of Naphtali.

This was the order in which the Israelite armies broke camp when they went from place to place.

Moses said to his brother-in-law Hobab, son of Reuel the Midianite, “We are going to the place the Lord promised to give us. Come with us. We will be good to you, because the Lord has promised good things to Israel.”

Hobab answered, “No, I won’t go. I want to go back to my own country where my relatives are.”

But Moses said, “Please don’t leave us. You know where we can set up camp in the desert, and you could be our guide. If you come with us, we will share with you all the good things the Lord gives us.”

So they left the mountain of the Lord and traveled for three days. The ark of the Lord’s promise went ahead of them a distance of three days’ journey to find them a place to rest. The Lord’s ⌞column of⌟ smoke was over them by day when they moved the camp.

Whenever the ark started to move, Moses would say,

“Arise, O Lord!
Scatter your enemies!
Make those who hate you run away from you!”

And whenever it stopped, he would say,

“Return, O Lord, to the countless thousands of Israel!”

John Is Born

1:57 When the time came for Elizabeth to have her child, she gave birth to a son. Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had been very kind to her, and they shared her joy.

When the child was eight days old, they went ⌞to the temple⌟ to circumcise him. They were going to name him Zechariah after his father. But his mother spoke up, “Absolutely not! His name will be John.”

Their friends said to her, “But you don’t have any relatives with that name.”

So they motioned to the baby’s father to see what he wanted to name the child. Zechariah asked for a writing tablet and wrote, “His name is John.” Everyone was amazed.

Suddenly, Zechariah was able to speak, and he began to praise God.

All their neighbors were filled with awe. Throughout the mountain region of Judea, people talked about everything that had happened. Everyone who heard about it seriously thought it over and asked, “What does the future hold for this child?” It was clear that the Lord was with him.

His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied,

“Praise the Lord God of Israel!
He has come to take care of his people
and to set them free.
He has raised up a mighty Savior for us
in the family of his servant David.
He made this promise through his holy prophets long ago.
He promised to save us from our enemies
and from the power of all who hate us.
He has shown his mercy to our ancestors
and remembered his holy promise,
the oath that he swore to our ancestor Abraham.
He promised to rescue us from our enemies’ power
so that we could serve him without fear
by being holy and honorable as long as we live.

“You, child, will be called a prophet of the Most High.
You will go ahead of the Lord to prepare his way.
You will make his people know that they can be saved
through the forgiveness of their sins.
A new day will dawn on us from above
because our God is loving and merciful.
He will give light to those who live in the dark
and in death’s shadow.
He will guide us into the way of peace.”

The child John grew and became spiritually strong. He lived in the desert until the day he appeared to the people of Israel.

The Ark

37:1 Bezalel made the ark out of acacia wood 45 inches long, 27 inches wide, and 27 inches high. He covered it with pure gold inside and out and put a gold molding around it. He cast four gold rings for its four feet, two rings on each side. Then he made poles out of acacia wood and covered them with gold. He put them through the rings on the sides of the ark in order to carry it.

He made the throne of mercy out of pure gold 45 inches long and 27 inches wide. Then he made two angels out of hammered gold for the two ends of the throne of mercy, one on each end. He formed the angels and the throne of mercy out of one piece ⌞of gold⌟. The angels had their wings spread above the throne of mercy, overshadowing it. They faced each other, looking at the throne of mercy.

The Table

37:10 He made the table out of acacia wood 36 inches long, 18 inches wide, and 27 inches high. He covered it with pure gold and put a gold molding around it. He made a rim 3 inches wide around it and put a gold molding around the rim. He cast four gold rings for it and fastened the rings to the four corners, where the four legs were. The rings were put close to the rim to hold the poles for carrying the table. These poles were made out of acacia wood and were covered with gold. For the table he made plates, dishes, bowls, and pitchers to be used for pouring wine offerings. All of them were made out of pure gold.

Advice for All Christians

4:2 Keep praying. Pay attention when you offer prayers of thanksgiving. At the same time also pray for us. Pray that God will give us an opportunity to speak the word so that we may tell the mystery about Christ. It is because of this mystery that I am a prisoner. Pray that I may make this mystery as clear as possible. This is what I have to do.

Be wise in the way you act toward those who are outside ⌞the Christian faith⌟. Make the most of your opportunities.

Everything you say should be kind and well thought out so that you know how to answer everyone.

Greetings from Paul and His Coworkers

4:7 I’m sending Tychicus to you. He is our dear brother, trustworthy deacon, and partner in the Lord’s work. He will tell you everything that is happening to me. I’m sending him to you so that you may know how we are doing and so that he may encourage you. I’m sending Onesimus with him. Onesimus is from your city and is our faithful and dear brother. They will tell you about everything that’s happening here.

Aristarchus, who is a prisoner like me, sends greetings. So does Mark, the cousin of Barnabas. You have received instructions about Mark. If he comes to you, welcome him. Jesus, called Justus, also greets you. They are the only converts from the Jewish religion who are working with me for God’s kingdom. They have provided me with comfort. Epaphras, a servant of Christ Jesus from your city, greets you. He always prays intensely for you. He prays that you will continue to be mature and completely convinced of everything that God wants. I assure you that he works hard for you and the people in Laodicea and Hierapolis. My dear friend Luke, the physician, and Demas greet you. Greet our brothers and sisters in Laodicea, especially Nympha and the church that meets in her house.

After you have read this letter, read it in the church at Laodicea. Make sure that you also read the letter from Laodicea.

Tell Archippus to complete all the work that he started as the Lord’s servant.

I, Paul, am writing this greeting with my own hand. Remember that I’m a prisoner. God’s good will be with you.

David Defeats the Philistines

5:17 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king of Israel, all of them came to attack David. But David heard about it and went to the fortress. The Philistines had come and overrun the valley of Rephaim.

David asked the Lord, “Should I attack the Philistines? Will you hand them over to me?”

The Lord answered David, “Attack! I will certainly hand the Philistines over to you.”

So David went to Baal Perazim and defeated the Philistines there. He said, “The Lord has overwhelmed my enemies in front of me like an overwhelming flood.” That is why that place is called Baal Perazim [The Lord Overwhelms]. The Philistines left their idols there, so David and his men carried the idols away.

The Philistines again attacked and overran the valley of Rephaim. David asked the Lord, and he answered, “Don’t attack now, but circle around behind them, and come at them in front of the balsam trees. When you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, act immediately because the Lord has gone ahead of you to defeat the Philistine army.” David did as the Lord ordered him and defeated the Philistines from Geba to Gezer.

Jesus Goes to the Festival of Booths

7:1 Jesus later traveled throughout Galilee. He didn’t want to travel in Judea because Jews there wanted to kill him.

The time for the Jewish Festival of Booths was near. So Jesus’ brothers told him, “Leave this place, and go to Judea so that your disciples can see the things that you’re doing. No one does things secretly when he wants to be known publicly. If you do these things, you should let the world see you.” Even his brothers didn’t believe in him.

Jesus told them, “Now is not the right time for me to go. Any time is right for you. The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I say that what everyone does is evil. Go to the festival. I’m not going to this festival right now. Now is not the right time for me to go.”

After saying this, Jesus stayed in Galilee.

Behold, I am sending you out
As sheep in the midst of wolves

So be wise as serpents
innocent as doves
Rely on your Shepherd
abide in His love
Oh be wise as serpents
innocent as doves
Rely on your Shepherd
abide in His love

Do not be anxious
About what to say
Your Father’s Spirit
Is making a way
Just give Him your mouth
There in that hour
Your words of truth
are not from you
But through His power

So be wise as serpents
innocent as doves
Rely on your Shepherd
abide in His love
Oh be wise as serpents
innocent as doves
Rely on your Shepherd
abide in His love

Go find my lost sheep
I know them by name
Look for the hurting
The blind and the lame
Heal their diseases
Bind up their wounds
Teach them to sing
for the Shepherd-King
Is coming soon

So be wise as serpents
innocent as doves
Rely on your Shepherd
abide in His love

Find the lost, heal the sick
Preach forgiveness
Do not fear, raise the dead,
Banish demons
Freely you have received
Freely give to all in need
For the kingdom of heaven is near
Yes the kingdom of heaven is here

Behold, I am sending you out
As sheep in the midst of wolves
Behold, I am sending you out

David married more concubines and wives from Jerusalem after he had come there from Hebron, and he fathered more sons and daughters. These are the names of the children born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, Ibhar, Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia, Elishama, Eliada, and Eliphelet.

Be Patient

5:7 Brothers and sisters, be patient until the Lord comes again. See how farmers wait for their precious crops to grow. They wait patiently for fall and spring rains. You, too, must be patient. Don’t give up hope. The Lord will soon be here. Brothers and sisters, stop complaining about each other, or you will be condemned. Realize that the judge is standing at the door.

Brothers and sisters, follow the example of the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. They were patient when they suffered unjustly. We consider those who endure to be blessed. You have heard about Job’s endurance. You saw that the Lord ended Job’s suffering because the Lord is compassionate and merciful.

Don’t Take Oaths

5:12 Above all things, my brothers and sisters, do not take an oath on anything in heaven or on earth. Do not take any oath. If you mean yes, say yes. If you mean no, say no. Do this so that you won’t be condemned.

    • Strengthen the Messianic communities – Jew and Arab alike – bind them together in love, that they may be a source of help, and healing, and hope;
    • Use them in the restoration of your people to their proper place in your Kingdom.
    • We pray in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

+ O God, without whose beauty and goodness our souls are unfed, without whose truth our reason withers: Consecrate our  lives to your will, giving us such purity of heart, such depth of faith, and such steadfastness of purpose, that in time we may  come to think your own thoughts after you; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.

and keep us in eternal life.
