David Makes a Promise to Jonathan

20:1 David fled from the pastures at Ramah, came to Jonathan, and asked, “What have I done? What crime am I guilty of? What sin have I committed against your father that he’s trying to kill me?”

Jonathan answered, “That’s unthinkable! You’re not going to die! My father does nothing without telling me, whether it’s important or not. Why should my father hide this from me? It’s just not that way.”

But David took an oath, saying, “Your father certainly knows that you support me, so he said ⌞to himself⌟, ‘Jonathan must not know about this. It will bring him distress.’ But I solemnly swear, as the Lord and you live, I’m only one step away from death.”

Jonathan said to David, “I’ll do whatever you say.”

David replied, “Tomorrow is the New Moon Festival, when I should sit and eat at the king’s ⌞table⌟. But let me go and hide in the countryside for two more nights. If your father really misses me, tell him, ‘David repeatedly begged me to let him run to Bethlehem, his hometown, because his relatives are offering the annual sacrifice there.’ If he says, ‘Good!’ then I will be safe. But if he gets really angry, then you’ll know for sure that he has decided to harm me. Now, be kind to me. After all, you forced me into an agreement with the Lord. If I have committed any crime, kill me yourself. Why bother taking me to your father?”

Jonathan answered, “That’s unthinkable! If I knew for sure that my father had decided to harm you, I would have told you about it.”

Then David asked, “Who will tell me whether or not your father gives you a harsh answer?”

Jonathan said, “Let’s go out into the country.” So they went out into the country.

“As the Lord God of Israel ⌞is my witness⌟,” Jonathan continued, “I’ll find out in the next two or three days how my father feels about you. If he does feel kindly toward you, then I will send someone to tell you. If my father plans to harm you and I fail to tell you and send you away safely, may the Lord harm me even more. May the Lord be with you as he used to be with my father. But as long as I live, ⌞promise me that you will⌟ show me kindness because of the Lord. And even when I die, never stop being kind to my family. The Lord will wipe each of David’s enemies off the face of the earth. At that time, if Jonathan’s name  is cut off from David’s family, then may the Lord punish David’s house.”

Once again Jonathan swore an oath to David because of his love for David. He loved David as much as ⌞he loved⌟ himself. “Tomorrow is the New Moon Festival,” Jonathan told him, “and you will be missed when your seat is empty. The day after tomorrow you will be missed even more. So go to the place where you hid on that other occasion, and stay by the rock. I will shoot three arrows from beside it toward a target. Then I will send out a boy and say, ‘Go, find the arrows.’ Now, if I tell the boy, ‘Look, the arrows are next to you; get them,’ then come ⌞back with me⌟. You will be safe, and there will be no trouble. I swear it, as the Lord lives. But if I tell the boy, ‘The arrows are next to you,’ then go, because the Lord has sent you away. We have made a promise to each other, and the Lord is ⌞a witness⌟ between you and me forever.”

So David hid in the countryside. When the New Moon Festival came, King Saul sat down to eat the festival meal. He sat in his usual seat by the wall, while Jonathan stood. Abner sat beside Saul, but David’s place was empty.

The Collection for Christians in Jerusalem

8:1 Brothers and sisters, we want you to know how God showed his kindness  to the churches in the province of Macedonia. While they were being severely tested by suffering, their overflowing joy, along with their extreme poverty, has made them even more generous. I assure you that by their own free will they have given all they could, even more than they could afford. They made an appeal to us, begging us to let them participate in the ministry of God’s kindness to his holy people ⌞in Jerusalem⌟. They did more than we had expected. First, they gave themselves to the Lord and to us, since this was God’s will. This led us to urge Titus to finish his work of God’s kindness among you in the same way as he had already started it.

Indeed, the more your faith, your ability to speak, your knowledge, your dedication, and your love for us increase, the more we want you to participate in this work of God’s kindness.

Prayer: ACNA | BCP2019

+ Dear Lord and Savior Jesus Christ: We hold up all our weaknesses to your strength, our failures to your faithfulness, our sinfulness to your perfection, our loneliness to your compassion, our little pains to your great agony on the Cross. We pray that you will cleanse us, strengthen us, guide us, so that in all ways our lives may be lived as you would have them lived, without cowardice and for you alone. Show us how to live in true humility, true contrition, and true love. Amen.

+ Sovereign Lord: We pray for the peace of Jerusalem:

    • Protect Israel from the fiery darts of the evil one coming from every direction, both within and without.
    • Grant your heavenly wisdom to those guiding Israel militarily, politically, and diplomatically;
    • Give them hearts to receive, and the courage to do, what’s right in your sight.
    • Comfort those who grieve and mourn the loss of loved ones;
    • Rebuke those who would use grief for evil purposes.
    • Bring swift and certain justice to all those complicit in the Oct 7th atrocities;
    • Deliver the hostages from captivity, and restore their souls.
    • Destroy every stronghold of the evil death cult terrorizing the Middle East.
    • Strengthen the Messianic communities – Jew and Arab alike – bind them together in love, that they may be a source of help, and healing, and hope;
    • Use them in the restoration of your people to their proper place in your Kingdom.
    • We pray in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

+ Heavenly Father, you have promised to hear what we ask in the Name of your Son: Accept and fulfill our petitions,  we pray, not as we ask in our ignorance, nor as we deserve in our sinfulness, but as you know and love us in your Son  Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

19:18 David escaped and went to Samuel at Ramah. He told Samuel everything Saul had done to him. Then he and Samuel went to the pastures and lived there.

When it was reported to Saul that David was in the pastures at Ramah, Saul sent messengers to get David. But when they saw a group of prophets prophesying with Samuel serving as their leader, God’s Spirit came over Saul’s messengers so that they also prophesied. When they told Saul ⌞about this⌟, he sent other messengers, but they also prophesied. Saul even sent a third group of messengers, but they also prophesied. Then he went to Ramah himself. He went as far as the big cistern in Secu and asked ⌞the people⌟, “Where are Samuel and David?”

He was told, “Over there in the pastures at Ramah.” As he went toward the pastures at Ramah, God’s Spirit came over him too. He continued his journey, prophesying until he came to the pastures at Ramah. He even took off his clothes as he prophesied in front of Samuel and lay there naked all day and all night. This is where the saying, “Is Saul one of the prophets?” came from.

Paul Was Comforted by What the Corinthians Did

7:2 Open your hearts to us. We haven’t treated anyone unjustly, ruined anyone, or cheated anyone. I’m not saying this to condemn you. I’ve already told you that you are in our hearts so that we will live and die together. I have great confidence in you, and I have a lot of reasons to be proud of you. Even as we suffer, I’m encouraged and feel very happy.

Ever since we arrived in the province of Macedonia, we’ve had no rest. Instead, we suffer in a number of ways. Outwardly we have conflicts, and inwardly we have fears. Yet God, who comforts those who are dejected, comforted us when Titus arrived. We were comforted not only by his arrival but also by learning about the comfort he had received while he was with you. He told us how you wanted to see me, how sorry you are for what you’ve done, and how concerned you are about me. This made me even happier.

If my letter made you uncomfortable, I’m not sorry. But since my letter did make you uncomfortable for a while, I was sorry. But I’m happy now, not because I made you uncomfortable, but because the distress I caused you has led you to change the way you think and act. You were distressed in a godly way, so we haven’t done you any harm. In fact, to be distressed in a godly way causes people to change the way they think and act and leads them to be saved. No one can regret that. But the distress that the world causes brings only death.

When you became distressed in a godly way, look at how much devotion it caused you to have. You were ready to clear yourselves of the charges against you. You were disgusted with the wrong that had been done. You were afraid. You wanted to see us. You wanted to show your concern for us. You were ready to punish the wrong that had been done. In every way you have demonstrated that you are people who are innocent in this matter. So, when I wrote to you, I didn’t write because of the man who did the wrong or the man who was hurt by it. Rather, I wrote because I wanted you to show your devotion to us in God’s sight. This is what has comforted us.

In addition to being comforted, we were especially pleased to see how happy Titus was. All of you had put his mind at ease. I didn’t have to be ashamed of anything I had said to him when I bragged about you. Since everything we told you was true, our bragging to Titus has also proved to be true. His deepest feelings go out to you even more as he remembers how obedient all of you were, and how you welcomed him with fear and trembling. I’m pleased that I can be confident about you in every way.

Saul Tries to Kill David

19:8 When war broke out again, David went to fight the Philistines. He defeated them so decisively that they fled from him. Then an evil spirit from the Lord came over Saul while he was sitting in his house with his spear in his hand. David was strumming a tune. Saul tried to nail David to the wall with his spear. But David dodged it, and Saul’s spear struck the wall. David fled, escaping ⌞from Saul⌟ that night.

Saul sent messengers to watch David’s house and kill him in the morning. But Michal, David’s wife, advised him, “If you don’t save yourself tonight, you’ll be dead tomorrow!” So Michal lowered David through a window, and he ran away to escape. Then Michal took some idols, laid them in the bed, put a goat-hair blanket at its head, and covered the idols with a garment.

When Saul sent messengers to get David, Michal said, “He’s sick.” Then Saul sent the messengers back to see David themselves. Saul told them, “Bring him here to me in his bed so that I can kill him.” The messengers came, and there in the bed were the idols with the goat-hair blanket at its head.

Saul asked Michal, “Why did you betray me by sending my enemy away so that he could escape?”

Michal answered, “He told me, ‘Let me go! Why should I kill you?’ ”

Caroline Cobb: Who Is This Jesus? (Live Acoustic) [feat. Paul Demer & Graham Jones]

I saw his face shine like the sun, On the mountainside
Elijah and Moses were there, Pale in his glorious light
And a voice came like thunder
And I trembled all over
Said “This, my beloved child.”
Who is this Jesus, but the Son of God?

Verse 2
I saw him walk on the waves, I saw him still the storm
I saw the demons afraid, But the children safe in his arms
He said Lazarus rise up
Wake from your sleep
And his dead heart started to beat!
Who is this Jesus, but the Son of God?

Verse 3
I leaned my head, back on his chest, For he was my friend
He poured the wine, he broke the bread, It was near the end
I saw them take him
Beat him, try to break him
And hang him on the cross

They laughed, they mocked him
He said “God, forgive them
It’s finished, now it is done!”

The sky black as ink
The earth shook with grief
As he breathed his last and was gone
Who is this Jesus? Who is this Jesus?
Who is this Jesus, but the Son of God?
Who is this Jesus, but the Son of God?

Verse 4
I saw the stone rolled away
I saw his empty tomb
I saw the scars in his hands
There in the upper room

Jesus Walks on the Sea

6:45 Jesus quickly made his disciples get into a boat and cross to Bethsaida ahead of him while he sent the people away. After saying goodbye to them, he went up a mountain to pray. When evening came, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and he was alone on the land.

Jesus saw that they were in a lot of trouble as they rowed, because they were going against the wind. Between three and six o’clock in the morning, he came to them. He was walking on the sea. He wanted to pass by them. When they saw him walking on the sea, they thought, “It’s a ghost!” and they began to scream. All of them saw him and were terrified.

Immediately, he said, “Calm down! It’s me. Don’t be afraid!” He got into the boat with them, and the wind stopped blowing. The disciples were astounded. (They didn’t understand what had happened with the loaves of bread. Instead, their minds were closed.)

Saul’s Plan to Kill David

19:1 Saul told his son Jonathan and all his officers to kill David. But Saul’s son Jonathan was very fond of David, so he reported to David, “My father Saul is trying to kill you. Please be careful tomorrow morning. Go into hiding, and stay out of sight. I’ll go out and stand beside my father in the field where you’ll be. I’ll speak with my father about you. If I find out anything, I’ll tell you.”

So Jonathan spoke well of David to his father Saul. “You should not commit a sin against your servant David,” he said. “He hasn’t sinned against you. Instead, he has done some very fine things for you: He risked his life and killed the Philistine Goliath, and the Lord gave all Israel a great victory. When you saw it, you rejoiced. Why then should you sin by shedding David’s innocent blood for no reason?”

Saul listened to Jonathan, and he promised, “I solemnly swear, as the Lord lives, he will not be killed.” Jonathan told David all of this. Then Jonathan took David to Saul. So David was returned to his former status in Saul’s court.

They struck a sandbar in the water and ran the ship aground. The front of the ship stuck and couldn’t be moved, while the back of the ship was broken to pieces by the force of the waves.

The soldiers had a plan to kill the prisoners to keep them from swimming away and escaping. However, the officer wanted to save Paul, so he stopped the soldiers from carrying out their plan. David’s Success Makes Saul Jealous

18:6 As they arrived, David was returning from a campaign against the Philistines. Women from all of Israel’s cities came to meet King Saul. They sang and danced, accompanied by tambourines, joyful music, and triangles. The women who were celebrating sang,

“Saul has defeated thousands
but David tens of thousands!”

Saul became very angry because he considered this saying to be insulting. “To David they credit tens of thousands,” he said, “but to me they credit ⌞only⌟ a few thousand. The only thing left for David is my kingdom.” From that day on Saul kept an eye on David.

The next day an evil spirit from God seized Saul. He began to prophesy in his house while David strummed a tune on the lyre as he did every day. Now, Saul had a spear in his hand. He raised the spear and thought, “I’ll nail David to the wall.” But David got away from him twice.

Saul was afraid of David, because the Lord was with David but had left Saul. So he kept David away. He made David captain of a regiment. David led the troops out ⌞to battle⌟ and back again. He was successful in everything he undertook because the Lord was with him. Saul noticed how very successful he was and became ⌞even more⌟ afraid of him. Everyone in Israel and Judah loved David, because he led them in and out ⌞of battle⌟.

Finally, Saul said to David, “Here is my oldest daughter Merab. I will give her to you as your wife if you prove yourself to be a warrior for me and fight the Lord’s battles.” (Saul thought, “I must not lay a hand on him. Let the Philistines do that.”)

“Who am I?” David asked Saul. “And how important are my relatives or my father’s family in Israel that I should be the king’s son-in-law?”

But when the time came to give Saul’s daughter Merab to David, she was married to Adriel from Meholah. However, Saul’s daughter Michal fell in love with David. When Saul was told about it, the news pleased him. Saul thought, “I’ll give her to David. She will trap him, and the Philistines will get him.” So he said to David a second time, “You will now be my son-in-law.”

Saul ordered his officers, “Talk to David in private. Tell him, ‘The king likes you, and all his officers are fond of you. Become the king’s son-in-law.’ ”

When Saul’s officers made it a point to say this, David asked, “Do you think it’s easy to become the king’s son-in-law? I am a poor and unimportant person.”

When the officers told Saul what David had said, Saul replied, “Tell David, ‘The king doesn’t want any payment for the bride except 100 Philistine foreskins so that he can get revenge on his enemies.’ ” In this way Saul planned to have David fall into the hands of the Philistines. When his officers told David this, David concluded that it was acceptable to become the king’s son-in-law. Before the time was up, David and his men went out and struck down 200 Philistines. David brought the foreskins, and they counted them out for the king so that David could become the king’s son-in-law. Then Saul gave him his daughter Michal as his wife. Saul realized that the Lord was with David and that his daughter Michal loved David. Then Saul was even more afraid of David, and so Saul became David’s constant enemy.

The Philistine generals still went out ⌞to fight Israel⌟. But whenever they went out ⌞to fight⌟, David was more successful than the rest of Saul’s officers. So David gained a good reputation.

NT Reading: Acts 27:13-38 (GW)

27:13 When a gentle breeze began to blow from the south, the men thought their plan would work. They raised the anchor and sailed close to the shore of Crete.

Soon a powerful wind (called a northeaster) blew from the island. The wind carried the ship away, and we couldn’t sail against the wind. We couldn’t do anything, so we were carried along by the wind. As we drifted to the sheltered side of a small island called Cauda, we barely got control of the ship’s lifeboat. The men pulled it up on deck. Then they passed ropes under the ship to reinforce it. Fearing that they would hit the large sandbank off the shores of Libya, they lowered the sail and were carried along by the wind. We continued to be tossed so violently by the storm that the next day the men began to throw the cargo overboard. On the third day they threw the ship’s equipment overboard. For a number of days we couldn’t see the sun or the stars. The storm wouldn’t let up. It was so severe that we finally began to lose any hope of coming out of it alive.

Since hardly anyone wanted to eat, Paul stood among them and said, “Men, you should have followed my advice not to sail from Crete. You would have avoided this disaster and loss. Now I advise you to have courage. No one will lose his life. Only the ship will be destroyed. I know this because an angel from the God to whom I belong and whom I serve stood by me last night. The angel told me, ‘Don’t be afraid, Paul! You must present your case to the emperor. God has granted safety to everyone who is sailing with you.’ So have courage, men! I trust God that everything will turn out as he told me. However, we will run aground on some island.”

The Shipwreck

27:27 On the fourteenth night we were still drifting through the Mediterranean Sea. About midnight the sailors suspected that we were approaching land. So they threw a line with a weight on it into the water. It sank 120 feet. They waited a little while and did the same thing again. This time the line sank 90 feet. Fearing we might hit rocks, they dropped four anchors from the back of the ship and prayed for morning to come.

The sailors tried to escape from the ship. They let the lifeboat down into the sea and pretended they were going to lay out the anchors from the front of the ship. Paul told the officer and the soldiers, “If these sailors don’t stay on the ship, you have no hope of staying alive.” Then the soldiers cut the ropes that held the lifeboat and let it drift away.

Just before daybreak Paul was encouraging everyone to have something to eat. “This is the fourteenth day you have waited and have had nothing to eat. So I’m encouraging you to eat something. Eating will help you survive, since not a hair from anyone’s head will be lost.” After Paul said this, he took some bread, thanked God in front of everyone, broke it, and began to eat. Everyone was encouraged and had something to eat. (There were 276 of us on the ship.) After the people had eaten all they wanted, they lightened the ship by dumping the wheat into the sea.

Prayer: ACNA | BCP2019

+ Most loving Father, you will us to give thanks for all things, to dread nothing but the loss of you, and to cast all our  care on the One who cares for us. Preserve us from faithless fears and worldly anxieties, and grant that no clouds of  this mortal life may hide from us the light of that love which is immortal, and which you have manifested unto us in  your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

+ Almighty God, we commend to your gracious care and keeping all the men and women of the Israeli Defense Forces. Defend them day by day with your heavenly grace; strengthen them in their trials and temptations; give them courage to  face the perils which beset them; and grant them a sense of your abiding presence wherever they may be; through Jesus  Christ our Lord. Amen.

+ Sovereign Lord: We pray for the peace of Jerusalem:

    • Protect Israel from the fiery darts of the evil one coming from every direction, both within and without.
    • Grant your heavenly wisdom to those guiding Israel militarily, politically, and diplomatically;
    • Give them hearts to receive, and the courage to do, what’s right in your sight.
    • Comfort those who grieve and mourn the loss of loved ones;
    • Rebuke those who would use grief for evil purposes.
    • Bring swift and certain justice to all those complicit in the Oct 7th atrocities;
    • Deliver the hostages from captivity, and restore their souls.
    • Destroy every stronghold of the evil death cult terrorizing the Middle East.
    • Strengthen the Messianic communities – Jew and Arab alike – bind them together in love, that they may be a source of help, and healing, and hope;
    • Use them in the restoration of your people to their proper place in your Kingdom.
    • We pray in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

+ O God of peace, who hast taught us that in returning and rest we shall be saved, in quietness and in confidence shall  be our strength: By the might of thy Spirit lift us, we pray thee, to thy presence, where we may be still and know that  thou art God; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
