David Defeats the Philistines

5:17 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king of Israel, all of them came to attack David. But David heard about it and went to the fortress. The Philistines had come and overrun the valley of Rephaim.

David asked the Lord, “Should I attack the Philistines? Will you hand them over to me?”

The Lord answered David, “Attack! I will certainly hand the Philistines over to you.”

So David went to Baal Perazim and defeated the Philistines there. He said, “The Lord has overwhelmed my enemies in front of me like an overwhelming flood.” That is why that place is called Baal Perazim [The Lord Overwhelms]. The Philistines left their idols there, so David and his men carried the idols away.

The Philistines again attacked and overran the valley of Rephaim. David asked the Lord, and he answered, “Don’t attack now, but circle around behind them, and come at them in front of the balsam trees. When you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, act immediately because the Lord has gone ahead of you to defeat the Philistine army.” David did as the Lord ordered him and defeated the Philistines from Geba to Gezer.

Jesus Goes to the Festival of Booths

7:1 Jesus later traveled throughout Galilee. He didn’t want to travel in Judea because Jews there wanted to kill him.

The time for the Jewish Festival of Booths was near. So Jesus’ brothers told him, “Leave this place, and go to Judea so that your disciples can see the things that you’re doing. No one does things secretly when he wants to be known publicly. If you do these things, you should let the world see you.” Even his brothers didn’t believe in him.

Jesus told them, “Now is not the right time for me to go. Any time is right for you. The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I say that what everyone does is evil. Go to the festival. I’m not going to this festival right now. Now is not the right time for me to go.”

After saying this, Jesus stayed in Galilee.

Wise & Innocent / Carolyn Broughton

Behold, I am sending you out
As sheep in the midst of wolves

So be wise as serpents
innocent as doves
Rely on your Shepherd
abide in His love
Oh be wise as serpents
innocent as doves
Rely on your Shepherd
abide in His love

Do not be anxious
About what to say
Your Father’s Spirit
Is making a way
Just give Him your mouth
There in that hour
Your words of truth
are not from you
But through His power

So be wise as serpents
innocent as doves
Rely on your Shepherd
abide in His love
Oh be wise as serpents
innocent as doves
Rely on your Shepherd
abide in His love

Go find my lost sheep
I know them by name
Look for the hurting
The blind and the lame
Heal their diseases
Bind up their wounds
Teach them to sing
for the Shepherd-King
Is coming soon

So be wise as serpents
innocent as doves
Rely on your Shepherd
abide in His love

Find the lost, heal the sick
Preach forgiveness
Do not fear, raise the dead,
Banish demons
Freely you have received
Freely give to all in need
For the kingdom of heaven is near
Yes the kingdom of heaven is here

Behold, I am sending you out
As sheep in the midst of wolves
Behold, I am sending you out
As sheep in the midst of wolves

So be wise as serpents
innocent as doves
Rely on your Shepherd
abide in His love
Oh be wise as serpents
innocent as doves
Rely on your Shepherd
abide in His love

David’s Palace, Wives, and Children in Jerusalem

5:11 Then King Hiram of Tyre sent messengers to David, along with cedarwood, carpenters, and stonemasons. They built a palace for David. So David realized that the Lord had established him as king of Israel and made his kingship famous for the sake of Israel, the Lord’s people.

David married more concubines and wives from Jerusalem after he had come there from Hebron, and he fathered more sons and daughters. These are the names of the children born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, Ibhar, Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia, Elishama, Eliada, and Eliphelet.

Be Patient

5:7 Brothers and sisters, be patient until the Lord comes again. See how farmers wait for their precious crops to grow. They wait patiently for fall and spring rains. You, too, must be patient. Don’t give up hope. The Lord will soon be here. Brothers and sisters, stop complaining about each other, or you will be condemned. Realize that the judge is standing at the door.

Brothers and sisters, follow the example of the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. They were patient when they suffered unjustly. We consider those who endure to be blessed. You have heard about Job’s endurance. You saw that the Lord ended Job’s suffering because the Lord is compassionate and merciful.

Don’t Take Oaths

5:12 Above all things, my brothers and sisters, do not take an oath on anything in heaven or on earth. Do not take any oath. If you mean yes, say yes. If you mean no, say no. Do this so that you won’t be condemned.

David Anointed King of Israel

5:1 All the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron. “We are your own flesh and blood,” they said. “Even in the past when Saul ruled us, you were the one who led Israel in battle. The Lord has said to you, ‘You will be shepherd of my people Israel, the leader of Israel.’ ”

All the leaders of Israel had come to Hebron. King David made an agreement with them at Hebron in front of the Lord. So they anointed David king of Israel. David was 30 years old when he became king, and he ruled for 40 years. In Hebron he ruled Judah for seven years and six months. In Jerusalem he ruled for 33 years over all Israel and Judah.

David Captures Jerusalem

5:6 The king and his men went to Jerusalem to attack the Jebusites, who lived in that region. The Jebusites told David, “You will never get in here. Even the blind and the lame could turn you away” (meaning that David could never get in there). But David captured the fortress Zion (that is, the City of David). That day David said, “Whoever wants to defeat the Jebusites must reach the lame and the blind who hate me by using the water shaft.” So there is a saying, “The blind and the lame will not get into the palace.” David lived in the fortress and called it the City of David. He built the city ⌞of Jerusalem⌟ around it from the Millo to the palace. David continued to grow more powerful because the Lord God  of Armies was with him.

More Reasons for Paul to Brag

11:16 Again I say that no one should think that I’m a fool. But if you do, then take me for a fool so that I can also brag a little. What I say as I start bragging is foolishness. It’s not something I would say if I were speaking for the Lord. Since it’s common for people to brag, I’ll do it too. You’re wise, so you’ll gladly put up with fools. When someone makes you slaves, consumes your wealth, seizes your property, orders you around, or slaps your faces, you put up with it. I’m ashamed to admit it, but Timothy and I don’t have the strength to do those things to you.

Whatever other people dare to brag about, I, like a fool, can also brag about. Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they Abraham’s descendants? So am I. Are they Christ’s servants? It’s insane to say it, but I’m a far better one. I’ve done much more work, been in prison many more times, been beaten more severely, and have faced death more often. Five times the Jewish leaders had me beaten with 39 lashes; three times Roman officials had me beaten with clubs. Once people tried to stone me to death; three times I was shipwrecked, and I drifted on the sea for a night and a day. Because I’ve traveled a lot, I’ve faced dangers from raging rivers, from robbers, from my own people, and from other people. I’ve faced dangers in the city, in the open country, on the sea, and from believers who turned out to be false friends. Because I’ve had to work so hard, I’ve often gone without sleep, been hungry and thirsty, and gone without food and without proper clothes during cold weather. Besides these external matters, I have the daily pressure of my anxiety about all the churches. When anyone is weak, I’m weak too. When anyone is caught in a trap, I’m also harmed.

If I must brag, I will brag about the things that show how weak I am. The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, who is praised forever, knows that I’m not lying. The governor under King Aretas put guards around the city of Damascus to catch me. So I was let down in a basket through an opening in the wall and escaped from him.

3:31 David told Joab and all the people with him, “Tear your clothes, put on sackcloth, and mourn for Abner.” King David followed the open casket. They buried Abner in Hebron. The king cried loudly at Abner’s grave, and all the people cried. The king sang a funeral song for Abner:

Should Abner die like a godless fool?
Your hands were not tied.
Your feet were not chained.
You fell as one falls in front of wicked men.

And all the people continued to cry for him.

That entire day all the people tried to get David to eat some food. But David had taken an oath: “May God strike me dead if I taste any food or anything else before the sun goes down.” Then all the people understood and approved of this, as all the people approved of everything the king did. That day all the people of Israel knew the king wasn’t responsible for killing Ner’s son Abner. The king said to his officers, “Don’t you know that today a leader, a great man, has fallen in Israel?

3:1 As the war between the royal families of Saul and David dragged on, David’s family became stronger and stronger, and Saul’s family became weaker and weaker.

David’s Sons

3:2 Sons were born to David while he was in Hebron. His first son was Amnon, ⌞born⌟ to Ahinoam from Jezreel. The second was Chileab, ⌞born⌟ to Abigail (who had been Nabal’s wife) from Carmel. The third was Absalom, whose mother was Maacah (the daughter of King Talmai) from Geshur. The fourth was Adonijah, whose mother was Haggith. The fifth was Shephatiah, whose mother was Abital. The sixth was Ithream, ⌞born⌟ to David’s wife Eglah. These sons were born to David while he was in Hebron.

Abner’s Death

3:6 During the war between the families of Saul and David, Abner strengthened his position in Saul’s royal family. Saul had a concubine  named Rizpah (Aiah’s daughter). Ishbosheth asked Abner, “Why did you have sex with my father’s concubine?”

Ishbosheth’s question made Abner very angry. “Have I been behaving like some Judean dog?” he asked. “Until now I’ve been faithful to your father Saul’s family, to his relatives and friends, and I haven’t handed you over to David. But now you charge me with a crime because of this woman. May God strike me dead unless I do for David what the Lord had promised him with an oath: ‘I, the Lord, will transfer the kingship from Saul’s family and establish David’s throne over Israel and Judah from Dan to Beersheba.’ ” Ishbosheth couldn’t respond to a single word, because he was afraid of Abner.

Then Abner sent messengers to David to speak on his behalf. “Who owns this country?” he asked. “Make an agreement with me,” he said. “I’ll support you and bring all Israel to you.”
